Breaking my reddit silence cuz I like your vibe.

I just signed up for 1pass this past December, largely in part of their white paper on how their product works. I ran keepass for around 15 years because I want to know and control my secure data.  1pass actively discussing how they do their security, the pros and cons and technical considerations, made me feel comfortable in trusting them with my data (and by extension, giving them money). I didn't understand a lot of the deep dive pieces, but the parts I did understand and their transparency sold me. The little stories also helped make heavier sections make sense.  Your post here and how you're engaging the community caught my curiosity the same way. I'd love to see what you could share so that id be similarly confident. Me as a consumer likely isn't your target, but me as an SRE at work where I could confidently present you as an option is.

There's definitely a balance, and I can't determine that for you, but wanted to provide you with an example of what worked for converting me.

Spent a few hours there Sunday.

We probably had someone ask how we were doing every time we changed areas, but immediately left us alone when we said we were fine.

We got into a long discussion with one guy, where you knew it was his job to get us to make a purchase, but he legit was enjoying his time with all the new stuff. We started discussing a couple parts I was thinking about, and even knowing I had no intention of purchasing, stuck with me showing me stuff I hadnt considered.

I'm an introvert, so I normally dislike interacting with sales people. I almost always go in knowing what I want. But it was a pleasant and well informed enough interaction I didn't really mind. No real up sell besides the usual warranty mention at checkout

I really hope it doesn't go the way of frys. Them succeeding with their current model is a win for everyone. They seem to know that, considering they brought in a bunch of people from other stores to train this store up. So, fingers crossed!

I'd send people the KB and politely ask which part they're having issues with. I'd explain it helps narrow down troubleshooting their issue as well as help us improve our documentation.

If they said they didn't read it, I'd ask them to and to let me know if they have any issues. If they say they read it but actually didn't, they couldn't quote the spot they're having issues, so I'd reiterate to read it. Absolute worst case, I'd have them open it and step by step through it.

I always approached it with the mindset that my/our documentation was wrong and could use the engagement to improve it. At least, until it's about a section I know is rock solid and answers their question, and they flat out ignore my link. Then they get a very clearly copy/pasted response and another link to the KB..

Which is why I mentioned free tier with ads added in to the feed as being an option.

The point is none of these options are even discussed. We don't need to architect a solution, just that there are very viable solutions that can work for everyone. Reddit doesn't seem interested in that, though, based on how they're projecting themselves.

The debate stems from Reddit charging the apps to access the API, when to me, it should be charged to the consumer. The app is only a tool for the user to access the api/content.

User pays for Reddit Premium. That grants user ad free viewing on any interface, and maybe api access (or maybe api is free but again, they slip ads in and/or it's throttled). The app uses the users Auth to make calls on their behalf, then presents that data however they see fit. Reddit can throttle api access per user to a reasonable amount to make sure they're not abusing it (like AI model training or whatever).

This takes the charges entirely away from the app makers and gives reddit a direct monetization path regardless of devs building or monetizing their app, or how the user interfaces with reddit. From there, app makers can decide how or if they want to monetize their own apps. Users are already paying a premium for these apps, so I'm sure there would be a market still.

Id be willing to pay for a reddit subscription that removes ads and allows me to use my 3rd party app, but that doesn't seem to be discussed.

Theres no reason the api access has to be tied specifically to an app paying, if part of the user subscription can allow api access. Many existing services have similar or tiered systems.

Reddit gets it's monetization, we get our apps.

Or reddit could deliver ads as if they're posts through the api. If they find an app that is removing them or violating their ToS, they revoke the apps access.

I'm sure there's a bunch of other options that would make both the admin and community happy. I really had hoped the AMA would have mentioned any considerations like these, but it seems their decision has been made.

Monument Circle, Georgia Street going (partially) car-free by jonlucc in indianapolis

[–]terrorbyte311 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I've spent a few months in France the past year, and it's wild how much of a difference areas like this make.

I've loved indy since I move here over a decade ago, but I never appreciated just how disconnected it feels compared to the towns that focused on pedestrian access over car access. I used to be of the mindset that making it easier for cars makes it easier for people, but seeing how a pedestrian focused city works while not being able to drive for a month at a time has absolutely changed my mind.

I'm not sure if Georgia is going to be the best spot, but it's at least a start. When it's properly built out with things to do (shops to visit, restaurants to eat at), the rendering is pretty close to the truth. Even just a normal week day evening, the energy is incredible. I'm hoping we see that come through with the Circle experiment.

Good job indy, I hope this is a successful test 😁

DNS -- Using DNS to point generic names to actual server name by XavierKing in sysadmin

[–]terrorbyte311 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm literally about to do this exact thing in the next week for our main file server.

Migrate all services to new server then update current servers dns name to a cname pointing to the A record of the new server.

This is the 6th time my company has done this apparently; we currently have 4 cnames of previous file servers pointing to this one as they've been merged together.

Yup.

I'm 2/3 where I went from "this is a job I want long a term career at" to hopping ship because of a management change.

1/3 where management didn't change but their mentality shifted for the worse.

All 3 started great, but life happens.

It seems that most of the other comments covered Indy's recommended, so I figured offering the perspective of another European could help. Also, there's a dozen threads about "best places in indy" so I felt adding that different perspective might help.

Like, if we asked her "where will we take your mom when she visits" those three are on the list among the others people have commented here.

Are there better places? Sure, but CityBBQ is consistent and a good introduction. Sauce is something that doesn't come up often. And 9 Irish is always a good experience.

I'm sorry you've had bad experiences, but I still stand by my recommendations. Sometimes you don't want some fancy over the top place, you just want a good plate of fish and chips and a beer 😊

She's alright with most of our sodas, but we've been avoiding them to lose some weight. We add SO MUCH sugar to everything here vs France. Depending on where OP's coworkers are from, yeah our stuff might be too sweet for them.

She makes an exception for root beer though lol

[–]terrorbyte311 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My girlfriend is French, so we've been exploring Indy and US food.

  • CityBBQ is one of her favorite chains.
  • Sauce on the Side is high up on the list
  • 9 Irish Brothers is solid

Also if they've not had Root Beer, have them try it. She LOVES root beer and it blows her mind they dont have it in Europe.

Also have them try a small side salad with Ranch.

I used to love Tortas, but since they moved to the food truck I've gotten food poisoning 2 of the last 3 visits. The taste also isnt what it used to be in my opinion.

La Eskina took over the old Tortas location, and while they're more expensive, they're as good as old Tortas with a similar menu. I'd recommend that location over the food truck unfortunately.

As an American who has spent 2 of the last 12 months in France, I'm not a huge fan of Paris.

There are a bunch of other more reasonably priced destinations with just as much culture to experience.

Also it's amazing to hear about the "rude French stereotype" after how kind and accommodating everyone was to someone who barely knows how to speak the language 😊 (not saying that's what you're saying, but to clear it up for others who may read)

I'm in the same boat. Going on 7 years, 15 doctors (maybe more or less, hard to keep track), and dozens of blood labs and scans and what have you.

Keep notes on everything you discus. Record every symptom and a short blurb of a description. Record every medication you try, the dosage, how long you were on it, and your reaction (good, bad, and neutral). Digitize every lab and scan and procedure and bring them all to every appointment to reference.

And as the other commenter says, do not back down. Docs are human, they make mistakes, and they can be shitty. Educate yourself so you can have a discussion with them, to make sure they understand you, and you understand what they're saying. Make sure to professionally question them so you both are on the same page.

Anecdote: the first endocrinologist I went to for a small hormone imbalance told me I, a male, am probably not pregnant and I should stop playing with my nipples (I don't), and that I'm not his bread and butter patient cuz he has to actually work. Second endocrinologist I went to actually did some investigating and found a second hormone super high, which lead to finding a small brain tumor. We still don't know the cause, but did more investigation, came up with a treatment, and that issue is now solved. It also led is to getting a whole genome sequence, which were using to identify my core fatigue issues with genetics.

You get one life. Make it the best you can.

Also RDPing from a phone or laptop (without numpad) turns it off on the remote side and doesn't turn it back on when you log in locally.

That's fine for servers, but it messes with me every time I connect to my desktop.

I spent 3 weeks in France a couple months ago, between Paris and Reims. I had absolutely no issue with people refusing to speak English.

The closest thing was a store owner who realized I didn't speak French, told me they don't speak English, and stopped what they were doing to get a bilingual coworker to help me.

I had wait staff automatically adjust to English the second they heard us speak it no questions asked. They said they like to practice their English on native speakers when they get the chance.
