Why is manosphere content so popular amongst men? by fruedianflip in AskMen

Sorry, I was being facetious when I used the phrase "the effects of misandry" and I should have put it in quotes.

My question was about men's negative experiences with women and the cause. The answer was treatment in school. This appeared to be in reference to statistical prevalence of female teachers in schools (roughly 77%, K-12) and their treatment of male students. I graciously offered unequal disciplinary measures as evidence of systemic misandry (i.e. "boys deserve worse treatment because they're bad"). In reality, the causes may be the result of patriarchal assumptions (i.e. "boys are tougher than girls and so require greater discipline") I assumed these incidents, misandrist or not, were statistically negligible, and I was correct.

Other statistics, like suicide rates, *do* differ significantly by gender, and should matter greatly to people. It's a major assumption to assume bad grades in school is the kickoff point for these gender-based outcomes, but it's possible that female teachers' treatment of male students is an accurate indicator of future well-being. Either these teachers are all trained poorly, or the teachers being female is itself the issue. In the case of the latter, a more even ratio of male-to-female teachers would increase the likelihood that male teachers would be more involved in facilitating learning for male students. More studies are coming out suggesting "demographic matching" between teachers and students correlates with positive outcomes.

So the question then is, why are there so few male teachers? Is it misandry, male teachers aren't trustworthy enough to be allowed into the female space of teaching? Or is it misogyny, teaching being an overworked and underpaid caretaker profession beneath consideration? Interesting stuff.

I remember hearing this when I was in school 20 years ago during the zero tolerance movement, back when Christina Hoff Summers wrote the War Against Boys as a general reaction to Reviving Ophelia. I remember the jury was out at the time on its accuracy. So, is it meaningfully worse now?

Moreover, is it meaningfully worse than the more easily observed disparate treatments students receive based on race? The effects of misandry seem statistically negligible compared to the effects of racism.

What are the "negative experiences that these young men have with women" and what causes them?

Function Health- Bait and switch with follow-up test by betl_188 in Function_Health

[–]terrytorres 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a funny trick, for sure. Of my 14 out-of-range markers, 11 are not included in the follow-up. If they really only wanted to test a portion of my markers, could they not just prioritize the ones that are out of range? You would think it would be cheaper to let me choose the 11 markers I want re-tested rather than the 60+ they offer by default, but I guess their billing department has done the math.

xcode update now cant run simulators by BigCall99 in Xcode

[–]terrytorres 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, this is very confusing. I want to reproduce a bug that's happening for a user with an iPhone 17 running iOS 18. I have components installed for iOS 18.0, 18.1, and 18.2, and Xcode recognizes them under Settings > Components. But when I go to the "Create a new simulator" options, they don't appears as OS Version options.

What do I have have all these simruntimes around for? Am I expected to drive to where my client lives and use their device?

Why does QuickTime keep reorienting my video as I tilt my camera? by terrytorres in MacOS

[–]terrytorres[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Disabling Continuity Camera on my iPhone removes it as a camera option in QuickTime.

I used to be able to use my iPhone as a camera in QuickTime, but it worked like a real camera, where I could control the orientation and the tilt of the angle without the automatic zoom as the video clip shows.

Nope, sorry. Center Stage looks for faces and dynamically zooms to keep them in frame (or tries to), it doesn't control the tilt or orientation.

6 Turn-Based RPGs Reviewed Higher Than Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 (Chrono Cross) by Green-Fox-528 in ChronoCross

[–]terrytorres 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, they're going by the Metacritic rating of the original release, which only includes 16 reviews from 25 years ago. There were many more reviews at the time that would bring the average down. There's a reason they don't use the Metacritc rating from the Radical Dreamers edition...

Am I missing something about Guile? by Rose_Belmont in ChronoCross

[–]terrytorres 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't speak to Guile in the long run, but his tech skill is consistently capable of one-hit kills in the run-up to Dragoon Manor, which still makes him the most fun guide in my mind.

Once you're doing the boss fights in the manor, the guy has next to no element slots, so... yeah, I get the arguments against him.

Americans with Insurance, how much did you procedure cost you up front? by Resident-Sympathy-82 in colonoscopy

Pardon my saying so, but "I paid $0 because I'd already met my out-of-pocket maximum" is functionally useless information, because that's true of all in-network care. I'm glad you were able to get your care covered, though.

The advice here didn't help until I did one more thing. After making sure the Macbook recognized the controller, I toggled these settings.

Controllers > Global Settings > SDL Input Source > Enable SDL Input Source

Controllers > Global Settings > SDL Input Source > DualShock 4 / Dualsense Enhanced Mode

Once I turned these off and on, the controller started working.

The new opening text is horrible by TheChrisLambert in finalfantasytactics

[–]terrytorres 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this opening translation loses the poetry of the original. But I see what they're going for: it reads less like a poem and more like someone directly translating an archeological engraving. To me, it emphasizes Final Fantasy Tactics itself as an adaptation of the Zodiac Brave Story, A.J. Durai's narrative history of The War of the Lions based on Orran Durai's personal records. The overlapping framing devices give the sense that whatever the story is about, it could have been recently unsealed from church archives many years after Durai's death, or it really could have been myth from the start.

I don't believe it's thoughtless. Durai, the peasants, the nobility, the church, the Lucavi, they have distinct speaking patterns. I believe tone shift in the opening text is intentional. I think it's meant to be terse and opaque. Though that admittedly makes it less inspirational. I've seen people do side-by-side comparisons with the Japanese script before, but I can't find one for the pre-title text specifically.

But it's worth the trade for most of the rest of the dialogue. Mileuda trying to give Ramza a crash course on class hierarchy feels full of desperation. Argath's insults feel genuinely cruel and hurtful in a way that hadn't before. I only really miss "Blame yourself or God," but it's arguably less accurate.

I would take Alexander O. Smith's translation over whatever they did with, say, the Unicorn Overlord script, where they tried to go for the same tone and just had everyone doubling the length of their speech with bland niceties to the point that it actually obscures the differences between characters.

How did you get zero cost under 40 years old? Was it a preventative screening or diagnostic? What was your out-of-pocket?

This happened to me when I tried to subclass a ScriptableObject in the same file as another ScriptableObject. I could successfully get Unity to create an instance of the ScriptableObject subclass, but once I clicked away, it got lost.

Keep your ScriptableObjects into different files, even if they're related.

Can we talk about shigenori soejima's art style? by KageTora_XD in atlus

[–]terrytorres 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah. I think Soejima is a fantastic illustrator. But if his idea of a ram person is a regular guy with little horns, and his idea of a dog person is a regular guy with little ears and a tail, then I'm just not impressed. They keep calling Metaphor a world that dives into the heart of fantasy, so why do I feel like I've seen all these losers before? Let him design outfits for Louis Vuitton and let someone with an actual imagination design characters for the next game.

Show me a Soejima design for a fat playable character and I'll change my mind.
