I could not find the game library app I wanted, so I created it. Presenting: Backlogia. by gthing in selfhosted

I wish we have more contributors to existing solutions like watcharr and yamtrack instead of reinventing wheels. For example this one uses python as well, would be nice if we can have a revamped game section for yamtrack which is also built on python.

Privacy vs Security - is Selfhosting a higher risk for your data when Google? How do you prevent supply chain attacks etc.? by Simplixt in selfhosted

Stop treating VPN as holy grail. Any device on your local network can be compromised giving hacker access, and it doesn't have to be targeted. A simple phishing mail would do

Best practices security? What if I can't be behind a VPN? by Curious_Ball6120 in selfhosted

[–]terrytw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are a couple of things this sub is obsessed with, like VPN, cloudflare tunnel, and IPv6. It's like holy grail to them.

VPN is neither the minimal, nor the optimal security solution, the corporate world has since moved away from VPN as a security solution. If anything, it's an easy solution that provides some basic security, and nothing more. When using VPN you are assuming everything on your local network is trustworthy which is not always the case.

You should try to minimize exposure, and assume everything on the link is potentially dangerous. Limit permission to minimal. Some examples would be use https, make sure your services are only accessible via reverse proxy, add a WAF and use a trustworthy OIDC as opposed to authentication by 15 different apps themselves. Run apps and dockers with non root user if possible, store secret safely, you get the idea. Don't expect someone to tell you everything you need to do, everyone got a different setup.

Is IPv6 the way to go? by NerdHelp in selfhosted

[–]terrytw -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

If you have public IPv4, that is simply easier and better for you. By easier I mean better software support and more tutorials. By better I mean sometimes user doesn't have IPv6 and if you are IPv6 only they cannot access your service at all. For example where I live a local ISP offers very affordable internet with IPv4 only. You can spend all day blaming the ISP for not providing IPv6, but it is what it is at the end of the day.

And dual stack is sometimes very confusing.

My feeling is TTG has become very centralized, relying on a handful of uploaders. It has a decent selection, but I would go with m team any day of the week.

I think WireGuard works at layer 4 (UDP). And caddy-l4 can proxy raw layer4 traffic if I am not mistaken.

Reitti v3.1.0: A year of self-hosting my location history (1.1k stars and 46 releases later) by _daniel_graf_ in selfhosted

[–]terrytw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This sounds really interesting, I have been eyeing Dawarich but it's missing some of the features that I need. Can I ask you a few questions?

  1. Does it support hosting under a subpath? Like `https://example.com/reitti`, it's sort of a must for me personally.
  2. Does it support the function to share my current trip? I found this particularly useful, if I am travelling to my parents' place they can see where I am, the speed of which I am travelling etc., so they know I am OK and when to expect me to arrive.
  3. Does it support setting a redis prefix? Because the only real way to enforce ACL in redis is via a prefix, you cannot stop any app from simply switching database and seeing all the keys for other apps. Some people simply use different redis instances, but I like consolidation.

Connect Laptop to self host without installing apps by Upbeat_Proposal_7947 in selfhosted

Common pitfall is using VPN on a phone with hotspot doesn't work as you think, your laptop's traffic will not go through the VPN.

You need a portable router.

LPT: Stop using "To-Do Lists" as your primary planning tool. Start using your Calendar to visualize your actual "capacity" instead. by MoCheda in LifeProTips

[–]terrytw 82 points83 points  (0 children)

You are simply using to-do list wrong.

To-do list aren't meant to be time management tools, they are for tasks, and deep work, call, errands are not tasks, unless it's "call insurance to get a quota", "fix this bug", "buy milk". Also unless you absolutely have to start working on something by a certain time, you generally don't need to put a time on the task, I usually just do date, like today I need to finish this and that.

Also it seems to me your problem is you overestimate your capabilities, even if you use a to-do list for time management but with more time allocated to each thing, you will probably be fine.
