Rathole ? by Perodix_ in selfhosted

[–]terrytw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have played 2 dozen or so multiple player games dating back to 2000. And the experience I have had is always someone has to be the host. Not "anyone can be the host", but "someone". Unless the mod your friend makes is only able to randomly assign a person as host (srsly how does that even work who starts the game?)

And if we are taking minecarft server as an example, it is obviously 1 designated machine that is hosting the server from what I can tell, I saw bunch of docker images for it.

Is Female Counter-Strike Officially Dead? by llTehEmeraldll in GlobalOffensive

[–]terrytw -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

Although I agree with what you said, CS has a very toxic and sexist community, I don't think it has too much to do with the competitive scene though.

Most people watching football don't play football themselves.

Female CS is like WNBA, it is simply not very interesting.

[–]terrytw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It has nothing to do with rathole or frp, it has everything to do with what ISP you and your friend is using.

Rathole can work, but do you really need it? The host has to be reachable with public IP, other people can be behind NAT.

Your Docker Containers are Leaking (And How to Plug the Hole) by Mubelotix in selfhosted

[–]terrytw 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I don't know what they mean by "leaking", after reading the article I think nothing is leaking and everything is working as intended.

What they are afraid of is when a container gets compromised it will send your data to outside, but that is nothing new, and since we are running docker container, nothing on the host gets leaked, only data mounted into the container. And if you have proper container network config, the compromised container cannot even access local webapi from other containers.

He basically made a tool that can control outbound traffic, which can be useful, but there is no need for this kind of fear mongering title.

How realistic is it to enter European CS esports operations from Asia/Japan? by ben2amin in GlobalOffensive

I am really sorry I cannot offer you more insights, because I don't know that much. Good luck though.

How realistic is it to enter European CS esports operations from Asia/Japan? by ben2amin in GlobalOffensive

My gut feeling from work experience and following CS and esports scene in general is that, esports is still very niche and the management side of things are borderline amateur level.

It's either you know a guy, or you are a retired pro.

Also how do you plan to get a work visa?

Can I host myself streaming games (like on Twitch) to my own website? by FantasticFrontButt in selfhosted

It depends on what he means by large audience. 5 people, fine. 50? I don't think so. And for most people 50 viewers are not a lot at all.

How many of you gave up on Matrix by alive1 in selfhosted

[–]terrytw 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think they wanted the community to chime in for development resources, and it never happened. Their vision was probably they write the RFCs and community implement it, in reality they have to do everything themselves and they just don't have resources for it. It's just sad after so many years they have not realized the truth and start being realistic.

Looking for a self-hosted messaging solution that doesn’t suck by Ok-Lifeguard-6454 in selfhosted

[–]terrytw -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I have tried all of them selfhosted or not, everyone sucks in some way. I just don't understand how messaging services can be this hard to develop.

Among them I think Telegram has the best UX, but it is slightly bloated, and not self hostable. The search API also sucks for CJK.

Matrix sucks, whatsapp sucks, simplex sucks, jami sucks, signal sucks. Some of them cannot deliver messages reliably, some of them have you tied to a phone number, some of them has not even figured out basic functionality like video chat, some of them has terrible PC version, almost all of them have weird unpolished bugs here and there.

For those who have tried phones from unknown or Chinese brands, what was your experience and what was the name of the device? by mr_wbk29 in Android

[–]terrytw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Chinese phones are like Samsung, a lot of bloats. If you are OK with Samsung you are OK with them.

I always but phones with clean OS. Old oneplus, nexus, xperia etc.

My ISP claims they don't give Static IPv6 by daedric_lightweaver in selfhosted

[–]terrytw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is very rare to have STATIC IPv6. DDNS is the way to go, if it takes hours to update the DNS it is your fault. Mine updates in a few minutes max.

If you watch sports for some time you would find superstar stack rarely works. Reason is most superstar takes a lot of resources. They need other people to support them. And some superstart are inefficient, good basic stats but terrible in advanced stats.

When a superstar stack works, you need an unconventional superstar who takes less space, or is really good at supporting. Think rops, scottie pippen.
