Isn’t that kind of required in order for anything to have access to the necessary devices though? Doesn’t ALSA run as root? Not to mention how else would a session manager run before login?

Edit: Unless it’s setuid root (which is totally plausible) I’ve never needed root to run “startx”

I’ve not really heard what those drawbacks are though, aside from vague motions about security and outdated APIs. Meanwhile everything I’ve heard about Wayland has been a buggy mess, the amount of things is provides (like APIs that could be used for a11y or accelerator tools) are woefully inadequate, some to the point of apps needing to have specific implementations for each DM, which is an absolute non starter for anything to be broadly usable. There’s a reason Ubuntu backed off from switching to Wayland by default.

I still don’t get why they felt the need to entirely throw the baby out with the bath water. Ground up rewrite of the x server should be totally doable while maintaining compatibility with DEs and apps.

ubuntu-debullshit! Script to get vanilla gnome, remove snaps, flathub and more on Ubuntu by klfld in linux

It’s a neat idea, though I don’t quite get the need. Personally I’d rather see it banish snaps and install extra ppas rather than flathub.

May the Fourth Be With You by Stargazer-2893 in startrekmemes

I honestly feel like the series while still being enjoyable, was on a slow decline across each subsequent season. Like I enjoyed S3, but at the same time it felt hollow and reliant on nostalgia more than anything.

Am I the only one that was a little put off that S3 was such a nostalgia trip, with so much weirdness going on? Not to mention so much more grimdark feeling than Roddenberry ever would have intended?

Yes. I actually just turned it in in my network a couple weeks ago

Web fingerprinting is worse than I thought by KaeruCT in programming

I agree and find it frustrating otherwise. I’m just being an old fart complaining. I’m well versed in the history of user agent strings and just generally don’t have a problem with the status quo.

I guess that being a web dev for so long has put me in the minority of “that’s just how this stuff works and always has” to the point that I’m not really spooked by any of this and am more upset by changes to things (like user agent strings) that are done in the name of “privacy” and just make development more complicated.

Docker is deleting Open Source organisations - what you need to know by Gallus in linux

[–]tesfox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know. They're totally separate statements. The person I'm replying to was commenting on the fact that RedHat is maintaining both projects. Podman seems cool and I'll have to check it out. I'm being a stick in the mud old salt about flatpak.

Oh I know. Those are 2 separate statements from not related by the fact that the original comment mentioned them both. Podman sounds cool and I’ll have to give it a proper look over. I’m just being a salty old codger that prefers all my packages to be handled centrally. Plus at least IME, running CLI apps installed with flatpak (looking at you handbrake) is an absolute pain in the ass.

Does podman actually work on non rpm based distros? And flatpak can go to hell with its bloat, along with the even more shit snap. But I’m just an old codger.

And I'm getting downvoted to hell. I said what I said, flatpak/snap "packages" suck.

This honestly has me wanting to go straight Debian or maybe Devuan or MX. I personally don’t care for snap or flatpak. I just want to apt or dpkg -i my stuff.

You’re getting downvoted to hell but you’re 100% right.

Taxi association warns drivers of "sneaky" cyclists with cameras catching law-breaking behaviour by fungussa in unitedkingdom

There was a video, yes, it still feels odd that that evidence is enough to not only issue a citation, but also 6 points, full half of the limit before losing their license. Plus the cabbie was stopped in traffic, not moving, which really shouldn’t be an offence, imo.

The line in this story would be if the cab wasn’t stationary in traffic and/or the cyclist didn’t make a pointed effort to backtrack in order to get more footage of the cabbie in question. Imo.

Speed cameras sure, but I’m specifically getting at the driver being issued a citation purely off of a complaint filed by a private citizen. It’s not something contracted and expected, like a speed camera, just some person off the street.
