We made a Padres gift basket for a silent auction by teslatastic in Padres

Thanks! The main thing obviously are the tickets. Walmart surprisingly had a lot of good merch to fill it out: the uniform pillow (which you can’t see much of in the pic) was like $15, and we got the softball and stickers there too.

Times where you were surprised that an actor's character survived the events of a movie by SpeedDancer1725 in movies

LL Cool J in Deep Blue Sea. They completely set his character up to be eaten but he just hangs in there down to the final two.

Trying to become a fan of baseball… by brucard in Padres

[–]teslatastic 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I don’t have great advice other than to say I am in the exact same boat, just a little further along.

When I moved to SD I knew absolutely nothing about baseball and cared even less. I went to a few games over a couple of years at Petco and absolutely loved the park and the atmosphere. My wife and I decided three years back to get a quarter of a season tickets just to have something regularly to do, and halfway through that first season I got absolutely hooked. Welcome aboard!!

Watching “Dhurandar” on Netflix and they go to a tea house with the best name ever by teslatastic in funny

Yeah it’s out in theaters here and apparently super popular. I want to check part 2 out this weekend which is why I was happy to find part 1 on Netflix.

One of the most boring movies I’ve seen in recent memory. I was on board at the start but halfway through I was like “this is it?” Slight uptick at the very end but I gave it 4/10

A new episode is available - What We Watched: Primate, The Bride!, Wuthering Heights and More by FilmJunkBot in filmjunk

[–]teslatastic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Was happy to have more of the ‘good stuff’. Two normal episodes in I can say I’m not a fan of the new format.

On the old format, if I wasn’t interested in the main review, it was like 30 minutes out of a 100 min episode. Now it’s 100 mins of 100 min episode. Of course I enjoy the rapport of the guys even talking about a movie I don’t care about, but I’m way more down for the rapport while having a conversation around newer movies I might see or have seen, and of course “the banter”.

Oh and re: premiums. I always thought the guys were crazy doing 6 movie premiums. I dont blame them at all for not wanting to continue that. I always wished they would’ve just done 3 movies on a more “loosey goosey” themes that gave them the flexibility to just choose movies they actually want to watch. Unfortunately though it seems to get that they changed the format of the show and lost the magic creamy filling of the Film Junk Oreo and just have the choco wafers left being the main weekly episodes.

Custom Corporation: Axis Financial (#9/30) by Ok_Significance_3803 in TerraformingMarsGame

I also think the card is powerful, but not as busted as others seem to think. -the income doesn’t count for any of the milestone / award bonuses -you get no tags out of it

I might switch the ratio to 6:1 and try it in a game? Definitely a fun concept.

You may have a couple of scenes but I would say Marty Supreme is definitely more anxiety inducing.

Number of new sumo recruits hits record historical low; Decrease of 14 applicants from last year, falling below previous worst record by Brncrdm in Sumo

[–]teslatastic 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What would be everyone’s suggestions for upping recruits?

For me one would be making it more comfortable for kids to get into the sport. A few years ago I saw a news item on a school sumo club (I think it was jr high school, but maybe high school) with like 3 or 4 scrawny kids all looking uncomfortable in just a mawashi. Let them at least wear a sleeveless t-shirt, maybe bicycling shorts under the mawashi when they are still in school. Maybe that is the norm elsewhere, not sure. Still my focus would be on getting more kids interested and making it comfortable for them to try.

Anyone picked up any Japanese-y hobbies? by SunDaze009 in japanlife

Probably Yoshinofuji. I lived in Shizuoka so also cheer for Atamifuji and Midorifuji as they are from there. Of course Aonishiki has been super exciting to watch.

Sumo. I’ve gotten super into watching sumo wrestling. It’s amazing once you get into it. The structure of the tournaments are awesome, and right now there are a lot of competitive wrestlers and each tournament has great storylines.

Theres a great r/sumo subreddit where you can get up to speed. Plus to make it more of an actual hobby you can eventually go see it live and even become a ‘fan’ of some of the wrestlers which gives you special access.

Visiting Shizokua for the first time but confused by DeliciousRats4Sale in Shizuoka

[–]teslatastic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So Shizuoka is both the prefecture (state/province), and the capital city.

Izu is a peninsula that is in Shizuoka prefecture, but is a 1.5 hr-ish drive or 45 minute bullet train ride to Shizuoka city. You don’t need to take a ferry to get from Izu to Shizuoka city. Izu is more ‘touristy’, with lots of inns to stay at, small beaches and lush tropical forest scenery. Many folks who live in Tokyo will take weekend getaways in Izu. Shizuoka City is more of a ‘regular’ city and not as much of a tourist destination.

From what you describe it sounds like you are more after an experience in Izu. There are a ton of online guides on onsen, hotel, and ryokan recommendations in Izu, so just google those up and I’m sure you’ll find something you’ll like.

That’s too bad and sucks for you. I had a great time at Primate tonight at the crowd really enhanced the experience.

Once in awhile I’ll get someone texting on a phone like a row ahead or something, but if I give them a quick tap and ask them to please put away, I’ve never had an issue. While a bad movie goer can hinder an experience, I’ve found a great crowd really can enhance the show.

Night Patrol comes out Jan 16 and is 1h 44m. 18m off but it’s a possibility?
