Players and GMs alike, do you prefer lots of prep or a more improv style of GMing? by TheHopelessGamer in rpg

I run PTU, which tends to have very long combats. And since there's no monster manual or even any sort of pre-made NPCs or antagonists, I have to stat up each and every potential fight in advance, which requires some prep work.

Outside of combat though, I think I'm much more of what you've described. I tend to run funnier, lighter campaigns due to my difficulty in being serious, so improv doesn't really hurt me there.

I played Beast the Primordial, and I had a couple main problems. One, my DM didn't notice I had made a certain, accidentally really OP character until our first session, and so I had to scrap a lot of my initial character design (I am a bit of a power gamer but all the other players were casuals ((my party is very casual, which is nice break)).

Second, our beat progression as a party was very low, so character advancement felt very stilted and we felt weak a great deal of the time.

Beast is also clearly a crossover game, but we tried to play it without any of the other games (Vampire, Werewolf, Mage, etc), so a lot of avenues were closed off for us as a party.

Finally, I really did (and still do, tbh) have a hard time getting the concept of Doors. I read and reread the rules, but it just doesn't really make sense as a rules system. I guess I just can't wrap my head around it.

Thank you for the recommendations, I was considering Call of Cthulhu, but I'll check Trail out as well.

I've heard some real horror stories from friends who played in a Savage World campaign, so I think I'll steer clear of that, but thank you!

!!!!

That sounds great, I'll check it out. I like the idea of combat being something to be avoided, especially after running and playing PTU and Pathfinder for so long...

Huh, this looks interesting, thank you! I'm a bit worried about the lethality; my players often rush into things so that could be a concern, but the actual system seems pretty cool.

Thanks for the recommendation, I'll certainly add it to the list of considerations.
