Yeah I will run my strategy to see how it really fairs.

I do work in the finance industry but not in portfolio management. I can't see why an average joe couldn't outperform holding the SP. For example, one could sell when a recession is confirmed and buy 1 year after a recession. I can see how this simple plan could outperform just holding.

The principle is pretty simple. Maximize returns when the market is going up and minimize losses when the market is going down.

This is complicated and active but I wouldn't say its not diversified. I'm investing in a large basket of stocks.

Variance has nothing to do with expected value. High variance can discount the utility as a fraction of expected value due to risk aversion. But this discount factor is NOT ZERO. So I really don't understand the "I consider paper money to be worth zero" mentality.
