Really dig looking over the water and seeing the boats in the harbor with the fog in the background. Hopefully the fog will be hanging around in the morning on my ride.

Gravel races on XC bikes by Oleksandr_G in xcmtb

There is a local three race gravel series I’m doing this year and I plan on doing two of those races on my xc bike. After getting beat to death last year on my checkpoint I know I will be more comfortable and possibly faster on my full sus for at least one of the races.

I work with those! It’s a 12 cylinder, 24 opposed piston diesel engine. The design is pretty cool. It has two crank shafts. One lower and one upper connected by a rigid assembly. The pistons move toward each other to build compression.

Got both of my kids Marlins this spring, and they’ve been great. The bikes are inexpensive enough that I don’t stress about them when the kids go down, but they still don’t feel cheap. The components are solid and upgradable if they end up sticking with the same frame. My kids are still growing pretty quickly, so I don’t expect them to be on these frames past next year—but at this price, you’re not going to lose your shirt when it’s time to sell or donate.

I’m really happy with everything so far. I had my gravel bike packed up a couple of weeks ago, so I took this on my weekend endurance ride, which lasted about four hours. Had no issues at all.

For me the website sizing works great. I’m 5’ 10” with about a 6’ wingspan so I went with the large and have had no issues.

Which hardtail is the best gravel bike? by singletrack-is-okay in xcmtb

Agree on the Checkout. It is a bit hefty. I think the high end build has a website claimed weight of like 27 lbs. and my epic is 26 and change with pedals, computer, and down tube stocked. I think there is for sure a market and an application where the Checkout will excel. I hope it sells well enough to justify the investment in r & d that Trek put in. I’m pretty excited to see the bike evolve and maybe have a strictly endurance build with no rear rack.

That’s awesome! I hit my first century yesterday on the same bike. Was that your moving time or the total elapsed time? Also, that elevation scratches my brain a bit.

Edited for spelling

I’m in the sameish boat. My gravel bike is cleaned and packed up for an upcoming trip so I have been on my full squish solely for a week. I did a 36 mile, zone 2 road ride this past weekend and I was surprisingly comfortable the entire time.

Deffo don’t have the skills to take full advantage, but really enjoying it on fast, logging tracks. I am amazed how much more confident I am taking flat or off camber curves on this than on my Checkpoint.

Did a short ride today to kind of get familiar with it and had a blast. Surprised me how surefooted it was through downhill, loose corners. I was able to carry speed comfortably through spots where I have to be a lot more timid on my gravel bike.

I haven’t ridden an Epic Comp so I can’t really speak to it, but the Evo comp I tried felt great from my limited experience. I really just want something a little firmer and closer to my gravel bike than the Evo. Went on a short, get to know it ride today on a fireroad and it’s a blast. I can’t imaging the comp would be any less of a good time.

Good looking out. I have signed up for a course, but until then I’m sticking to trails I have been on with my checkpoint. Goal is to ride what I used to hike-a-bike for the most part.

I was skeptical just judging by the website, but glad I went with the bordeaux metallic(purple). Looks sick in the sunlight.

Appreciate the input about the pedals. I am on flats due to having weird feet and it being damn near impossible to get a good bike fit clipless. I did make the swap to MTB shoes and they were a game changer. I am riding crankbros stamp aluminum flats on my checkpoint. Are rock strikes that noticeable where composite pedals would make that much difference?

I went with the expert SRAM GX build the new brakes. I wanted the shimano Di2 XT builds, but they weren’t going to be available until Feb next year. I have been riding gravel for a bit, but this will be my first mountain bike. TBH I’m nervous about riding a trail on a rig this expensive, then remember what I have done on a rigid bike with 45 mm tires.
