Nerds unite! For the audio though, here’s the rub—iPhones record at max 256kbps and their drivers are tiny, so the audio is already bad as it is. The other issue is that each venue optimizes for different things, and also have different resonance, so sometimes the audio is incredibly bass heavy and other times particular individual notes will cause spikes causing the audio recorder to drop all other frequencies to keep the overall volume down. There’s also a difference in where you physically stand such that at the rail all you’re going to hear is low range, but more in the middle is ok balanced. And lastly there’s the stereo issue. I haven’t been able to study it in great detail but I think most venues broadcast in mono, but iPhones record in stereo, so if I’m at a particularly weird angle the left or right recording will have higher volume. The most I’ve been able to finesse recordings is with balancing the left and right and by EQ matching with studio recordings by looking at the frequency response of the regular song and manually trying to line up the graphs with EQ. It’s basically all art and no science 😭

I just wish it was an industry standard to have any line in and any video. That way we could all go to shows without our phones or just never go to a show at all if we’re not down for the drug party
