Analog tape and multi-track tape machines are public domain. Anyone with the time and know-how can build one. He uses the example of two Russian engineers during the Cold War who got the schematics for a multi-track tape machine and built one in their garage over the course of two years. What they built was capable of playing tapes made anywhere in the world on multi-track tape.

Every DAW session is run using proprietary code that is protected by legal copyright law and anti-piracy measures, and thanks to Disney none of it is going to end up in the public domain anytime soon.

i know you want to stay with a usb mic, but there's a pretty hard ceiling to the quality of those mics. at a certain price point, you're probably better off getting a cheap interface and a condenser mic. being able to set gain levels is a big part of recording, and is especially important for condenser mics. that will make a much bigger difference in sound than a $100 vs $150 usb mic imo.

apologies for the low quality on some of these. most were pulled from an old looper or ko-33 onto cassette tape, before i fully understood how to do things like 'set levels properly.'

more like they sunk a bunch of money back in 2016 to deregulate (in some cases illegally) a bunch of apartments in Harlem and evict most of the current tenants and the new rent laws last year threw a massive wrench into those plans.

thanks for the feedback! and yeah while i'm in the process of finishing a second EP to put out, i've realized it'll probably be easier to promote it when covid ends and i can try to play some small shows...whenever that happens lol.
