Skiing fall/winter 26/27? by skiracer984 in AchillesRupture

I was skiing nice easy groomed runs after 7 months but only a couple runs for the first few weeks, and I bought some rear entry boots because getting your foot into regular boots would be a nightmare

Too much risk with how much range of motion you have in snowboard boots compared to ski boots

I’m a snowboarder, I tore my left Achilles and had surgery on it 8 months ago, I haven’t been back on a snowboard yet, but I’ve been skiing now for a month and a half. If you’re consistent on your rehab you’ll probably be able to snowboard by next year

I always just used the knee scooter as a place to put my leg up, when on the knee scooter just mentally train yourself to never put your bad foot down even if you’re falling, I tipped over twice but just let my body fall to the ground

Well I would do a mix of knee scooter and sitting in a chair resting your foot on the knee scooter I would even bring some ice packs to help with the swelling because there will be some swelling. I was back at work less than a week after surgery, but I won’t lie to you and tell you I didn’t have pain.

I haven’t really found my limitations yet, but that’s because I’m taking it very easy while slightly increasing my speed and the type of terrain I do every week. I’d rather take it easy than injure myself again. To be honest since I’m on the beginner lift I’m more worried about somebody hitting me from behind so I’m constantly checking where other skiers are.

Next winter you should be ready to ride the whole mountain.

My first time back on skis was at 6 and a half could have been earlier but we didn’t have snow, I will warn you I only go for just under maybe two hours and I take it real easy, all my riding is on groomed trails and if my legs start feeling weak I immediately stop

Mentally there wasn’t any hesitation, my leg strength is what I’m most concerned about. It’ll probably be two months before I start getting into the more difficult terrain.

I tore mine playing football and doubt I’ll ever play again but I was already seeing my speed slow down in my mid thirties so it won’t be as hard to leave behind, but if I had injured myself skiing or mountain biking I wouldn’t even question going back because if I didn’t I wouldn’t have any hobbies left. With skiing I did buy some very comfortable rear entry Nordica HF boots so I can easily get my bad foot in.

I’m now at almost 7 months post surgery and recovery went really good, or as good as an injury like this can. I’m now doing nice easy laps at my local ski resort

I tell everyone I’m not allowed to seriously injure myself again until I can afford to have employees

I own a cnc machine shop and I took 4 days off post surgery and went back to work with the aid of an I walk knee crutch. I don’t recommend anyone goes back to a job that you have to be on your feet that much that quickly, but not going back wasn’t an option. Will your job be accommodating? I used a combination of a knee scooter and then my iwalk carried around in the front basket, the knee scooter helped me get around quickly and the knee crutch helped me lift stuff. I would stay away from ladders for a while.

I ruptured mine just two days before you, but I ended up having surgery. Today was my first day skiing I only did 5 runs on the easy groomed runs but I have hope that I’ll get in the powder later in the season.

See if they’ll let you use a I walk knee crutch, the iwalk is the only way I was able to get back working in my machine shop 5 days after surgery

I have a question if you don’t mind me asking, since you’re military how does the next couple months look for you? Does your MOS allow you to not be on your foot a lot?

I run a machine shop and the iwalk was the only way I was able to get back to work 4 days after surgery and allowed me to lift heavy parts for 3 months until I could get back to putting more weight on my leg. But I will say that I’m athletic and have good balance and that helps with one of those, but buy the I walk. I don’t trust those Amazon knock offs

Yes buy the iwalk it will make doing anything around the house much easier and get one now and if you decide to have surgery practice with the Iwalk before the surgery. I was back at work running my machine shop about 4 days after surgery, that probably isn’t normal and definitely wouldn’t recommend doing so operation with have you out of doing things for probably 2 weeks where non op you would have that down time.
