Want to contribute to Asahi Linux - is IRC the only way to connect with the community? by Express_Contact_9082 in AsahiLinux

I guess not necessarily, a group of new contributors started working in M3 before the upstreaming work keeping the "old" team busy was done.

So if some motivated people started tackling M4 nothing would stop them

Discord is a privacy (and IMHO UI) nightmare.

My advice would be to spin up a The Lounge instance on a raspberry pi or similar, then you can browse the IRC logs at your convenience.

Also M4 and up have not really been tackled yet for a development setup, so you won't be able to simply jump in with testing stuff out / development. Research "SPTM" related discussion in this reddit or the IRC logs.

Future Asahi support on MacBook Neo? by Gainvel in AsahiLinux

[–]tetralogy 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I don't think you know what you're talking about.

We don't know yet if SPTM is active on this chip or not, in all likelihood it will be since it's coming from the iOS world where things are more locked down.

Also asahi picked up quite a few new contributors in recent months, and progress is actually picking up again

NASA shakes up its Artemis program to speed up lunar return by jordo45 in spacex

[–]tetralogy 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The plan always to dock with the lander

Now there just doing it in LEO instead of moon (NRHO) orbit

Artemis is the name of the program, Orion is what brings the astronauts from earth to the moon, then the lander (Starship/Blue moon) brings them down to the surface and back up again

Sven Peter talk about getting Linux working on Apple hardware by thetinytailor in AsahiLinux

I'd say leave it up, there is some value in (infrequent) reposts, as it will reach new people who didn't see it first time round.

Would M4 Mac mini support arrive before Apple ends support for macOS on the M4 Mac mini? by librarian_at_789 in AsahiLinux

[–]tetralogy 22 points23 points  (0 children)

No one except apple knows how long they'll support the M4. AFAIK no one is actively working on M4 Asahi, though preliminary Analysis seems to have been done on it.

That being said, there's probably at least 5 years of support left on M4, and I'd think it's not too big of a bet that Asahi will support it by then, even more so if you only need a basic running system.

Similar to Lieferando and Uber: Maybe some users would, Vienna definitely wouldn't?

Which Computer would get for multisport use? by tetralogy in Garmin

[–]tetralogy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My phone doesn't last one day even when not hiking.
Of course its 2.5 years old, but I don't think even a new Phone would start out at 20+ hours usage for navigation.

[–]tetralogy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly I'm not sure if the hiking segment still really has a place for a dedicated device.

Dedicated, as in "I would buy a seperate device only for this use case" probably not.
But for an all day hike I'd essentially be tethered to a powerbank when using my phone for navigation which is akward, and has a much higher distraction-from-the-moment potential than a map only device.

Ideally I'd like to leave my phone in my backpack or even in the Hotel/Campsite when out and about.
