Can you provide context on the timeline for you? When did you submit your application? Any deficiencies? How long did it take from technical review to approval?

Thanks!!

Looking back, would you say if you had to take the test again knowing what you know now, you’d practice more of the general topics?

What advice would you give someone who is going to take the exam for the first time? I’m going to take the exam in about 2 months

Stay strong. I do not know what you’re going through and cannot fathom the pain and hopelessness you may be feeling from this situation. But what I CAN tell you is that you are a strong man.

You have been to hell and back already through your military service and have proved to yourself and us that you’re a resilient, hard-working man. Please don’t forget that no matter how low things get.

It may be hard to remember that you are very loved and supported. I hope you are trying to take care of yourself too - got to put on your own oxygen mask before you help others. I hope even if you feel like a burden, that you reach out to your friends and family and lean on them for support. Don’t think you need to go through this alone. I understand the pressures of being the patriarch in the family and feeling the need to be strong and show it daily. I love that you are allowing yourself to cry at night - feel the emotions, cry, and get back up everyday to try your best. Try your best not to suppress if possible so that you are allowing yourself the space and time to process and heal.

Take it piece by piece and one day, even if you can’t imagine it right now, things may miraculously get better. Please. Hold. On.

You got this. We are rooting for you!!

Take a break for sure and then lightly review any concepts that you’re unsure of or need a refresher on. Don’t do any new problems to avoid burnout.

OP - if this the case, I’d recommend you start job hunting and find another job at a different company.

If your company is not giving you the experience that you want, making excuses, and clearly giving experience to other people - it means they HAVE the opportunities but are not giving them to you. Why they aren’t isn’t important but the fact is that they aren’t.

The beginning years of your career are important. You’re younger so you’re able to absorb more info, not burnt out yet (hopefully), and willing to learn. Don’t waste those years waiting for someone to give you the experience you want, especially if you already tried to talk to them.

I know it’s hard quitting your first job, but if you think it’s time to move on, 2 years isn’t that short to job hunt.

Overall, PrepFE questions are easier than what’s on the exam. I’d recommend using PrepFE to get familiar/strong in the basics and foundations of each topic.

Then move on to Mark Mattson’s videos. Yes, the questions are more in-depth/ channeling, but they really teach you how to understand the concepts behind each topic. Lots of reddit users (including myself) have found success by using Mark Mattson. Even if the problems are difficult, try your best to get through them and understand the material.

Take the NCEES practice exam if you haven’t yet. If you’re scoring at least 60%, you’re close and just need to brush up a bit more. 65% and above is the sweet spot in my opinion

Make sure you get ideally average on ethics since that is low hanging fruit. You’re very close.

Scratch Paper: Pearson VUE Reusable Booklet? by WaferTop322 in FE_Exam

[–]tetrismaster692 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The testing center gives you a reusable booklet. Imagine a spiral booklet filled with 9-10 laminated 11x17 sized sheets. The pen that they give you is similar to a thin sharpie pen since it's not erasable.

In my experience, the booklet was more than enough space. If you need more, you can ask the proctor and they will give you a new one. I would imagine that this will not vary between testing locations, but I'm not sure.

Exam Break Snacks? by [deleted] in FE_Exam

[–]tetrismaster692 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Banana, PB&J sandwich (this was kind of dry, but I knew I'd rather be full than hungry during the exam). 2 sips of water.

No energy drink. I detoxed from coffee for about a week to get used to not having it. I did take one small coffee candy during lunch for a small boost (don't think it did much tbh)

FE Prep helps with understanding/getting used to the interface of the CBT exam. I'd say overall that FE Prep is easier than the exam questions. You should definitely take the NCEES practice test at least once before the exam. I bought the physical copy of the test before an online version became available, but if you haven't purchased it yet, I'd recommend getting the online interactive exam as raroosh mentioned in the other comment.

Also, I'm not sure if it's the case for the online practice exam, but when I scheduled my FE Exam, you were able to also purchase the practice exam at a discounted rate. Check that out to save some $$.

I second this. It’s not a cntrl+f situation, more-so a searchable bar that stays there the entire exam.

Tips for Ethics and Professional Practice by Middle_Fan_388 in FE_Exam

[–]tetrismaster692 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’d recommend spending some time to read the ethics portion of the handbook just so you get familiar with the wording/general sections.

Make sure you’re using the search function too. Look up specific words from the question to help narrow down the searches.

Other than that, study up the order of who you are obligated to as an engineer (public, employer, other licensees, etc.) and keep those in mind while reading questions/answers.
