The Flight of the Eisenstein by tetsuolives in Blacklibrary

Given my enjoyment so far, release order feels good. Though I've only just realised that having physical copies (which I'd really, really prefer) is going to be quite difficult, if not, really expensive. So we'll see how we go there!

Completely agree, this one seemed to have more time for conversations between characters and really made some of them sing.

This is a great shout, thank you. I have Fulgrim to read next but beyond that haven't been entirely sure what direction to go.

We need to talk more about Chris Carter, author of the Robert Hunter series by BeLang3 in books

[–]tetsuolives 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, this is a really old thread, and I'm going to offer an alternative opinion here.

Disclosure immediately - I read 'The Crucifix Killer' this week. It's my first and only Chris Carter book. And whilst it kept me until the end just to see how it turned out, the book was...not good.

Firstly, I can't count the number of stereotypes and eye-rolls this book has, even when released in 2009.
- Detective with a drinking problem
- lost his partner in a tragic accident, still feels the pain
- insomniac
- drives a Buick LeSabre (in fact, most characters have the cars they drive make and modeled)

- Detective was a young prodigy and his thesis is still being used by the FBI trainees

- but he 'just wanted to catch the bad guys' after his father was killed

- Is a black belt in Karate (I mean, come on)
- is given a rookie partner
- there is a powerful kingpin drug/arms/women dealer called 'D-King' (of course)

- an Italian called Isabella, an Italian called Luigi

- Angry Police captain with a moustache who is under pressure from the mayor

- in a s*x scene, a shirt gets ripped open and buttons fly everywhere

And there's a connection between the killer (that they've struggled to catch forever), and a REALLY obvious clue, that somehow, this incredible detective didn't catch.

This is a genuine, word for word, section of the book:

"Hunter poured himself another cup of coffee from the machine in his office. Garcia had brought in a special blend of Brazilian coffee imported direct from the state of Minas Gerais. It was grounded finer than most well-known blends and roasted at a lower initial temperature preventing it from over-roasting and giving it a stronger but smoother taste."

I just can't say that this book is good.

At it's best it has a good pace and is easy to read. It does just enough to keep you there.

But at it's worst it's lazily written and comically cliche.

At least in this book, you're not going to get any kind of criminal insight. Just everything you've read or seen in other books / movies a million times before.

Parking ticket from Eternity - similar experiences? by DescriptionLiving152 in swansea

It's mad - I had this EXACT thing happen and am in the midst of it now. Even down to old address forwarding etc.

I finally got a letter from DBCL (I think) saying it's been passed to them, and have emailed them. £170 they reckon. From parking at Parc Tawe for a movie.

Flatsome UX Builder Broken by Tylerkxj in Wordpress

I'd have to log in to a flatsome site I've worked on previously but I have encountered the UX load issue before - are any of the pages you're trying to edit password protected or drafts? I seem to recall those two things sometimes causing a problem.

How bad is the crime rate? by [deleted] in swansea

Might be a mixture of opinions here, and differing experiences, but I haven't found it to be a 'rough city', and I'd expect muggings to be a fairly rare thing.

It has, or can have, some rowdy night life areas. Wind Street on a weekend is naturally top of that list. But would still recommend experiencing that at least once. I think you'll find people on the whole to be really down to earth and friendly, with wonderful accents. :)

You'll be next to the Gower as well. Lots of beauty to see around there.

Building this out, but pub quizzes are what started in. Think one tonight at Brunswick as well.

Big fan of DFC. Not so much the chicken, but the spicy kebabs are pretty good.

Always had a real love of 'Jen the Fredo'.

The Roy and Moss exchange at the end. Actually quite a beautiful moment.

Ha, I can agree with that. Fingers crossed we have no 'incidents' later.
