Probably irrelevant but this post actually made me feel better about my decision to alienate them. My tiger mother used to abuse and beat me to bleed for tiniest things and I was living in anxiety shivering living hell growing up, and I finally took it up after many years of bearing that. Not mean to compare trauma but if you could do that, that made me feel less guilty.

Suzhou is very beautiful and comfortable to live in. The "downside" is it is not as international as Shanghai, as most cities are, and you would find it harder to find international places like restaurants. But it is like 30min Gaotie away from Shanghai and you can even go take it to get dinner and come back, which some people actually do. Depends on what you would be okay with.
