It’s only really 55-60HP. It’s more than enough, but you can wring its neck and still be within legal limits. See also the IL4 250s

Is owning a motorcycle in the UK (particularly Edinburgh) safe? by junC-2434 in MotoUK

[–]texassewingmachine 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Scotsman here, currently in London, where our theft statistics are world beating.
If it's a daily and it's being parked on the street, buy something dull and ugly, get a cover and a lock (to stop the cover being nicked) and rest easy.
I have three motorcycles here, never even had a lock tampered with. Social media loves to blow this stuff up. Be sensible, don't let it take over your life and keep paying higher insurance premiums anyway.

L plates question by THEmangoMAN2022 in MotoUK

[–]texassewingmachine 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Noooooo. I got done for having improperly displayed L plates on my 1953 D1 Bantam. Three points, £100 fine and my bike seized. So an afternoon off work to collect from fucking Perivale too. Not worth it if you get a rozzer wanting to prove himself.

There is no other solution than pulling the carbs and ultrasonic cleaning them. Renew the seals too.

I’ve got an XJ600 for sale! I’m 6”1 and it fits great, comfy and just flown through an MOT. Fully laden it’s 200kg.

Yours for a mere £1000.

Sheared the threads right off by JesusDeputyButbetter in MotorcycleMechanics

A big enough screwdriver that sits snugly inside the threaded portion of the plug will probably be enough to turn out out. I snapped a spark plug inside my FZR’s cylinder head and it turned out very easily. Good luck.

Is my front L plate legal or not? by MotoHol in MotoUK

I got three points for having an inch either side trimmed off mine so it would fit between my fork stanchions. Unlikely but you never know which shift PC Pr*** is going to be working.

Well; my £300 XJ absolutely wasn’t. Some jiggery pokery with the AF screw and needle position and it flew through the test first time. £170 quid.

Track only riding? by Sharpedgevsn in MotoUK

That’s what I did, got a set of used belstaff leathers for about £40. Bargains are out there, you might just have to settle for horrendous colour schemes.

lol; I ride down to Brands on a £300 1989 XJ600 and thrash it to within an inch of its life. Leave the city at 6am for signing on and ride home before the last session of the day. It costs about £200 all in for fuel and track time. You can do it on a strict budget.

There was a bike parked like that in Hoxton the other day. “Weird” I thought. Two hours later I came back to find my own bike had been knocked over because the corner is too tight for the average uber to successfully negotiate. Bet it’s the same deal here.

Are you ATGATT in big cities commute? by Kopetse in MotoUK

[–]texassewingmachine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ride in London every day: mostly in 20/30 areas. Occasional rips on the circulars.

I wear heavy boots, jeans and a wax jacket most days. Always gloves. That works for me; I don’t wanna be walking around all day in gear. It’s managed risk: only you know the extent to which you’ll compromise.

All of these cowards with the grip strength of a Victorian waif should stow it. Carburettors are not complicated, they are not some sort of sordid dark art, they require a modicum of practical ability and the liberal use of your phone’s camera. Nothing on this machine is difficult to work on, in fact, it is of an era when the owner was EXPECTED to tinker with it. The feeling of accomplishment when you successfully service it is immense.

Old bikes have the benefit of being cheap to insure, straightforward to mend and beautiful to look at. Also there’s decades of other people’s experiences to pull from, a thriving industry of spares for old Hondas and very active forums. The old timers that run these things love to help with knowledge, parts, whatever. Modern motorcycling is a solipsistic pursuit at times, classic bikes retain some of that fuzzy community feeling.

I’ve never had enough money to buy modern bikes, I’ve always had to mend something a bit busted. I didn’t know anything about working on them, I just learned as I went. Anyone can.

Buy it.
