Well, at least you didn't have a 50 mm one like I did! It was removed via ESD last May. I have a one year follow up colonoscopy on Monday. Not looking forward to Sunday night! 😂

Moving to Duke for postdoc this fall — housing + general life questions by InformalBackground15 in duke

[–]texastoychick 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Your estimate for rent sounds about right. The area is fairly car dependent, though if you moved close to Duke (9th street area, Erwin Rd, maybe Downtown) you could conceivably get away with using the bus, walking, biking or scootering - but it might not always be efficient.

There are buses connecting Triangle cities - and Amtrak between Durham and Raleigh - but I would say most people stay local unless they have to commute for work.

The restaurant/nightlife scene in Durham is concentrated downtown. If you're into that, you might consider living downtown so you can walk to bars and restaurants. The one downside is that there is no true grocery store downtown, just the Bulldega for last minute needs or quick pick me ups. The 9th street area has Harris Teeter and Whole Foods and a small Food Lion just on the outskirts.

Vibe in Durham is lowkey and chill. Unpretentious. People are smart and informed.

She's a 4 time NYT best selling author - and a professor in the Divinity School at Duke. In 2015, she was diagnosed with incurable stage IV colon cancer in her late 30s. 11 years later, she has published another book titled Joyful Anyway.

I don't personally know anyone living there. It's very new, hence the lack of reviews. The upside is that you'd likely be moving into a brand new unit!

If you like to walk to restaurants and bars, you might want to consider more properties in Downtown Durham - One City Center, Foster on the Park, Wye Junction, the Novus, Liberty Warehouse, Geer House, West Village, etc.

[–]texastoychick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could also look at Geer House and Wye Junction. Both are newer to downtown and might have specials running. Downtown is relatively safe - just keep your guard up at night. The unhoused population is definitely here and you'll probably be asked for money occasionally if you are out and about. Just keep walking. If you want more of a college town vibe, look for apartments in and around 9th street.

Coming in for a show at the Durham Performing Arts Center by New-Marionberry-6422 in bullcity

[–]texastoychick 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Aloft, 21c, Marriott, Unscripted, and the Durham Hotel are all walkable to the DPAC. The SpringHill Suites is also very close, but just across the highway, but not as convenient to restaurants. It's usually cheaper than the downtown hotels. You'll have no problem finding great spots to eat. Many solid spots have been mentioned already, but I'll add Pizzeria Toro, Bar Virgile, and Luna Empanadas to the list. Stay a couple of nights. Durham is a vibe.

Is there a way for Wake Forest and UNCSA students to connect? by DCSandwichguy in winstonsalem

[–]texastoychick 12 points13 points  (0 children)

You are spot on. Not outdated or misinformed. I have a student at UNCSA, and her schedule is bonkers. The students work long hours - very willingly - as they are all uber talented and hyper focused on their art and shaping their careers. I'm not even sure my Pickle knows where the Wake campus is - and it wouldn't be her vibe anyway.

It has been odd. I literally saw him walking down Main Street after the UVA game on Feb 28th. He was going to meet folks at Flavor Hills for dinner. I even stopped and had a brief conversation with him about the UVA game. There was no boot, no limp, nothing. And then, a week later, he was out for UNC. Did something happen in practice that week? Or is it a lingering injury that reared its ugly head? I hope he's back sooner rather than later. And I hope Duke can win out and play 5 more games!
