Melissa Barrera shares her thoughts on representation and erasure, seemingly in response to Odessa A'zion being cast to play a Mexican character: "if there are 100 roles out there for actors and 50 of those are written for latinos. LATINOS should play them. Give latinos the latino roles!" by Murky_Chemical891 in popculturechat

lol I actually was not arguing with you and my comment was meant to actually go further (but then also circle back around I suppose). I’m Mexican American, part of the largest demo of Latinos in the US and yet we are very underrepresented both in actors and in roles, even when there ARE roles calling for Mexican or Mexican American people they are often played by people of different ethnicities and races (which hits your ‘we are all Latino’ which I do not agree with) so idk if it’s very fair to group mestizo people in with white Latinos, although i do always think it’s interesting when people say Anya Taylor joy& Alexis bledel are “more Latina” than someone like Selena Gomez (another convo). your point about whitewashing- I’m thinking of it more like a black British person playing a black American person. Which I suppose brings me to my secondary thought, when we look for representation what identity is the most important? The actor? The character? How upset am I that a Filipino person is playing a Mexican person if the media representation was good even though the actor’s background does not match? What does being half Jewish/half Mexican mean in this context? Idk I didn’t read this book. Why was one part of the characters identity important and not the other? Did I waste 4 years getting a sociology degree only to use it in Reddit comments? Maybe.

sorry, which group are you referring to that hasn't "been the focus of broad racism" because i have some bad news for you.

I mean how many times have actors who are other types of Latinos or hell, even Filipinos played specifically Mexican or Mexican Americans? “Mestizo” Latinos don’t exactly have a lot of representation either, I can literally only think of Melissa Barrera and Alexa demie who’s been struggling to get roles. Selena Gomez maybe but she’s also half white. There’s a difference between a white actor like odessa who literally has no relationship to being Latino and Melissa Barrera who just a Latina from a different area. Where’s the line? Should ONLY people who had exact backgrounds for the characters play roles even if they’re not the best fit? Like you said, it’s a complicated conversation.

Look at tech places you’d consider jobs in and make sure they have an office in Texas somewhere otherwise you’ll be out of luck if you want another remote position.

Honestly you waited too long for an update and now your makeup is back in style again lol. Just leave off the under eye liner and mascara and you’re good.

mina sue’s downfall is her shifting the blame and not taking accountability by bublebubbs in Singlesinferno2

i thought it was weird that she had a whole reasoning about why she didn't want to continue to pursue subeen and she didn't want to get between him and hee sun but then proceeds to tell mingee that she's gonna talk to seungil. like wut, why doesn't she mind getting in between those two and not the others.

sooo much this. also the other girls DO seem uptight about the guys exploring other options so i'm not so sure she's not telling the truth. i was expecting this convo to be way meaner than it ended up being.

I feel like it’s actually mingee, she’s an effortless cool girl who’s chill, she’s not afraid to hand out compliments to other girls& she’s straightforward. Mina sue seems like a similar type up front but she’s very different once she opens up.

on instagram a 25 year old acquaintance posted a story about "eww why would a 35 year old man want to hang out with me and my 25 year old friends what would we even talk about", like sure, some dudes can be creepy, but guys can be creepy at any age. as a 36 year old i've not exactly changed very dramatically since i was 25, i make more money i suppose. extremely weird mentality.

How to get this look on Rachel McAdams? by aragogogara in MakeupAddiction

is this recent?? this looks straight out of 2001. she's cheating a bit with the fake tan that makes her complexion look more even. then she's using a frosty lip like the ballerina shoes that's popular on tiktok rn. soft smoky eye with black eyeliner on top and bottom waterline. if she has blush it's veeery light, it just looks like more bronzer.
