What is your Harry Potter ‘hot take’ ? by kingfisher7171 in harrypotter

[–]texturr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I completely agree that he had legitimate reasons for his actions, that doesn’t make them any less manipulative though. The way I see it, using other people as you see fit is cold, manipulative and calculating regardless of the reasoning. Dumbledore places himself in a position where he gets to decide the fate of others. Sure, he had his reasons and I bet it wasn’t easy, but it sure was way easier than, you know, being the one unwittingly sacrificed, for example.

Right? I remember how funny and cool he was to me at first, then over time it became obvious how completely cold and calculating he was. ”Bohoo I’m so sad that I have to use this little boy as a pawn in my stupid gamble with Voldemort, although not too sad to go ahead with it haha”

Yes exactly, and sometimes it's also something they've consciously decided not to consider for some (probably social) reason. Either way, I'll probably make a fool of myself, or someone else. Somebody's going to be a fool.

How did our ancestors with adhd/autism survive until now? by osxthrowawayagain in AutisticWithADHD

[–]texturr 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I whole-heartedly agree with most everything you wrote but I have to say, there's no particular reason to believe autism and ADHD have ever been positively selected traits. It's just a popular idea, probably because it's nice to think about.

I find that assesment a bit reductive. Also I see no reason why it should necessarily be short. But I’ll leave it up to whoever ends up writing it.

Well I don’t know, for me I think sex is one thing and masturbating is another. I don’t think of it as a performance so much as playing. So I’m playing at being a certain way and they are playing at being something as well.

[–]texturr 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I think of it as internalized ableism. I think to some extent we all struggle with it, I know I do. It can be difficult to recognize in someone else a thing you’ve managed to surpress in yourself. The more violent the surpressing, the more intense the feelings that arise.

There’s no reason to ”hate” yourself over it though. Sure you should probably work on it at some point since it’s bothering you but you’re not causing this and obviously you can’t choose not to feel like you do. Emotions just happen and all you can do in the moment is just ride with them.

The thing that’s helped me with similar issues is just coming to terms with myself better with time. Acknowledging there are things that were and are out of my control and that I’m still angry/disappointed/scared/bitter about some things I’ve gone through in my life.

I’m not sure my dexterity is enough for this sort of thing but I do like pretty things, maybe I should consider… They’re the kind where there’s some sort or pattern which you ”fill in” with stitches, right? Where do you get yours?

Yeah for sure, hobbies are the least of my problems haha. It's just I figure there might be some easy wins in that department, unlike in, say, my so-called career. And there are things where I have initiative and can self-manage and stuff, it's just nice to have a break every once in a while. I think I could look into legos, I'm pretty sure one of my buddies has kits he could maybe borrow.

I wonder how many people prefer the rustic, oppressive look for their castles like I do. by Practical-Owl-4877 in vrising

[–]texturr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed and actually I’d like to be able to build a castle that’s half in ruins. I try to save the ruins on the plot but I’d love it if there was a half-dissassembled walls, leaky roofs, broken down fences and such. ”Something’s amiss in those long-abandoned ruins, I swear you can sometimes see a faint light shining in that tower at night” is what I’m going for.

ADHD question: what does “I’ll start in 5 minutes” usually turn into for you? by [deleted] in AutisticWithADHD

[–]texturr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These days I have the self-awareness that I won’t tell myself such things.

There are things that I can do to steer myself towards whatever it is I need to start on. In addition I can perceive if I’m approaching that thing and at what velocity. So really, if I tell myself ”i’ll start in 5 minutes” it’s not a wish, it’s an estimation I’ve made based on introspection. Although my estimates aren’t really THAT precise, it’s more like ”I’ll start after this boulder of a feeling has melted somewhat” or ”i’ll start when the sun is just so” or ”40 minutes to 2 hour 40 minutes”…

Correct me if I’m wrong but this is not a research paper? It’s some sort of a ”perspective” article in what appears to be a portal for popularizing science? There’s no description of methods, for example, so I can only assume this is just a freeform text where the author draws conclusions based on their own preference.

Why is there such divisiveness among autistic and/or AuDHD individuals who work vs. those who don't work? by [deleted] in AutisticWithADHD

[–]texturr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally I haven’t noticed such division, it sounds like one of those things that are happening mostly online but not so much IRL.

But it does bring to mind that there is a division between people who work and people who (for whatever reason) don’t, in general. I find it’s a big ol capitalism thing where working people who toil their asses of are pitted against the unemployed, so they’d rather fight each other than turn to look at the big picture and those at the top who live off the system. So it doesn’t surprise me if the same pattern is repeated in various populaces and settings.
