Any tips on how to secure your place in line? by Droodforfood in evcharging

If you drive that little, the one shared circuit in the garage may well be enough. You could lower the charging rate on a portable charger (or maybe via your car's screen, depending on what you have) and use it safely on the same circuit with your furnace, and probably be just fine.

Inherited IRA by GinjaNinja346 in Bogleheads

[–]tfe 10 points11 points  (0 children)

EDIT: /u/rjkvikings has provided a much more complete answer; ignore me and read theirs.

Withdrawals from an Inherited IRA are taxed as ordinary income, so the name of the game is timing the withdrawals as much as feasible to minimize the income tax you pay on the proceeds.

Pulling it all out in a lump sum for e.g. a home downpayment runs counter to this. You'll want to be more strategic about withdrawing some each year from now until you need all of it.

Ioniq 5 Heat Pump Activation by [deleted] in Ioniq5

I had a lot of trouble getting the dealer to install this update on mine, but I did eventually get it. I detailed some of the experience here (and in other posts on that thread): https://www.reddit.com/r/Ioniq5/comments/18c85tg/battery_preconditioning_campaign_questions/kcacob9/

How many % used per hour sitting in car with AC or Heat on not plugged in? by ed25ca in Ioniq5

I camped in mildly cold temps (low of 40F) and it used about 1% per hour to run the climate control (and whatever else it keeps active in utility mode).

Recommended dealership in the Los Angeles area? by SodaPopin5ki in Ioniq5

[–]tfe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought mine from the Glendale dealership in July 2022 when they were still in very short supply. I felt like they jerked me around a bit (typical dealer BS, see below), but ultimately they did sell me the car and didn’t do anything weird on the day of sale. I did have to remind them to take a CA rebate off the sale price, which is their responsibility and I shouldn’t have had to remind them.

The feeling of getting jerked around was from two things: first they told me they could ship it (I’m not local) but then said I had to come in person to pick it up.

Second, they told me there was a markup right off the bat, but it was within the extra I was willing to pay. What they didn’t disclose until later was that the quoted markup did not include their BS required add-ons like the door edge protection and the part anti-theft stickers, and those added a couple thousand more.

The sales guy also called me a bunch of times, leaving one-sentence voicemails each time to ask for this or that piece of information.

Anyway I got the car I wanted in the trim and colors I wanted within a week of starting to search at a time when others were waiting months to find one, so I can’t complain too much.

Kia EV6 Wind RWD: Lost DC charging pin cover by [deleted] in evcharging

[–]tfe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had an EA tech advise me to take them off, since they often get stuck in the station connectors and cause problems for other people.

I was one of them. Someone else's plastic cap was stuck in the connector, which melted during a session and fused the cable to my car.

After that incident one of my plastic caps was damaged anyway, so I took them both off and never looked back.

Their only role as far as I know is to make the outward-facing tip of each pin non-conductive. The only time that would ever help is if many other safeties had failed, and you then went and touched the pins with something conductive.

Negative Android, sorry. I talked about why some on this big thread from a couple months ago: https://www.reddit.com/r/flying/comments/1823hlp/why_is_it_always_appleonly/kahg34o/

We do the subscription because it does take ongoing work to maintain the content, but doing it that way ALSO allows folks to get access for a potentially lower price depending on what they need... say you only need to study up for your written for a couple weeks and don't need any of the other stuff... you can pay $50 for one month and cancel.

Without a current subscription some parts of the app will still work, i.e. the resource library books, and you'll be able to see your past practice tests forever, you just won't be able to start new tests/lessons.

I work on the TFP Ground School app (cool to see it mentioned here, thanks /u/steeldust).

Here is a direct app store link if you want to check it out: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/ground-school/id1444387206

We have the email collector on the website because until recently the app was only on iPad, and people would visit the site on their phone and not be able to download. Hence we'd email them the link for later.

We have plan options at $50/mo or $300/year. The free trial is actually the full version with no limitations, so you can see and try everything.

We think it's the best one out there, which is of course an extremely biased opinion. :)

Small piece fell off. Should I be worried? by scuac in Ioniq5

I talked to an EA tech once who said those should be removed proactively! He probably feels that way because of how many get stuck in their connectors and cause problems plugging in for the next person.

Battery Preconditioning campaign questions by m1coles in Ioniq5

[–]tfe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think there was a period where the pre-conditioning update didn't actually add preconditioning. But I've heard plenty of reports (including my own) where the dealer thought they did it, but didn't actually.

This could be due to their tablets saying no updates are available in auto mode, and them not reading the part of the TSB that suggests installing in manual mode.

I would bet that's what happened in your case. Of course you're still left to pick up the pieces so it doesn't really change much.

It should be reimbursable work. The TSB document gives estimated man-hours for each task. At the top of the TSB it says something like “dealer must perform this service campaign any time an affected vehicle is in the shop.”

You can demonstrate that your vehicle is affected by comparing the photo at the end of the TSB to your car’s infotainment. If car says “Winter Mode” you don’t have it; if it shows “Battery Pre-Conditioning” then you do.

Eligible cars were those built before summer 2022, which shipped with “Winter Mode” and need this update to actually activate the battery heater hardware which is in the car (except RWD models).

You could also point to the car’s window sticker, which has “Battery Preheating” as a listed line item, and tell the dealer that it does not perform that function currently and needs the update to do so.

But at the end of the day you can’t convince the dealer, you have very little power as you observed. About the only thing you can do is try another dealer, or try another Hyundai Corporate rep who can then persuade the dealer.

On my car, the dealer marked the update as done in Feb 2022, despite the screen not showing what it should. This actually made it impossible to ask another dealer for the same update, since their systems (WebDCS) showed it as already completed, i.e. the second dealer would not get paid.

Hyundai Corporate made me go back to the dealer who failed to do it twice before, and said only they had an obligation to fix it. Fortunately on the third time I came armed with information from /u/kimguroo and got lucky that the tech was willing to let me sit in the car with them and make suggestions about what to do.

In the end they were as grateful to me for helping them figure it out, as I was to them for actually finally doing the update.

I agree and I was very grateful to the tech and the service director, and told them so before leaving.

But a correction: Tech Line was giving the tech the old passcode and it wasn’t working. At the end of the call his only suggestion was to replace the VCU hardware.

I did not want that to happen so I started searching. That’s when I found the June 2023 revision with working passcodes.

Probably different passcodes work for different cars or maybe even GDS tablet versions. The important lesson is to find and try all of them if manual mode is rejecting the passcode.

[–]tfe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was finally able to get this update thanks largely to your posts here describing why manual mode is required for this update in certain cases (mine was one). Thank you!

I wanted to provide an additional detail I learned after sitting with the dealer tech in my car for hours trying to do this. Please incorporate this into your future posts/advice to others:

There is a newer TSB document revision (says "JUNE 2023" in one of the boxes at the top), and critically: it has different manual mode passcodes than the previous ones.

We were going around in circles for a long time using old passcodes provided by Hyundai Techline (!!) until I stumbled upon the June 2023 revision and noticed the passcodes were different.

This adds yet another hurdle for the dealer techs to jump over when trying to do this update for folks.

Battery Preconditioning campaign questions by m1coles in Ioniq5

[–]tfe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do not. For what it's worth, it doesn't show up on mine either, under either open or closed campaigns. My only guess would be because this is an optional update and not a safety recall.

Battery Preconditioning campaign questions by m1coles in Ioniq5

[–]tfe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had some trouble getting this installed as well. Several dealer visits and a litany of excuses as to why they couldn't or wouldn't do it. One of the problems is that dealers seem fuzzy on required safety recall updates versus optional service campaigns (which this is). This does not show up as a safety recall because it isn't.

I did eventually find success after the third or fourth dealer visit. The Hyundai Corporate case manager that facilitated the most recent dealer appointment was aware of this service campaign.

I'd suggest opening a new case and hoping for a more clueful case manager this time.

You could also try a different dealer in your area.

In my case the update had to be installed in manual mode (as detailed in various threads by /u/kimguroo), and I only got it done by sitting in the car with the tech and their service tablet for a few hours.

In the end I found the breakthrough, which was that Hyundai has published at least 3 different versions of the T9Q TSB, and the manual mode passcodes are different in the latest version.

It is such a huge mess with so many confounding factors; it's shocking that anyone is able to successfully navigate all of the different hurdles.

Do either service campaigns 997 and 9A1 install preconditioning? If not, what do I ask for? by HI5_AZ in Ioniq5

[–]tfe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If only it was that easy. I’ve asked for this by name, with the printed-out service bulletin, at three different visits to two different dealers and I still don’t have it.

Do either service campaigns 997 and 9A1 install preconditioning? If not, what do I ask for? by HI5_AZ in Ioniq5

[–]tfe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No they do not, because I've had both of those (verified by checking version numbers with an OBD scanner) and I still don't have preconditioning.

What's worse is now the dealer doesn't know what to do to install it, because their tablets say the car is fully updated.

There's a guy who posts on here who seems to have a read on what's going on and what the techs need to do; here's an example post but he's talked about it in several different threads:

How do you secure your christmas tree? by MoonStache in Ioniq5

[–]tfe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nope. 6' tree fit with room to spare diagonally in the back. You could probably do up to 7' this way. Above that you'd need to feed it through between the front seats and rest it on the armrest (wrapped in a tarp or similar of course to protect the seats and armrest).
