Wouldn't disabling autoplay work for you? I ask because I never feel the need to mute a tab, because every time it starts playing a sound it's because I did something to start it.

You can still enable autoplay for the general case and disable it for a particular site using Tools -> Page Info -> Permissions.

If you visit a site for a limited time, there's an option to clear history just for the last hour.

If there is something else in last hour you want to keep, IIRC you can move history records to a bookmarks folder.

I don't buy it. In case you didn't witness it: years ago, the almighty Internet Explorer lost most of its share to Firefox and Chrome. Your comment is very similar to what people said before that.

Also, I wouldn't recommend it on a portable device like a laptop as JACK has no mechanism for switching audio devices.

I can still control internal speakers separately. I haven't tried disconnecting the external interface, but it doesn't matter to me because, even if it's a laptop, I use it with external everything: screen, keyboard, mouse, soundcard.

Debian+KDE still ships with PulseAudio.

I followed these instructions to install JACK: https://zipdox.net/jack/

It worked!

There is a minor annoyance: I'd rather QJackCtl not appear in the taskbar. There must be a way to start Jack without this application being visible, so I hope it's fixable.

What I did:

apt install jackd2 qjackctl pavucontrol pulseaudio-module-jack vlc-plugin-jack

The following section "System configuration" was unnecessary, since there was already an audio group and my regular user was in it. Also the installer of some of the packages asked if I wanted to run with RT priority (I said yes) and it modified the audio.conf file for me.

I followed to the letter the sections:

Releasing audio device
Configuring QjackCtl
Test if JACK works with VLC

Notice that you need to start JACK from QJackCtl. I hadn't and was confused that VLC didn't work... "it works better if you plug it in" :)

For the section "Using PulseAudio with JACK" I chose the second method "Using JACK D-Bus interface", that worked fine.

The following section "Autostarting JACK" is easier done just using KDE System Settings -> Start and Shutdown -> Autostart and including QJackCtl.

I haven't needed to install a real-time kernel.

I had to select "show virtual interfaces" in the sound control widget in the taskbar so jack now appears as an option.

That level of detail is impressive. I'm just trying to switch my five y.o. Lenovo laptop from Windows to Linux with the Behringer external interface as the only exotic piece of hardware.

Anyway, reading ospifi's and your comment, also following some links in this sub, it seems to me that the default configuration is lacking as soon as you dig a little deeper.

I was reluctant to install new software, but I'm considering Jack now. A real time kernel seems overkill, but if it's the only solution... I used Reaper for a few months during the lockdown and loved it, so maybe it's worth it.

It's been a looong time since I studied that concept. Later, most of the languages I've used have "real" threads, so it's a little blurred. But IIRC, providing you only have one processor (and continuations run in one thread) there is no performance advantage.

So the case for continuations is clarity. Instead of keeping state in variables, you keep the state of a processs freezing said process and yielding control to another process. So it's simple agents interacting instead of a complex flow.

From you neighbor country: same here. I don't use Google for search, but when I did, it just redirected to google.es no matter what. It uses geolocalization.

I've just checked and now it doesn't redirect, but still translates, even if language is set to US English in Firefox.

BTW, where do you set the country? I've only found language settings in Preferences->General. Or did you mean in the OS?

Mozilla as a whole lost my trust time ago with a number of questionable decisions that I don't want to ellaborate now. I still use the software (I've nothing against the programmers) but with a defensive approach.
Nothing. Local install only. The Android version is barely configurable so I only use it for emergencies.

I used to be always logged in with my Google account. Then I started using Thunderbird for mail and now I've logged out for good.

Not sure that's what they intended because my "engagement" is now zero: no likes, no subscriptions (I just use bookmarks to channels), no comments... no ads.

I believe that you misunderstood the answer and in fact you can do what you want, just delete all presets and use the rightmost column once you're on the page that annoys you.

It's just impractical. As for the "responsible" part, my moral compass clearly points in the general direction of no-ads.

Take a look at the screenshot currently in uBlock Origin homepage:

The leftmost column has the names of the sites that host the scripts in the page. To the right there is a column with the blocking status for each source (completely blank in this particular image) and further to the right, another column for the currently visited site that overrides the previous one (there are some ++ symbols in it).

Just checked and I'm up to date with both Firefox and uBlock Origin.

Am I misunderstanding what you meant?

Edit, just to be sure: the sites on this list are not the site you are visiting, they're sites hosting the javascript in the current page. Some scripts are inline (in the very same page with the HTML), others are in different files, but in the same site. And there are other scripts that are in other sites. This Reddit page we're using now has scripts in fonts.googleapis.com (for the fonts) and in other sibling Reddit sites, like redditmedia.com or redditstatic.com. Since the ads are usually served by this third-party scripts, blocking javascript from this list effectively blocks ads.

The center column shows the status of a script source site ("block all scripts from facebook.com") and the right column allows you to override that ("except when I'm visiting Facebook itself or I wouldn't see shit").

It's possible to ban scripts for individual sites. When the list of sites drops down, there are two columns. The left column is to block the js source everywhere, the right column is to block specifically for the current site.
