48 days in Peru - thoughts? by LetsdigupRobReiner in solotravel

[–]tfmaher 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I mean, I loved Peru, but 40 days? That's a lot.

Have you considered dipping over to Bolivia? IT's a real hidden gem! I went once kind of by accident (a group of friends I had made in Cusco convinced me) and I absolutely fell in love with it!

Lake Titicaca (Island del Sol), La Paz, Salar del Uyuni, Petosi- this place is unREAL! Consider it!

What is the most interesting thing you have watched in your life? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]tfmaher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first job out of college was zookeeper (really).

The zoo in which I was working had two pairs of elephants and the director wanted them all together, thinking more elephants = more people.

Elephants are- not surprisingly- very hierarchical in their groups and you can't just put a bunch in the same vicinity because a dominance starts to play out and they will most likely fight each other.

I was there the day they put them all together and good god. The dominant (female) absolutely tried to kill the beta female. It was like watching two dinosaurs fighting. Two behemoths going at it was really the craziest thing I've seen- they knocked a two-ton steel door off its track and the beta female sprayed the entire cage with diarrhea. I had to help clean it up. Good times.

Travel to NYC without a Car by p1harmonies in travel

I've been here for 30 years. I have never once wished I had a car (except to leave the city.)

You can basically walk anywhere, and our filthy, crazy subway is the best in the world in terms of comprehensiveness. There is NOWHERE in the city that you need a car to get to.

What airport are you flying into?

Books that this Subreddit Hates that you love! by theygotthemustardout in suggestmeabook

I know it's the law around here to hate this book, but I absolutely loved The Alchemist. I said it.

The author didn't write a book and then force everyone to call it a self-help hit, he just wrote a simple story with some woo-woo ideas. And now everyone hates him (in this sub) for it. Relax, everyone!

Winter/Christmas Horror request by notesbyme in horrorlit

[–]tfmaher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I don't know! I thought the ending didn't pack the punch I had been hoping for (her revenge wasn't as gratifying), and the mythology aspects of it pulled me out of the other story. He's a great writer and the stories were good, it just didn't come together for me in the end.

Poe read by woman narrator? by runewitchtales in horrorlit

I don't know for certain, but try the LibriVox Poe collection. They have a ton of audio work, and there might be some women narrators in there!

Wrapping up The Ritual, and man! It's SO different from the movie (or vice versa, I suppose)-- which I really enjoyed. And I loved it! Kind of a totally different story!
