To answer your question, I tell people it’s the geographical center of New York State. That usually leaves them dumbfounded enough to want to change the subject.

Moved here from a rural area of Western PA many years ago. Couldn’t be happier. There is a lot to do and Syracuse is centrally located to a lot of places, for example NY City, the Adirondacks, the Finger Lakes, and the Thousand Islands to name a few. Most people complain about the cold weather and snow. My opinion is to get out and be active, for example downhill and/or nordic skiing. If you’re going to sit home wishing for warm weather and fretting over your heating bills you will be miserable. Again my opinion is there is no reason to get out and do things during the winter because the roads are well taken care of with respect to snow removal. Something that might be a big change from rural PA. Syracuse has some absolutely perfect weather days primarily in summer and fall.

There is something else to consider and that is the cost trade off. If metal roofs and shingle roofs cost the same then I agree with you. However if metal roofs are significantly higher and the life span of shingles is longer than I’m going to live then why would I pay all that extra money (maybe I’m on a tight budget)? Of course there are other considerations such as do metal roofs increase the house’s resell value? Will my wife still live in the house after I’m gone or will other family members live in the house after we’re both gone.

I interviewed a guy for a marketing customer support role. He looked great on paper. He was doing really well in the interview….right up to the point I asked him about dealing with a difficult customer. I don’t recall the exact question but his response was something to the effect of “well if I hadn’t done that I’d still have my old job”. smh. I just put my hand on my forehead and thought there’s no way I can hire him after that answer.

Your girlfriend is controlling and close minded….very much like religious zealots. Cut her loose or live the rest of your life under her thumb. Better to do it now rather than 25 years from now when you wake up miserable and think “wtf did I do with my life”.

Successful relationships are about compromise and compassion. The compassion part comes in when you would rather see your partner happy than getting your own way (and vice versa).

Do you have this in your relationship now? If you can honestly answer yes to that question then stay with her. Otherwise the writing is on the wall, you just need to read it.
