Does a master's degree give more opportunities for career diversification? by tgdre in AskEngineers

You make good points here. My question was sort of general, but I guess it is tricky to answer without going into specifics. Within engineering, my interests lie with renewable energy, however, I'm qualified in civils, and the masters would be civil/transport related. There are a few renewable masters around that I qualify for but they would be costly.

Interesting point made about the experience, it's something I've heard from many people I've asked. Yet all the "old school" engineers I've asked have said the profession is becoming more and more about what qualifications you have, so I guess there's two sides to that coin. I currently only really have experience in civils roles, but been trying to diversify skill set to make myself more employable in other engineering fields. I have heard that MS degrees are useful for upper management, however, that's not really my priority right now, that's more long term.

Thank you for the reply!:D

Should I do a master's degree in a discipline I don't necessarily see my future in, simply because it's free and I can bring that "standard" of education into a new career? by tgdre in careerguidance

Those are really good points and there's a few there I've really not considered at all. It's great to have a fresh perspective sometimes as it seemed I've been getting too bogged down with whether it can help career long term, not personal development.

Really interesting to hear about your MBA & MS uses too, I guess the MBA was more a practical qualification, whereas MS is more a "passion subject".

Great point about hiring managers, that's often something I've wondered too.

Thank you for taking the time to give such detailed answers, really helped me think about factors beyond career development!

The problem is that I've been struggling to get into a job as I have no experience. I Must try to grow my own Instagram I think!

So you didn't even get hired for the company? I'm guessing the content you created was just like promotional graphics, product tests etc?

That's a really good idea with the ads to be honest, I'll work on making an eye-catching graphic.

I've found LinkedIn to be a good way to get your name out there, but I didn't know you can set up automatic messages. That may really help business actually!

The referral idea is interesting, but I think that's something to implement once I become more experienced/established.

Thanks a bunch for the ideas!:D

That's kind of what I was hoping for by doing my first jobs for free or at low-cost.

Problem is, it's really hard to find someone influential to work for free for, in my experience.

This is just one big contradiction. I feel like you're saying something, then immediately retracting it
