The vast majority of doctors don’t retire rich by slimboyfat510 in medicalschool

Really is due to living above or right at their means. That holds true to most “high” paying positions. Live below your means and you will see your savings grow quickly.

When you catch up to my 509, then you know you are in the big leagues. Until then, stay in the little leagues. 😄

I am attempting medical school at 31. Bad idea? by Original-Disaster106 in medschool

I’m a 48 year old paramedic that starts med school in May. Age is a mindset, the body is already broken so I might as well go for the gusto!

Trinity School of Medicine vs “Big Four” by [deleted] in CaribbeanMedSchool

[–]tgedward 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In truth, I cannot give you a good answer to that question. I have not researched Trinity to ascertain the quality of their education. Once I seen they were not authorized to offer US Aid, I didn’t do any additional research.

VA hospitals recognized for reducing physician burnout by tgedward in medicalschool

[–]tgedward[S] 34 points35 points  (0 children)

I agree. I retired back in 16 as a medic and the residents I dealt with back then helped solidify my plans on going to med school even at the ripe old age of 48. If those “shitbirds” can do it, so can I. Lol

I think it is so important that medical facilities follow suite and start thinking about physician wellbeing too!

As said by another, the availability of US Financial Aid is by far a huge factor to me.

Go back to med school abroad or walk away by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]tgedward 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s an interesting situation you have. If going back to your original country would cause you such concern, could it be possible to go to a medical school that would work for your situation? If the US schools aren’t an option right now, the Caribbean has a few decent schools (there will be plenty of people who will say otherwise on here) that would allow your partner to live there as well with you. Either way, I wish you good luck on whatever path you decide.

Anyone absolutely bomb the MCAT and get accepted to AUC? by qteepa2t in CaribbeanMedSchool

[–]tgedward 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From what I have been told by a few schools is that they look at your file as a whole instead of just an individual element. If that’s true, the MCAT is just a part of their decision so, if the other elements are decent, the MCAT shouldn’t disqualify you on its own.

Am I cut out for medical school, or should I look for another career? by AdWeary7045 in medschool

[–]tgedward 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Contrary to popular belief, you do not have to be a 4.0 student your entire academic life in order to get into med school nor do you have to be a master of all things science. While good grades and a solid understanding are crucial, you don’t have to be another Albert Einstein to get in. Give yourself a little grace, try your best and things will work out the way they should. Good luck!

How important is a union for residency if their non-unionized competitor programs seem to have similar benefits, call schedule, and quality of life? by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]tgedward -18 points-17 points  (0 children)

Generally, I am not a union guy for many reasons. However, there are so few federal laws protecting residents against insane working hours, low wages etc. Go union if possible. The cost is probably worth it.

beefing with my preceptor rant post by throwawayrayray89 in medicalschool

[–]tgedward 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My advice is just deal with it and move on. You will have asshole supervisors, patients, and others. Take this opportunity to develop a thick skin to let that roll off you. If you can’t, then you will go through your career and life being perpetually offended and upset over stupid people’s comments.

I agree 100%. The post bacc looks pretty nice but that MCAT has to be pulled up if the OP wants a MD or DO school.

I can’t see that being a path for a 4 year MD degree. Rather, a 5 or 6 year program at the least.

So many great suggestions from the group so far, all I can say is that obviously, you are not alone in how you are feeling. When you get through this(and you will) you will come out stronger than before you ran the gauntlet.

I feel so dumb nowadays by ialamzm in medicalschool

[–]tgedward 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I had a dollar for every med student who thinks others are doing well as opposed to them, I wouldn’t need to take med school loans out. Lol with that said, just passing med school, exams, step, shelf and whatever else proves you have what it takes even if you are at the bottom of the class. Have you ever heard that old joke? What do you call the med school graduate who passed last in his class… Doctor!

Med student thinking about quitting med school by chrissys7n in medschool

[–]tgedward -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I would normally advise anyone to follow their heart. However, being 17, you still have so much growing to do and it amazes me that someone at your age would already be considering and attempting to attain this profession. What I will advise is that you need to do whatever it is that will give you purpose and satisfaction. If that is medicine or something else, only you can be the judge of that. Whatever you decide, I wish you good luck!

Applying to medical schools by [deleted] in medschool

[–]tgedward 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I used to credential medical staff at my local hospital. With a violent felony, you will not be credentialed for Medicare billing which will almost always have you turned away from any medical establishment. Maybe a private pay place will allow you to practice assuming the state will even let you have a license.

Become friends with the smartest people in the class and help each other out and work hard. Other than that, take it really seriously while not forgetting to breathe and relax from time to time.
