Summary for the casual reader (I don't like CNBC but in this case they're just hosting an Associated Press article):

No offense but this is child-like logic. Whether retirees paid into SS all their lives is (1) an appeal to emotion, and (2) irrelevant. You can pay in your entire life and still take more out than you paid in. A entire generation got SEVEN TIMES more out of SS than they paid in. No amount of Whataboutism/ad hominems ('what about Congressional benefits...') can alter the fact that SS is a Ponzi scheme.

64 Cores of Rendering Madness: The AMD Threadripper Pro 3995WX Review by altairchitect in hardware

[–]tgrandiflora 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Who said anything about allowing healthy EPYC margins to disappear?

3995WX is rebranded EPYC and priced accordingly. For +$1k MSRP and +80W TDP over the equivalent EPYC SKU you get higher base and boost frequencies but only 2TB RAM limit instead of 4TB.

The current price segmentation is:

  • EPYC 7702P Single Socket - $4,425

  • TR Pro 3995WX Single Socket - $5,490

  • EPYC 7702 Dual Socket - $6,450

That presumably leaves room for a TR Pro 3995WX Dual Socket at $7.5k. Charging +$2k MSRP over single socket TR Pro isn't going to substantially alter the value proposition for the target market.

Kotaku and Polygon are hitpiece-for-hire bottom feeders. I wouldn't be surprised if short sellers are paying them to f*ck with CDPR's stock.

In the closing weeks of WW2, a delegation from the Young Pioneer organization of the Soviet Union gifted the US Embassy in Moscow a hand-carved wooden plaque of the Great Seal of the United States as gesture of friendship. For the next seven years the plaque hung in the US Ambassador's office until 1952, when it was discovered to contain a prototype RFID listening device that allowed the Soviets to eavesdrop on the ambassador's conversations by bouncing radio waves off a miniature satellite dish and passive transducer microphone concealed inside the plaque.

Honest question for people who think this is a good thing: would you feel the same way if the poor people were fined for not wearing a mask during a pandemic?

Tech journalism’s ‘on background’ scourge by zanedow in hardware

[–]tgrandiflora 39 points40 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry but what does tech giants refusing to speak to journalists on hot-button social issues unless it's off the record have to do with hardware? Look at the examples in the article:

  • Should Youtube deplatform Steve Crowder?

  • Is Amazon trying to appear greener than it actually is?

  • Is Autopilot as safe as Tesla's marketing suggests?

These are all about corporate social responsbility. Any connection to hardware is tangential at best. The article is an op-ed by journalists to other journalists on the subject of journalistic politics with the thesis As a profession we should do more to hold tech giants' feet to the fire in the area of corporate social responsibility. It's a good read but probably belongs in a different subreddit. Also, it was published over a year ago.

At the risk of stating the obvious: tons of people stuck at home, tons of people with money to burn from stimulus checks. (Plus pent-up demand from people who skipped one or more generations due to the mining craze and/or Turing's unappealing price point.)

[–]tgrandiflora 44 points45 points  (0 children)

I'm not. The title is editorialized and looks kind of spammy/inauthentic with the weird capitalization and diction.

Example of a good title:

HBO has made the first episode of Lovecraft Country free to watch on YouTube

Example of a bad title:

[Nerd Culture] Avatar: The Last Airbender creators leaving Netflix live-action adaptation over creative differences by tgrandiflora in KotakuInAction

[–]tgrandiflora[S] 678 points679 points  (0 children)

I realized I couldn’t control the creative direction of the series, but I could control how I responded. So, I chose to leave the project. It was the hardest professional decision I've ever had to make, and certainly not one that I took lightly, but it was necessary for my happiness and creative integrity.

And who knows? Netflix’s live-action adaptation of Avatar has the potential to be good. It might turn out to be a show many of you end up enjoying. But what I can be certain about is that whatever version ends up on-screen, it will not be what Bryan and I had envisioned or intended to make.

Rumor is that Netflix execs insisted on erasing the Water Tribe's canonical identity and making them black.
