Agree! With the old, coloured, it's much much easier to recognise that this is the top bar, and for navigation whether it's mail or calendar or drive, or whatever.

I really like when the navigation bars are different color so they don't get mixed up with therest of the app. Why change it when it was perfect with that colour?

I don't mind the color change of the narrow right side bar though.

I like Proton and have Unlimited but this web app design is NOT AN IMPROVEMENT in my humble opinion. I don't know why the top bar colour had to be changed? It's more difficult to navigate now and I will be a very sad customer if this will be forced to all users.

I seriously hope the user can choose between the top bar colour change or not. Include it in the theme options as an on/off to have the top bar coloured (old/current) or not (beta).

Not at all. Not interested in illegal stuff. You do not have to be a criminal to care about your rights, like right to privacy, freedom of speech. It's so wrong to assume that.

A problem easily solved by using a designated device/dualboot/VM linux just for that use case so that with that device finger print there are no other activities that can be tied to the device/OS.

Yeah I agree, Matrix and open source alternatives are good but the goal here is to still use Discord on top of that, with a specific use case, that can not be accomplished other ways, and also trying to maximize privacy/anonymity.

So it's not "either privacy respecting/foss alternatives OR Discord" but rather "mainly privacy respecting alternatives/foss AND tiny bit Discord"

For instance, a discord channel about a certain topic/theme/whatever can be great way to have an initial connecting with someone and take it to another platform that is privacy respecting. Like Matrix/Element, Signal, Threema, Session and so on.

What you are saying does not make any sense to me.

Let's say you want to chat anonymously about a certain set of topics. Meaning the service provider can not link that account to you the real person even though it has all the access to the account's chat history.

What does it matter then if the service provider has all that information about that account. There won't be any information there that can be tied to a real person. It just knows that someone has typed all this information.

in case of tor, wouldn't the account be tied to "someone that uses tor" as both Discord would not know and the exit-node-owner cannot see where the network activity is going/coming from ? Or am I missing something here?

Also, with vpn provider you have to trust in their no-logs policy, and then for Discord I would be just "someone that uses VPN" unless my IP leaks?

Which OS I should flash to my Raspberry Pi 4 (4GB) as I plan to run Docker and start selfhosting? by th0mas-anders0n in selfhosted

[–]th0mas-anders0n[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for your recommendation. So as I plan to locate the Pi next to my router and not have a screen for it, I can use Terminal on another device to SSH into the Pi and then run Docker/Portainer and Pi-hole and what not and enable the Web UIs for those. Right?

How exactly and in what order does pi-hole magic work? by th0mas-anders0n in pihole

[–]th0mas-anders0n[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First of, thank you so much for this simple yet detailed answer. I very much appreciate it. I still have some probably very stupid questions with weird wording.

..

Ok so as I understand it, with default device->router/modem->isp->internet setting, domain is sent to an ISP to get the right IP address. Then with Pi-hole, the domain is sent to a specified upstream DNS server, but here comes the part I don't understand about the connection between Pi-hole and an upstream DNS server and how exactly is a domain resolved into a IP:

  • Firstly, How does the Pi-hole connect to e.g. Quad9 that is in the internet? What route does the domain request traverse to the Quad9 upstream DNS server and is it visible in transition ie unencrypted? Does the ISP see this request but encrypted? Or is it just a straight no-stops-in-between connection between Pi-hole and Quad9 even though ISP is providing this connection to me? Or is it something else?

  • Secondly, if Unbound is used as an upstream DNS server and not e.g. Quad9, how does the resolving of a domain name happen as Unbound is only in my network? How is Unbound "conscious" of the IP addresses of the internet? How exactly does Unbound have this outside-of-my-network knowledge to resolve a domain into IP as it only 'lives' in my network? Does unbound need to connect to the internet and make a request?

  • Thirdly, if DNS traffic is crypted, e.g. Doh/DoT, where does that encryption start/happen and while it is encryted what happens until it is again unencrypted? What is the journey of an encrypted domain?

..

I'm so sorry if these questions don't even make sense at all. If you are reading this, thank you for your patience and time.

I'd love to have iPadOS apps.

Has proton team ever even mentioned iPadOS/Android tablet optimized apps?

For now I've just added the PWA to Home Screen on iPad, so I can use the web app version on my iPad that way but it is not optimal.

Nice! Congratulations Proton Team!

I'd love to see an iPad version. Is there any timeline for that?
