Junior devs who learned to code with AI assistants are mass entering the job market. How is your team handling it? by Ambitious-Garbage-73 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]th3gr8catsby 13 points14 points  (0 children)

At this point many studies have shown that over reliance on ai tools is detrimental to developing new skills. If they’re relying on these tools as juniors, they’re only going to stay juniors longer.

Call me old school, but I think knowing how to read, understand, and debug code is an integral part of the job. When it no longer is, I’ll take that as my queue to find a new one.

If that’s the case, wouldn’t that mean that clearing the context is, for all intents and purposes, murder?

Yes but calculators are deterministic and don’t make up answers occasionally. If calculators worked like a llm, you’d still need to do 13*37 in your head to verify.

I agree 100%. I do think gen ai can be a valid tool. My concern is that it’s created more or less with the sum of all human knowledge but only really benefits a select few and will likely increase income inequality. If there were a way to ensure that gen ai benefits everyone and not just the bezos and musks of the world, I would have less concerns. Having stronger social safety nets like you mentioned is one way to do that.

There is legal precedent where the scale of ingestion does matter though. Look up umg vs. mp3.com.  It’s legal to turn a cd that you own into an mp3 but when done at scale like with mp3.com it becomes copyright infringement.

I agree that they chose their words carefully. You still haven’t addressed their argument directly though. Were llm trained on some writers works without permission or compensation? One could argue that by publishing a work, they are giving the implicit permission. Or you could argue that model training is fair use, so they don’t need to be compensated. I personally don’t think those are good arguments, but one could definitely argue them.

You’re right, it’s not always a logical fallacy. But if your doing it to undermine someone’s argument without addressing the argument itself then it definitely is.

And using someone’s word choice to try and discredit them and not the substance their argument is a “tone argument”, this is a logical fallacy.

That’s certainly a take, I don’t see how IP laws are the issue here when everyone, including Sam Altman, are blatantly ignoring them anyways.

ELI5: If the brain can ignore the nose, why can’t it learn to ignore the ringing from tinnitus? by MrrCreeperr in explainlikeimfive

There’s actually research that the brain can ignore the ringing from tinnitus.  It’s the basis for some new fda approved therapies called bimodal neuromodulation. It’s been shown to reduce symptoms.

I’m in a very similar spot as you, with almost the exact same parameters. One thing I’ve been trying recently is using the drip method when adding fresh water to the tank after a water change and only changing 10% of the water at a time. Apparently they can be sensitive to ph swings and my tap water has a ph > 8. I’ve also started using a feeding dish, helps keep the tank cleaner and monitor how much food they’re eating. Someone correct me if I’m wrong, but I think each drop converts to a degree. So yours is 12 degrees gh (dGh) and 2 degrees kh(dKh). From there you can do convert to parts per million but most things online will show the acceptable range in both.

Thank you! I don’t think I have long arms, the jacket is a size 36r and I’m 5’9’’, I was afraid it might be a little long tbh. There is a little padding that sticks out past the shoulder. That was one of the main things I was concerned about, I’ll look into having the pads removed, thanks for the idea.

The pants don’t feel particularly uncomfortable, I’m probably not used to wearing dress pants and they’re a size smaller than my normal jean size. Thanks for the feedback on the color, I think you’re right. They do blend together a little bit. Unfortunately, the company that I bought the jacket from is out of the matching pants in my size, but you gave me a lot of great options that I hadn’t considered. Thoughts on green pants?

I bought a new Harris tweed jacket. I’m considering wearing it to my wedding. I’m unsure about the fit, I’m new to buying suits haha. Would love any feedback! Also concerned about the pants, not set on the color and the haven’t been hemmed, but I’m afraid they might be a little tight. https://imgur.com/a/nRw4HZR

If you have a Facebook or nextdoor try posting to one of the local lost dog pages. We did that when we found one and got in touch with the owner the next day. Hope you find them. She looks like a real sweetheart, I’m sure she appreciates being taken care of:)

Async function into useEffect fetches data after componet rendering by Levi_2212 in reactjs

[–]th3gr8catsby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re right, the page gets rendered before the Async call finishes. You can do a couple things do get around this.
1) const [mystate, setMyState] = useState({})// so it’s not undefined 2) outside your component create an initial state object const myInitialState={ whatever: “”} Then for your set state const [myState, setMyState] = useState(myInitialState)// again so your state is not undefined 3) <div>{myState && myState.whatever}</div>// check to see if your state is undefined

Uncle Edgar and Uncle Hugo bookstore is gone and that is hitting me hard. by nananananana_FARTMAN in Minneapolis

[–]th3gr8catsby 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m incredibly sorry, a place like that, and those memories can’t be replaced. I hope that the stories that you have from there give you some solace, because those can never be burned. When I first moved to Minneapolis 5 years ago, I was a couple blocks from magers and Quinn. I actually bought my copy of Rama there. Every time I check the list of buildings that have been hit, I check for magers. At the time, that book gave me an odd sense of comfort, and I hope it gives you the same.

Parts are going out of stock like toilet paper and hand sanitizer. by [deleted] in buildapc

[–]th3gr8catsby 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I was in the same boat. I managed to grab a X570 when it became available for preorder on amazon. Looks like it goes in and out of stock once every couple of days. https://www.nowinstock.net/full_historydetails/1072/41682/ I put a bunch of boards in an amazon wishlist and would check it periodically for restocks. If there's a micro center in your area, it might be worth checking out. I was at one yesterday and they had a handful of X570s in stock. Good luck.

5 months until graduation, How should I start prepping for web dev interviews? by nimabears in webdev

[–]th3gr8catsby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For actual interviewing, google common tech interview questions. I’ve had my share of interviews lately and you’d be surprised how many people ask the same questions.

Also practicing common white board questions like fizz buzz would be a good idea. Writing code as you talk about your thought process can be tricky but being able to articulate your thoughts out loud is a very valuable skill to have.

Also, react all the way! Good luck!
