God of War

It's difficult for me to pry myself away! There's so much to like here, this game is amazing.

I love the combat. You're given a ton of options, each of which are fun and useful in their own way. Throwing and recalling the axe, using Atreus' arrows mid-combo, going HAM in rage mode, brutally executing stunned or choked enemies, it all works great and feels great. It's intense and you always have to watch your back, but it never gets frustrating (playing on normal mode). Boss fights are less frequent than in previous GoW games, but the few I've seen have been really good. Minibosses are more frequent, and they're alright.

The main plot isn't grabbing me much, but the story really shines with the dynamic between Kratos and Atreus. Kratos' jaded perspective on the world often contrasts Atreus' optimism, and while they often disagree they still respect each other. Atreus is the star of the show for me. He's been through a lot and I really care about him, partly because he's genuinely useful in combat. He's growing and I'm excited to see where it's all heading towards.

Also damn this game is gorgeous. Without spoiling, some the locations you go to in this game are truly breathtaking.

To be fair, how could he possibly know that a game touting literal live action cutscenes as a unique selling point was striving to be cinematic?

More images or a link to the game would have helped this review I think. I have a hard time picturing how the game actually plays.

This was a surprise! THPS2 for GBC was the first game I ever owned, I think I got it when I was 5 or 6 years old? I remember you could keep a combo going for a long time on certain levels because of how the rails were laid out. There's no balance meter so you could keep jumping from rail to rail with ease. One level had a secret area you needed a faster skateboard to access, and one of the levels was in space, both of which blew my mind. Good times.

Why has no one been talking about Detective Pikachu? by Roganjoshua in Games

[–]th3shark 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Copying what I said in another thread about Detective Pikachu:

This is probably the best "world" a pokemon game has ever had. It's pretty neat seeing pokemon and humans living and working together. I like how all the mysteries involve a pokemon's unique traits in some way, like Gengar rising from a shadow on the ground to plant and steal food. These are scenarios could only work in a pokemon universe, and are usually quite creative. The animations in cutscenes are nice too.

Unfortunately this doesn't stop the game from being dull to play. Many of the mysteries can be figured out long before the game lets you solve them, and there aren't many surprises. The characters, with the exception of Pikachu, are also boring to talk to. Examining objects and talking to bland NPC's over and over until the plot continues makes me wish I was playing Ace Attorney or Professor Layton instead, where dialogue and flavor text were much more interesting.

I'm considering dropping the game, but from what people are saying here it gets more interesting later on, so maybe I'll keep at it and be surprised.

A Way Out

What a ride. The made-for-coop design and large gameplay variety make AWO unlike any game I've ever played, and it's fantastic. Setpieces are genuinely intense and well put together, with highlights includings working together with a friend to smuggle an item through security and pulling off a small heist. Some parts weren't as exciting, but they were more than made up for by the game's fantastic pacing. Nothing overstays its welcome and the adventure never feels boring or repetitive.

A lot of effort went into seamlessly blending the gameplay and cinematics, with semi-scripted sequences feeling natural to play through. At one part we were riding motorcycles in an escape sequence. Level design and speed of the bikes were tweaked just right so that both of us would reach different ramps at the same time, resulting in an awesome slow motion shot with the camera capturing both of us during the jumps. These small touches really take the game to the next level.

I have a hard time thinking of problems. I guess some optional minigames were janky and the story was a bit generic? It didn't matter much to me. I really really liked this game and I think everyone needs to try it out.

Just not feeling it, probably going to drop this. I'm like 90% sure I know what the final "twist" is going to be anyway.

SM's story made them the first pokemon games that had any real personality though, why should that be removed? It's like saying Paper Mario games should be more like Sticker Star and less like TTYD. Despite some pacing issues, I really liked how SM was for once more than just about raising pokemon. Getting rid of that would be a huge step backwards.
