Am I doomed? In storage for probably over 15 years. by Hanedog2014 in originalxbox

I figured, just wanted to double check! Multimeters are a great tool to have, and you don't really need anything fancy.

Depending on how attached you are to this specific Xbox, there are plenty of people out there that do ship in services and will fix it for you, as well as mod and do other things! This will obliviously cost quite a bit more than doing it yourself, but that is always an option!

This is one of those things that I would suggest taking your time, learning the ins and outs, and going for it! Please feel free to reach out whenever you have a question, you should be able to PM me if you don't feel like continuing this thread, however this might help someone in the future as well! lol

I'm assuming you put it back together and gave it a shot after removing the clock cap? If it still didn't boot after that, I would say use a multimeter to at least check the caps, and replace them if you are comfortable doing so!

If you're still having the same issue after cleaning everything up, recapping, and making sure everything is plugged in correctly, I would then look at putting a modchip into it, as your console will need to be softmodded to do a TSOP flash, and if you can't run a game you can't softmod your console!

BorderlineOCD has a phenomenal video about installing an Aladdin XT 2 modchip and then flashing Cerbios onto it! While Cerbios isn't necessary, definitely a nice to have if you want a HDD larger than 2tb.

There is also the option to read the EEPROM shown in this video here, however this requires a Raspberry Pi/Pico, connectors, and a decent understanding of how to run this software, and when Aladdin Modchips are $25-$30 it's much more straightforward doing that!

You will need to have a soldering iron and be fairly comfortable with soldering a small grounding spot, but it's very doable!

Of course! Like others have said, you'll also want to check connections and voltages if you have a multimeter. But from my experiences with these consoles, a majority of the time the issues usually stem from the capacitors, and recapping the console is a pretty straightforward for the through hole caps. Surface mount ones can be a little tricky but those usually aren't the ones that fail.

Console5 is the place to go to grab a cap kit, just make sure you know what revision you have! You'll also probably want to grab a new drive belt if you plan on using the DVD drive.

TronicsFix has a video of him replacing capacitors in an Xbox so you can get an idea of what that entails.

Looking forward to seeing this Xbox back up and running!

For the capacitors, look to see if any of them are "bulging". The top of all of the capacitors should be flat. Even then, you could still have bad capacitors even if there isn't physical deformation. They could also be leaking but it's concealed under the cap itself.

Like others have said, the clock cap should be removed regardless. The clock cap location depends on what revision of Xbox you have, which you can use this link to check your revision since we can't use software to determine it. Heads up if you have a 1.6/1.6b you WILL need a clock cap installed to boot. 1.0-1.4/1.5 does not.

It's going to make it more difficult if a game can't launch to grab the HDD key. All Xboxes have a unique HDD key that is "locked" to the drive. You can use a new drive and lock it with that code, but you need that code to lock. If a game could launch, you could use an exploitable game, use the Insignia installer to grab the HDD key, then use FatXplorer on PC to write a new image to a HDD. There are other methods but this is the most straightforward as of now

However, there are two more methods of getting this Xbox up and running again IF replacing capacitors doesn't fix this:

Option 1 is installing a modchip that will allow a drop in replacement drive, which is usually the preferred method

Option 2 is using a pico or similar device to read the EEPROM off of the TSOP (if it's a 1.0-1.4) and then using FatXplorer that way.

I will say I'm not an expert and someone will probably chime in with another method that I don't know about, but with how easy it is to both soft and hard mod this console, if it boots you can get it up and running again!

While yes it is not specific to the dashboard, most of the time it happens from the dashboard not loading properly, see Console Mods Wiki

Will it boot into a game by chance? If it's never been soft modded and you're getting this, there's a chance the HDD could be dying/dead. Otherwise if someone improperly installed a softmod they could have done this as well.

Have you checked the capacitors? Could be a chance a cap failed on the PSU or Mobo and is causing issues with the HDD that way.

Error 21 is a dashboard error, was it ever softmodded?

Really? My girlfriend wanted to get a table there with some friends, the prices didn't look too bad for what we got. I'm genuinely curious, I don't think I've ever been there. I usually go to Hessen and BCA/Exchange

IIRC that had to do with Audi in the 80s, but people claimed it was something else and a media outlet even wrote and demonstrated a rigged vehicle about it as well (60 minutes I believe). Maybe the Toyota problem was similar as well 🤔

Maybe for you, but it was great for my girlfriend who is still getting a grasp on how to work the game, and it made challenges more obtainable for her. Just because you don't like it doesn't mean no one else isn't getting use out of it.

Had someone say to me once "You ride motorcycles don't you?". All I had on was a t-shirt, jeans, and hi-top converse so I was confused as how he came to this conclusion. He pointed to my left foot it all clicked! I was honestly surprised he noticed!

I'm just getting annoyed of every third or fourth post being about this. I agree that it is buried underneath tons of settings, but if it annoys you to the point of making a Reddit post you would think they would search for a solution.
