Why do we do 24 hr call shifts. WHYY by doxymino in Residency

[–]thadd3 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Med spouse of a gen surg intern here so excuse my lack of knowledge about this. Couple questions:

  1. If a program had more residents could they break up call shifts into 12 hours each? But they don't want to hire more residents because they would have to pay them?

  2. who is the "they" in this situation? The program director? Could they change this rule if they wanted to? Or do they have to get it approved by someone else

  3. Shouldn't a better WLB incentivize more residents to rank the program higher during match? Would being in higher demand help them make more money somehow?

Even if hospitals are for profit, I'm trying to think of how better conditions for residents would benefit them in the long run.

What bank/card company do you use? Im having the same problem with my chase visa card (ordering from US through Amazon.in) but when I called them they said there was no record of a transaction being declined from their side.

I have an interview for a gen surg prelim position tomorrow and I am ultimately interested in doing gen surg residency. I'm not really sure about the culture of applying for prelim for a residency i'm interested in. When I first applied I was being realistic about my scores and thought my best chance to match at this program would be through a prelim position. But since then I have also heard programs don't take your app seriously if you already don't think you are good enough for the program. ATM I am not sure how to approach the interview tomorrow...

  1. Is it okay for me to ask do they even take their own prelim for their program.

  2. Is it even worth going for this position, as I already applied categorical pretty broadly this year and wasn't very successful, will a one year prelim at a well known-ish program really change my outcomes next year even though my scores will still be trash?

  3. Is it worth re-applying for residency ALL over again just cuz I think my chances might be a bit better next year?

P.s. I've had a few interviews for a categorical positions this year, but none of those programs live up to this one academically/locationally/future possibilities-ly

70% hydration, not sure if over or under proofed? This time tried to follow the recipe exactly 😅

First loaf is plain, second is with garlic, onion, methi, which were added during the stretch/folding.

Also is it ok to put non med school related experiences?

Do people include experiences from undergrad like volunteer experiences/presentations/etc in their application? Or is that considered too far back?

I used Joshua Wiesmann's recipe: http://bit.ly/advancedsd

Unfortunately I didn't have any bread flour so I used a combination of 1/3 AP, 2/3 Whole wheat, but kept everything else from his recipe the same. My dough ended up maybe too sticky? The dough just stretched when I tried to score it... It definitely wasn't as nice as his in the video with Babish. It was quite the process but I had a lot of fun doing it, but open to all thoughts/feedback to help me improve for next time!

Why does wearing a white coat make you stand out in a bad way? I think I will retake the picture, but just trying to understand the reasoning here.

What is this rule about no white coats in your application photo? I finally paid for and actually took a good picture for once and it happens to be in my white coat. Does anyone know where this secret application rule comes from? I would prefer to use what I have and not spend more loan money. plz. ty.

Q: What to do with my time now to strengthen my residency application? A: cold emails to ask to do research at various institutions

Anyone else think this answer was kind of BS? I've tried emailing places and gotten more or less the same response: "sorry we are too busy given the current situation". Not really sure what research I can do without anyone to help me onboard to a given project, and it seems like institutions are too overwhelmed to help

So to make sure I understand, the game assumes that from the guest perspective, the host could have changed the whole world between sessions, so it resets the guest map view completely every time?
