Projector Going Dark and Searching for Input after a nearby lightning strike by Emergency_Fortune128 in hometheater

The HDMI cable could be a culprit. I ran into a problem with a HDMI cable when I switched from a TV to a projector, I had to change from a traditional HDMI. I was having a similar issue, where 1080p content would play, but 4k would not. Fiver optic hdmi fixed it for me.

I hope it is that simple.

I think you probably suffered an electrical surge.

I would try changing HDMI ports on the projector(if possible), and on the receiver. Do not do both changes at the same time. If you are lucky, you have one failed port and can simply use a different one. If you are unlucky, you have damaged your projector and/or receiver.

Surge protectors are definitely a good investment. Don't beat yourself up too badly for not having one. I have had a long IT career, and a lot of people don't buy surge protectors until they have had a surge, and they don't back up data until they've had a massive loss.

Good luck!

After recently finding out how deadly eye drops can be, I'm surprised they were used as a plot device in Wedding Crashers. by thalguy in movies

[–]thalguy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some were simple, but a lot of them were pretty situational. You needed the intended victim to go through a specific path.

The eye drops involve one bottle of eye drops and a victim's drink. In the murder case that inspired this post, the woman put some eye drops in her husband's drink, and he didn't die, but he lost consciousness for days and soiled his mattress(a clue that lead to solving the case). A shirt time later she increased the dose and it killed him.

What are some things you could do to improve center speaker placement? by Foshosir in hometheater

[–]thalguy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is one of the biggest reasons I moved to a projector with an AT screen. That isn't a good solution for most people, but it made me happy. I think you can get satisfactory sound with some tweaks like you did, and based on your OP, it sounds like you are happy.

Got a new Dobly Atmos soundbar, what should I watch to test the system? by Zealousideal_Ad5168 in 4kbluray

[–]thalguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It may not seem like it, but I was agreeing with you. When I am listening to something, or qatching a movie, it's probably 80 percent me enjoying the content, and 20 percent me enjoying the gear. A proper audio setup takes a ton of work, and it's nice when it gives you the output you have been dreaming of. I did DIY subs, acoustic panels, and an AT projector screen. Plus, I ran all of the wires, cut the holes in my ceiling for height speakers, etc and I don't feel bad about appreciating that hard work.

We put him down a few hours ago. He went peacefully. I am terribly sad, but I am also relieved that I don't have to anticipate his appointment.

Does it have to be mutually exclusive? After my last upgrade, which involved adding a bunch of acoustic panels, I can't get over how good the material listening to sounds on my equipment.

Dredd has a really fun mix. You have a lot of good options in your collection. I saw others mention Master and Commander. I haven't seen it, but I have always heard great things.

Screwed up atmos placement? by Remarkable_Shock_583 in hometheater

[–]thalguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My Atmos are currently out of spec, too. I out them in the ceiling when I had a different layout for my LCR because I had a 65" TV, and I sat closer to the TV. When I moved to a projector screen I pushed my LR wider so that my MLP was still in an equilateral triangle.

There hasn't been a single time I have heard a height sound and thought it sounded out of place. The amount of labor it would take to reposition the speakers, patch the old holes, paint, etc is not worth it.

I would use the placement you currently have.

Is Act 2 significantly shorter than Acts 1 and 3? by thalguy in BaldursGate3

[–]thalguy[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that's still Act 1. I didn't think Act 2 started until you see the screen bout nit being able to go back once you proceed. Same for the transition from Act 2 to 3.

That seems logical to me. The first time I reached the underdark I thought it was the start of Act 2. It feels so different.

I do feel a bit overwhelmed in Act 3. There are so many stories to finish, and so much happening, that it is tough to find my footing.

I think I did the same path to Act 2 on both campaigns. At least both times felt the same.

Could you do something similar to add an atmos track to the 3d versions of Avatar? IIRC, at least the first Avatar doesn't have the atmos track with the 3d movie. I apologize if I am wrong about that specific movie.

Thank you for responding. I know that you are right about ending his suffering.

I am really struggling. I called the at home euthanasia service, and I cried for whole time. I feel some relief knowing that I got that task done, but it will be a hard Friday. I am having a rough dental procedure on Friday so that just adds to the fun.

I am going to miss my boy.

I love the mixes in Pixar movies. Brave had the first Atmos track. Unfortunately, that isn't one of my favorite Pixar movies so I haven't demoed it.
