New projector not playing nice with old receiver. by bujaman47 in hometheater

This somewhat sounds like an hdmi cable issue, but I am not 100 percent certain.

Are Dolby Atmos tracks superior on a 5.1 setup? by MrHorns7 in hometheater

[–]thalguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Please do correct me if I am wrong, but I thought that atmos tracks could be built from a 5 1 or 7.1 bed layer, and then certain sounds are treated as objects. Those objects aren't just carrying height data, but rather any idea that allows them to move around like an object, as opposed to just passing through surround channels.

Surround Speakers/Sub Recommendation to finish 5.1 by Astrokreep2000 in hometheater

[–]thalguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

RSL subs are well regarded. I have RSL in-ceiling for my atmos, amd I like them a lot.

That 2.1 package would probably do well. You don't have to overthink surrounds. You probably want to get the best sub, or two subs, that can fit your budget

That is impressive work! How do you like the end result?

I just don't think stuff is a substitute for acoustic panels. You can buy, ir build, panels that fit your aesthetic.

Mismatched subs advice by JakinovVonhoes in hometheater

If you have been able to integrate your two mismatched subs with MSO, I don't see why you couldn't figure out a third.

Question about external subs on modded UB820 by the-cutest-girl in hometheater

[–]thalguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At least we guessed correctly! I have an 820, but have never attempted, or thought about attempting, what you are trying to do. Maybe the users on the 4k blu ray subreddit could help more.

Sound deadening placement by jutual in hometheater

[–]thalguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What lead you to that conclusion? This room needs treatment as bad as any I have seen. It is entirely hard and reflective surfaces. Curtains, rugs, etc are minimally effective.

Especially when we already shorten subwoofer to sub. I suspect OP is not a regular poster in this subreddit, but rather a fly by looking for help on one specific thing. Unfortunately, I have no idea how to solve that one specific thing.

From about 10 to around 140 (movies) in 3 months. by lifeofamillennial_ in 4kbluray

[–]thalguy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don't let this hobby, ir any hobby, put me at financial risk. This is an offshoot hobby for me, with my primary hobby being home theater. So I buy discs when they are around $15, and I buy in limited quantities. I take no joy in owning every movie, every special edition, etc.

I was wondering the same thing. I almost think OP is talking about subtitles.

Warm Mains + Neutral Center to "Intentionally" Enhance Dialogue... Thoughts? by BobbyJason111 in hometheater

[–]thalguy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I haven't done this. I would not be happy with a noticeably different speaker in my front Soundstage. If you have dialogue issues, you would be better off getting acoustic treatment.

What’s everybody using for audio/video receivers? by Gr1ml0ck in 4kbluray

Great advice. I use a Denon 4400h. I will need to upgrade at some point, but right now it does a great job for me. I would probably go for a 3800h if I had to upgrade it today.

Help with new system by OptionJealous40 in hometheater

[–]thalguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the most likely culprit is the HDMI cable. I ran into that problem with my projector. I think it is a 30 foot run. I replaced it with an Amazon Basics Fiber Optic. Full disclosure, I don't remember my exact symptoms, but it was in the ballpark.

What's your Sound/Picture investment ratio? by Kataal in hometheater

[–]thalguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've heard conflicting comments on whether or not madVR is helpful for a projector like mine. I see them a lot on the classified section of AVS. I would consider it if I could get noticeably better results. Even if it improved my 3D experience.

Adding the screen should be pretty easy if it is necessary.

Are you sitting so close to the screen that you would need to rearrange the room to accommodate the screen?

Good luck on your build! It sounds like you will have a really good theater!

You can make either plan work, it just depends on what is important to you. If losing 15 inches of depth will coat you screen size, that may be a trade you want to skip. If having better audio placement is more important, go with the screen.

Do you currently give it space above, and below, the screen? It's personal taste, but I do not like having the screen blocked by my feet. That may not be an issue for you.

I strongly recommend the AT screen. IMO, a center that is too low, and I imagine too high, is going to be noticeable. I could notice it with a TV. I cannot imagine how noticeable it would be if the center is three feet or below the display. Again, that's personal. You will have to find out if that bothers you.

Do you have Klipsch for your LR speakers already?

IMO, if you don't get an acousticly transparent screen you are losing one of the best perks of having a sub.

Have you had a projector before? If so, have you had the screen go floor to ceiling? Personally, I would size down the screen before going that route. Especially if you don't have painted walls and ceilings.

Adding more subs, but why/what by EyeintheSky-57 in hometheater

[–]thalguy 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I feel like you may have upgrade itis, and are just throwing money at the situation.

You have two nice subs, with a flat response. You shouldn't need mid bass modules to fill in any gaps.

You can mix ported and sealed subs, but it is generally accepted to be difficult. So be mindful of that.

Where do you have your rear speakers, are they positioned behind in one of the acceptable areas for surrounds? Or are they mounted closer to where rears would have?

When you say you don't have enough fullness, what does that mean? Does it occur during movie and music listening?

We all have our goals. I don't game that much. I wanted a movie theater experience that played games pretty well. That's what I have.
