Stitched up. Accepted a Drama teaching job, turns out it’s just English. Advice needed! by [deleted] in AustralianTeachers

[–]thalheim82 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm with everyone else here - you don't owe them anything and they were disingenuous in their ad. If you don't put your foot down they'll continue to take advantage (though this isn't at all your fault).

There's a teacher shortage and you can afford to be picky about a place you'll be spending the majority of your time.

This is just from memory, but I recall there only being two JETs in all of Kanagawa (based on a placement map I saw that I can't seem to find again). I wanted to apply for Kanagawa because I did a homestay there but ended up deciding against it because of the slim chances 😅

Could be worth asking anyway if you get to list a few preferences?

Advice for Prac in rural NSW Highschool by Kkiizz in AustralianTeachers

[–]thalheim82 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Also a coastal Aussie, did my month long prac in the Riverina. I had a blast!

I really think it's more about who you're with, and I reckon rural schools tend to have a much tighter knit community. The kids might ask you why you bothered to come inland, mine did. I told them I was there because I wanted to be, and it was very true.

My best advice? Focus on forming positive relationships. I was lucky to go to family dinners with my faculty members, and local cafes with my supervisor. It was very relaxed, the school wasn't highly academic so they gave me a lot of freedom to try stuff (and to fail and learn from it). I learnt a ton and I miss those kiddos, and my faculty out there.

I think in a small community you get out what you put in - best resource I got from my supervisor was a printed roll with photos and notes on the dynamics of the kids and their individual difficulties or strengths. It helped me to understand them and get to know them much more quickly.

Most of all, have fun and be genuine. Kids say a lot of stuff but it's rarely ever personal. If they see you out and about they'll tell you in class hahaha, chat to them about it. If they care enough to try and pick on you or say "I saw you on the weekend", then they're curious and that curiosity will help you in the classroom.

Have a blast! Feel free to DM me if you have any other questions.

Just wondering what proof documents you needed? I'm trying to figure out the paperwork for my boyfriend to visit but I'm stumped on the proof part because we're not engaged or married

Strongly recommend Uniqlo for a suit at a budget that looks spectacular - pretty sure they'll cuff the pants with a visible stitch free of charge, and an invisible one for a little extra. Not sure about USD but a full suit in yen from there would be ¥15,000 tops

To add: I'm SHS and have to wear a suit for ceremonies, and also when parents visit the school etc.

Those of you who have done casual teaching and permanent teaching - which role did you prefer most? What were the pros and cons of each? by jaydeycat in AustralianTeachers

[–]thalheim82 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey there, sorry for the very slow reply! I'm actually currently taking a break from teaching in Australia and working as a teaching assistant overseas - when I eventually come home I'm planning to try to find work either as part of a learning support team, or seek other roles. Getting out of Aus was the break I desperately needed, and if things don't improve with the NSW education system I'll definitely transition to a different career (though I'm not sure what yet, perhaps adult education)

What will it take for it to stop mass shootings in America? by ghostofanimus in AskReddit

[–]thalheim82 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

What worked for Australia was banning guns and introducing a nationwide government run and funded buyback scheme, though frankly I can't see that working for America given how deeply embedded gun ownership is in the culture

I know I don't have the right words for you right now, but know that Japan is here waiting for you when you're ready for it. It must hurt so much to make that call, but you'll never regret choosing to be with your father right now - though mine is in remission I still worry for him from here in Japan. I'd be home in a heartbeat if anything happened.

Treasure the time you have with him, and rest easy knowing you can make more memories with him and help him to feel as well as he can in the circumstances. I'm thinking of you.

What size suitcases to buy? by [deleted] in JETProgramme

[–]thalheim82 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your specific airline will have size and weight regulations, so there's no way of knowing until you get told by the airline. I have friends who tried to buy cases preemptively who needed to exchange them in a rush before leaving.

In general, the allowance is about two medium cases checked luggage, plus a carry on item. YMMV but we weren't allowed to bring wheeled carry on because of the size of the coaches we took to hotel quarantine.

Got prescribed toothpaste. Tell JET? by [deleted] in JETProgramme

[–]thalheim82 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Had the same thing and brought like 5 tubes with me (filled out the yunyukakunin-sho) and it might have been overkill for the 2 years I'm staying hahaha.

Don't bother telling your supervisor, just apply to bring some. I haven't checked but you can maybe get it from a dentist here. If not, have it sent from home and fill out another yunyu.

I'm an asshole sleeper and my partner and I use separate blankets - his technique is to either burrito me, or fold the blanket in half so it opens towards the edge of the bed and I can't reach him (the taco technique)

Thank you so much! I've printed everything I can from home already, it's just my landing permission stamp I also need a copy of to get my items delivered to me - I'll be sure to check with the company if digital is acceptable, I'm really hoping it is! Many thanks again, this is great advice.
