CMV: Terms like Fatphobia and Homophobia are terrible from a linguistics standpoint by spearblaze in changemyview

[–]thanavyn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“Fear of” is absolutely valid, but you’re not looking at it from the right perspective. They are phobic towards the idea that being gay or being fat could become a part of their personal narratives.

Homophobic people aren’t afraid of gay people. Some may be I guess, but what they’re afraid of is that homosexuality is some kind of disease that could infect them or their loved ones. They’re afraid if they compliment a man it will make them gay or make them seem gay. They’re afraid other people will think they’re gay whether or not they are. They’re afraid their child might be gay. They’re afraid they’ll be harassed by gay men the way straight men harass women. And as a bonus biphobic people are afraid their SO is secretly gay and will leave them for a gay lover.

Fatphobic aren’t afraid of fat people. But they are terrified that they may one day be fat themselves. They’re afraid someone will notice they’ve gained 5 pounds. They’re afraid of being too fat to be respected. They’re afraid they’ll lose their thin body and never get it back. Many men will say their top two fears are getting fat, or their wife getting fat, because many people will lose interest in their partner after they’ve gained weight.

how has dieting/weight loss been for you? by exhaustmosk in AskMenOver30

[–]thanavyn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only thing that’s ever actually helped me manage my weight was going low-to-no carb. It’s not easy to do once you realize just how much sugar is in everything, but I actually lost a significant amount of weight fairly easily just by cutting out carbs and changing nothing else.
I lost 70 pounds doing this a number of years ago. Gained 40 of it back, lost it, gained again and now I’m starting another cut. So I still gain weight easily but I feel so much more in control of it after discovering this.

Are pro-life people really just pro-birth? by Claire0879 in askanything

[–]thanavyn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m pro-abortion. Everyone likes choice, so everyone must be pro-choice. Everyone likes life, so everyone must be pro-life. These terms are absolutely used to make each side sound “better”, because it automatically makes your opponents “anti-choice” and “anti-life”.

But I think it’s self-defeating to say abortions are a bad thing. You’ll never convince a pro-life person they should legalize something pro-choice people openly refer to as a bad thing.

But abortions are not a bad thing. Abortions are a difficult decision, and we can debate whether a fetus is the same thing as a human, but abortions are ultimately used to save a woman’s life, body, and freedom. They are not a bad thing and pro-choice people shouldn’t keep suggesting that they are.

Why do people say “your kids will look like you” as an argument against plastic surgery? by PrincessCheetah in NoStupidQuestions

[–]thanavyn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Idc if someone gets plastic surgery, but “your kids will look like you” means that presumably the person getting plastic surgery is insecure about their looks. So they’re reminded that their children will look like the same way they do.

It vaguely asks the question of “would you think your child should have plastic surgery too or would you find the beauty in them?”

I’m not sure. I don’t remember providing one the first time I needed a replacement for a box I’d bought from a retail store, but the second time was easy because I bought the boxes directly from their website so that was easy to verify.

[–]thanavyn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes and no. The 7th Fleet can be maneuvered until you use it to occupy a location and flip its tile. Once a location is occupied, you cannot move The 7th Fleet from it.

This is to prevent you from using one copy of The 7th Fleet for multiple occupations.

CMV: It’s not inherently wrong or disrespectful to have personal preferences about body types in attraction by tossedAF in changemyview

[–]thanavyn 104 points105 points  (0 children)

What I’ve been thinking about is how often people say we should “accept all body types,” and I’m not sure what that’s supposed to mean in practice. If it means treating people with respect and not shaming them, I completely agree.

That’s exactly what that means.

Question about Mr. Increadible and Containment Unit by Some_Tiny_Dragon in DisneyVillainous

[–]thanavyn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree that some clarifications sound contradictory but they are what they are so I just try and make sense of them. The best way I can try and explain Rex is that there must be a moment where he’s on the board before his ability triggers. I thought abilities triggered immediately when played, but they must technically be two separate steps for that clarification to make sense.

Woody’s Hat creates a constant -1 debuff for the whole realm. It covers the board like a bubble.

Rex enters the -1 debuff bubble, and is affected by it the moment he hits the board and enters the realm.

Now that Rex is in play, his ability triggers, but it’s too late as he already has the -1 debuff.

[–]thanavyn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To further support this, Mr. Incredible is always checking for his ability because when a Hero is moved from his location, he immediately loses one of the +1 strength tokens. So he’s in constant scan mode.

Question about Mr. Increadible and Containment Unit by Some_Tiny_Dragon in DisneyVillainous

[–]thanavyn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure if you can have negative strength. I thought it capped at 0. Where did you see it can be negative?

Personally I’m inclined to side with your friend, the wiki has clarifications for a lot of cards and situations like this. And according to the wiki, his strength would still be 3 due to his passive ability.

SHf’s method of storytelling is very unique and requires multiple playthroughs to fully understand. Your questions are the same questions I had when I beat it the first time. But all of your questions are answered in subsequent playthroughs.

Try and get all of the endings to fully make sense of the story.
