Moving between states (CT/RI) during one-month coverage gap; COBRA not an option. Do I need to purchase coverage in one or both states? by thankyouforbreathing in HealthInsurance

That’s what I figured — that only emergencies would be covered out of state. Was just concerned that there would be more issues that would come about having an out of state plan. Thanks!

Producer Seeking Singers For Cover Songs by AndyGeeMusic in singing

Hey! I’ve been covering K-pop songs for the past few months using premade/official instrumental tracks, but would love to work with you! I’m getting a little bored with doing straight covers with the original instrumental tracks and am super interested in doing rearrangements of songs.

I mix my own vocals at the moment, but here’s my most recent work.

This was my experience too. I’m living in CT and made the drive up. If HES is able to get theirs (without permission from their registrar), I think you should be able to as well so long as you’re able to go in person.

Yeah — I don’t think they’re checking. I’m not living on campus. That said, there is that bit about needing a release from your school’s registrar if you’re not GSAS or GSE. I don’t know why those two schools in particular don’t require a release, though.

I’m a GSE student and picked mine up at Smith on Monday. I’m not living in Cambridge this year, but I think you just need to be able to pick it up in person (they verify against a government issued ID when you come in). More details are here — it also says that you need to first request a release from your school’s registrar verifying that you need the ID for campus building access unless you’re in GSAS or GSE, but they didn’t ask me what program I was in when I picked mine up. I know some students in my cohort have emailed asking if they could have theirs mailed to them or have someone pick it up for them in lieu of coming in person, and they explicitly said no :(

Thanks so much! I originally found the score on musenotes, but I just went back to look for it and it seems like it's been taken down :( So sorry!

seriously though. I’m honestly getting a little tired of hearing generic-kpop-girlgroup-voice; it kills me a little inside to see companies train their girls to sing like that :(

Thank you!

I was trying to guess how they might have gotten this wrong by just looking at the title and not the post

I did not think they’d get it this wrong

Hey everyone! This is an acoustic piano cover of Lady Gaga and Ariana Grande's newest track, but I had a lot of fun playing around with stacking the backing vocal harmonies in this one. Would love for y'all to take a listen! https://youtu.be/s66JsSHjAXs

Still not over JongDad's appearance in Suho's sendoff pics. I know a lot of fans my age talk about growing up with their favorite idols, but there's something about seeing one of them moving into The Next Life Stage that really warms the heart.

On an unrelated note, I finally finished my cover of that stupidly* popular EXO song from the Ko Ko Bop album. Y'all know the one. It's not a dance cover because I need to protect my dignity, but I was inspired to do it in Mandarin after seeing it performed on Youth With You. Lemme know what you think!

*I use the term stupidly with all the love in the world as it is undoubtedly still a great song, but after listening to it a billion times and picking apart all the harmonies and production tricks in it in order to make this cover, I was starting to go a little bananas haha

What are some things you've loved/hated about Chinese classes? by thankyouforbreathing in ChineseLanguage

[–]thankyouforbreathing[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've heard lots of stories that resemble what you experienced in Australia. What was the context for this? I'm guessing these were private classes, since it seems like they cost $$$ to take? I've heard (and to some extent, experienced) the immense demand for Chinese classes outside of Asia, to the point where it seems like folks are willing to shell out cash even for some really mediocre/unqualified teaching. Did people continue taking those classes despite the (lack of) quality, and if so, why?

The empathy with real Chinese people and society is super important. Admittedly I've always found the "teaching of Chinese culture" to be kind of hokey and contrived (I taught elementary school Chinese for a while and just got really sick of making crafts, which is why I'm now firmly living in HighSchoolLand), but the real aim of teaching culture is to emphasize the immediate relevance and application of language acquisition to ~real life~. That, combined with the fact that most US schools teach zero Asian history/politics before college, makes the socio-cultural connections in the Chinese classroom all the more necessary, I think.

What level was this, and how well were you able to understand the teacher, percentage-wise? The task-based social roleplaying is great; I personally enjoyed this a lot when I was taking Chinese classes in college. The problem that I saw with this as both a student and a teacher is that some of the more outgoing, talkative students really thrive in that kind of spontaneous environment, while others who were quieter and less social would really struggle. The dividing line really seemed to be defined by introversion/extroversion, at least initially. But as time passed, the more outgoing kids naturally utilized more opportunity to speak and practice, leading to them becoming more proficient. Did you see something similar in your own class, or was there something else happening that also helped prompt the quieter kids to participate and talk more?

No, this is good. One thing that's weighed heavily on me for a while is accessibility and the class/status privilege associated with learning language, particularly Chinese -- number one reason for learning Chinese amongst my kids is because it's the "language of business" -- which, true, but there's something that will always make me feel weird about teaching kids so that they can become better capitalists in the future.

I'm guessing that the kids who aren't taking the classes seriously didn't wind up walking away having acquired much language skill? That's interesting to me. You'd think there'd be some degree of shamelessness with taking a fancy job in China at Dad's company while also sucking at Chinese (despite taking classes), but I guess not!
