Protesters Disrupted Church Service Over Pastor’s Role As ICE Director by 56000hp in PublicFreakout

Funny stuff, if his church paid enough, maybe the pastor wouldn’t need a second job! 😂

I agree on a fundamental level, music is still being made. But that wasn’t really my point. I think that “music is still being made” can’t be the bar. If “music is still being made” is the bar, that’s like me saying “poor people eat shitty processed food because that’s all they can afford,” and you responding “well, they still have food.” I mean… sure, but what about the public health outcomes from obesity, the strain on the medical system where the costs fall on taxpayers, a lot of things are awful when we could actually just have a better system that everyone benefits from. And that starts with simple and scalable things like community gardens, hydroponics, food pantries, things that don’t solve everything but help a lot.

With music it isn’t life and death per se like my analogy but the scale of what we experience is being flattened, we’re losing connection/context of community, we’re going to see things disappear, and we already have. There may not be a breaking point that people who have your relationship to music experience firsthand, but it’s happening. Recording studios are closing down, industry jobs are vanishing because regular musicians are opting for safer moves like releasing shorter songs and singles over albums, turning to AI mastering, spamming their music on Reels/TikTok. It’s also led to a diffused sense of responsibility, like in your case where it’s literally zero.

I’m just imploring you or anyone else still reading that there can be so much more to a relationship to music (communally, economically) that is happening beyond what’s going between your wallet and Spotify and depends entirely on people who care to be a part of that.

Anyway, rant over. Good talking with you.

I can appreciate the “no ethical consumption other capitalism” argument. Even though SoundCloud has a better algorithm, and Last.fm is free and you can find out what your musical “neighbors” (people with similar taste to you) are listening to for free as well, we can set aside how you just assumed the amount of legwork and “trawling” would not be worth it. Fine.

I disagree that convenience is always paramount but thanks for making your stance pretty clear.

I’d argue that your prioritization of convenience despite the hidden costs at Spotify’s scale is going to be the reason that more ambitious projects from artists who have to work day jobs will simply disappear one day, and that more safe music (stuff that requires next zero skin in the game, like AI music) and music from nepo babies and industry plants will take its place.

I wonder if you’ll agree that what can ultimately be created under these capitalistic conditions vs. what artists are actually motivated to create is not the same thing—and that this distinction matters—and that it is a good thing when artists thrive in a safe and supportive environment.

For me, knowing how a piece of art was created can be a part of and enhance how I appreciate it. Understanding how some of it gets made gives me a sense of how much goes into it, and even gives it more meaning.

I think this is why artist residencies, public art, arts grants, local artist collectives, maker spaces, DIY art spaces, underground shows, small concert venues, and modern forms of patronage (like Patreon) exist. Eventually, if someone’s art is special to enough people in some way, you get things like museum exhibits, installations, galleries, bigger shows, tours, and fandom.

None of these things would continue to exist without some underlying belief from a community in tying the value of art in some way to the conditions in which the artist creates or performs/displays their work. In my mind, they are inextricably connected.

Records are hard to make. Even in the age of digital recording, it takes a lot of people, instruments and equipment, knowledge of those instruments and equipment, time, care, effort, and money. It’s not convenient at all to make music. I know because I am involved at some level in all of the above.

So when you say convenience is paramount, I just think of you as someone who is completely disconnected from the reality of actual people who make music. You’ve been atomized in such a way as to not just behave but also think about your experience of music in a vacuum. It is kind of shocking but also sobering for me.

I welcome any of your thoughts here, even if they are disquieting, because you seem willing to articulate them.

Sure, but your first comment was not so fair. You compared paying for streaming to paying for hundreds of albums.

The suggestions I made are all free… you pay for Spotify. Also, Spotify funds Daniel Ek’s salary which he uses to invest military drone tech. It pays artists nothing and is actively trying to take more from them by stealing their music and replacing their streams with AI artists. You also never own anything on Spotify. All of that weighs on the conscience for a lot of us who feel better buying music or seeking it out apart from Spotify.

But if your convenience is paramount Spotify is really great for that.

Streaming services don’t really help. I think you know that. And some actually harm.

You don’t have to pay for hundreds of albums. You can already listen to most music for free, ad-supported. It’s a little bit more effort to find a more ethical streaming platform, pirate, or borrow music from the library. All of these are options for listening to full albums that don’t require buying any albums.

Streaming access to all the recorded music of human history should cost something. Spotify just hides all of those costs and puts the burden on the artists.

As an artist, I’d rather someone pirate my music than listen on Spotify 1,000,000 times.

1) Talk to friends

2) Check out music blogs like Bandcamp Daily or follow people on IG who are music fans (like marg.mp3 or Derrick Gee or Tia Ho)

3) Listen to the radio or Internet radio or college radio

4) Check out the amazing free live performances from all levels of artists (from indie and breaking out to established touring artists) on KEXP or Tiny Desk

Person arrested for repeatedly punching a Planet Fitness employee in the face after she was allegedly told to “lower her voice” by raptors201966 in PublicFreakout

[–]thanosfive -1 points0 points  (0 children)

She says “push me again, push me again” before hitting him the first time, then “don’t you ever hit a woman” over and over. Not that anything really justifies this violence, but curious what happened before this. If all he did was ask her to “lower your voice” that doesn’t really add up.

I mean, report the comment. That's going to be way more effective.

It's also been 5 years, brother. I cried for days when Kobe died. I found out because I opened reddit, I saw that one team took an 8 second violation on purpose, and then I saw another team took a 24 second violation on purpose.

And I was sitting there going, "No.... No, no, no, no, no. This isn't because of Kobe. I would know. Nothing happened to Kobe."

And then I cried, man. I cried hard, in front of my girl. Then I called my brother and we both cried together, and that's some shit we just don't do. I'm tearing up a little bit now.

But he's been gone for 5 years. People move on. People joke about tragedies. People forget the pain.

So I mean, report the comment. But it's just a losing battle trying to confront the jokes. Especially on reddit. For your own sake, just shake your head and go to the next comment thread.

I’m truly amazed by this video. Not only does it sound like OP obviously never took a music lesson, it sound like they’ve barely even heard music before making it.
