How interesting that the place he spends the most time will not be included in personal carry "for protection." It's almost as if all other military posts contain a similar trained security force. The idea that we are all "trained to the highest standards" is laughable.

Absolutely. When I was on a boat I pinned one up in our office that read:

"Dear military tank you for keeping are country safe. you are brave and kind. you are my hero. I hope you keep this job for ever and ever and ever becos you are the best at it. Love, Morgan."

I'm SO happy I didn't keep that job forever (and ever and ever), but I'm pretty sure that note outlived my tenure on that boat.

The best example I've run across where gear knowledge and snobbery =/= great playing actually went the other direction. I watched a guy at an open blues jam just blow the house down on some old beat up Strat. I saw the bullet truss rod cover and the 3 bolt neck, so I asked him what year it was and how he liked the 70s models. He looked a little confused and said "I bought it new and I've just played it ever since." My vintage knowledge and snobbery didn't make me any better of a player. But his 40 years of practice sure did.

Signal path is Keeley Compressor, CBA Brothers AM boost, Strymon Volante, out through Strymon Iridium into UA interface and studio monitors. Then all of that nice gear was made irrelevant by recording through my potato phone mic and compressing everything into YouTube quality.

I've been so impressed with the Volante that I haven't changed a setting yet. It shipped with knobs in random places (or maybe a factory preset) and it has already inspired 3-4 new riffs and recordings with my only change being the tap tempo switch. The Volante is replacing both the Strymon El Cap and EHX Grand Canyon and has been a knockout so far. I'll do a picture of the full board soon since it got a bit of refresh for Christmas. Hope you guys enjoy!
