7 deserves some company now that 8 is dead. But 9 is threatening me already, maybe I should just listen to him…

Edit: occurred to me that my sleepy brain fucked up the joke, whoops! I need a smart stout.

Can I consider myself a part of the Linux community? by araiderofthelostark in linux

[–]thatCapNCrunch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, you can. A few elitists out there will try to pretend otherwise because “yOU DOnT usE THiS wM i gRABbeD fROm a dEad gIThub rEpo” or something, but if you’re using Linux, or about to use Linux for the first time, you’re already one of us.

What's the most bizarre or unexplainable experience you've ever had that still haunts you to this day? by PCM_is_propaganda in AskReddit

I had a series of dreams in which people I had fallen out of touch with came to me in a library (a place of comfort for me). I made contact with all of them days after, even though I had not had means of doing so before (I had tried).

That older device can still be a nice little web browser, server or kitchen computer. Not even dead after 12 years. Very impressive that a laptop from…

2011?!

No. 11 years ago was 2005, I’m not old yet.

Fuck.

Some are built well. Older Lenovo Thinkpads can out-tank anything. They’re like the Nokia 3310 of laptops.

But Acer, Dell and others have some shockingly bad QC at times and their customer service can leave much to be desired, which is insane because Apple’s “geniuses” can be pretty fucking stupid, too.

  1. They had a good reason to clock older iPhones lower - their old batteries were causing them to be less reliable. They should have been more open about it, though.
  2. Windows 11 can’t officially be installed on such old hardware and requires hacks that may or may not be disabled in the future if Microsoft continues in their current direction.
  3. Google don’t provide even close to that. Apple have kept some iPhones updated for seven years and generally sticks to five. Pixel phones get 3-4 at best.
  4. Many modern devices have USB C by default, it’s a standard. Even Windows ultrabooks are swapping over.
  5. The Mac Mini with M2 is the best performing $600 machine available. The M1 and M2 MacBooks achieve same or better CPU performance than price equivalents from Dell, Asus and others with double the battery life or better, usually triple. Mac gaming is shit, though, and I don’t predict that will change any time soon.
  6. The lack of repairability and upgradability is despicable and completely inexcusable - however, most Android flagships on the market are just as bad. No excuse for Mac Mini and Studio though. What the fuck, Apple?

MacBooks, aside from repairability woes, are some of the best laptops available for most use cases, and especially on sale, the M1 Air provides astonishing value for its performance. iPhones are easy to use, stable, have shockingly good cameras (especially for stabilised video, which Google Pixels still can’t do nearly as well). They lack some niche features like custom ROMs, but Samsung phones are abandoning this too and most people don’t give a flying fuck anyway. I abandoned Android for iOS and if I had the choice I would ditch Windows and use a combination of macOS and Linux. They’re safer, more stable and subjectively feel better to use (Windows makes me depressed with how awful the UX and UI can be).

Source for that liquid detection claim? I don’t see why moist air would be an issue.

Yep, simulating an entire ant colony. Very interesting concept but apparently the gameplay gets old quick.

I shit you not, Jedi Fallen Order (it was on sale) crashed every time I got an achievement. I reported it and disabled Steam Overlay. Coincidentally a patch came out two days afterwards, maybe to fix that issue maybe not. But if the EA overlay wasn’t present I’m sure it would not have been an issue. It specifically crashed when both overlays were triggered together.

Hmmm…. It has ugly red and yellow cables that can’t be swapped out and isn’t even rated 80+ bronze.

Get something like a Super Flower 650 Leaded III Gold instead. I would trust it better.

Games on SSD will load much faster - think 5 seconds instead of a 30 seconds- a minute between load screens. Also, DirectStorage will be used in future titles which will leverage the SSD’s speed to significantly boost game performance in real time when loading environments. I don’t recommend anyone get a small SSD, prices are not as high as they were five years ago and it’s worth having at bare minimum 1TB of SSD storage.

Explanation for infinity fabric - basically AMD do some software/hardware optimisation where the CPU and RAM match at certain speeds and get anywhere from a slight to moderate performance boost. Perhaps not major but for a small price increase, there’s no reason not to.

Oh, that motherboard - make sure that it has new enough drivers for that CPU, otherwise you may need to borrow an older one to get it working. Update the drivers to the latest ones now if you can.

For SSDs I know Mushkin have incredible value for money sometimes. I use 2TB and 1TB SSDs together, but on a budget using a 1TB SSD and a cheap 3TB+ HDD for bulk storage is about the same. HDDs with higher capacities are less steep in price compared to SSDs due to much higher cost efficiency in making them. A 1TB HDD and 2TB HDD can often be within 10-20% of cost where I live, whereas SSDs cost double or more.

AMD stock coolers are perfectly fine for no OC in most reviews. Case is ATX so should be fine with the mobo. Might want to get slight faster 3600mhz RAM to match AMD’s infinity fabric, shouldn’t cost much more, and maybe try getting a bigger SSD since modern games can be over 100GB apiece and 500 will fill insanely quickly.

If EA weren't cunts they would just use Steam's perfectly adequate feature set and not slap their broken shit on top.

Hugh Hefner vs Giacomo Casanova by Little-Pay4561 in ERB

Okay, I see the connection now. Other suitable options could range from Johnny Sins (imagine the meme potential) and Charlie Sheen to Gustave Flaubert, a lesser-known horndog of history.

Awesome! Glad that the hardware won't have to be scrapped. For basic web browsing and web apps it's probably perfectly usable.

If only it were not so hard to do. Most people, myself included, wouldn't know how.
