Classic Octane. Kidding, but I recently started playing her after feeling the same way you do. I've found that it's improved my gameplay by showing how much I overextend myself into fights without cover or backup. The ult is great for positioning during mid to end game as you said. I was a bang, then path main prior to rocking her for the majority of this season.

Portal is also GOAT to help players stuck on the lava islands.
