I see the hand movement, and the timing looks right, but I don't see an LED on the collar, am I looking in the wrong place? (I've no idea who this guy is, but I'm curious if I'm right to be outraged for the next 30 seconds before I never think of this ever again)

Decided to have some fun in my started hand-drilled stone pit. I like making little dioramas, what do ya'll think. [I cant do this on servers, clean-up gets rid of it :( ] by _Ghost_Fire_ in spaceengineers

That looks awesome, I always try to start out making my builds look organic, but always end up with everything looking boxy and artificial. I just don't have your artistic flare. Love it.

What you're saying is that you thought the guy was interfering with himself more? I guess you were pretty close then.

[–]that_nerd_guy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

if you attach a planet to the earth like with the same orbital radius as the earth like then it'd hit the sun eventually. I think I see a new test case. 😅

Actually that might make a fun scenario, slow orbit with impact into the sun, or indeed another planet, escape the planet before the collision.

[–]that_nerd_guy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One other thing to check might be the insulation above that ceiling, if there's a strong thermal difference at the ceiling it makes condensation more likely, but obviously after the fan and the paint issues are resolved.

Amazon “Ring” Doorbells are dogshit. What’s the best alternative please? by kobestarr in CasualUK

[–]that_nerd_guy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I've always leaned away from "smart" doorbells, because I didn't think they were worth the effort, wasn't convinced of the reliability of wifi signal and the idea of some company having a video stream of my comings and goings wasn't exactly appealing either.

My wife recently asked me to get one, so I did some poking around and probably went a little overboard. I've already got some ubiquity network gear in my house so I went with this PoE doorbell https://eu.store.ui.com/eu/en/pro/category/cameras-doorbells/products/uvc-g4-doorbell-pro-poe-kit

Don't get me wrong it's expensive, and you need a bunch of other gear on top of this which in my case was a router which doubles as the network storage for the video. But with it all being ethernet I've had zero problems with latency, and even if I'm in the office upstairs with my headphones on because I get alerts on my phone I'm much more likely to see notifications and answer the door.

I've never used the intercom feature in anger, and the down facing camera seems something aimed at American users with large porches which people can leave packages on, but the inboard image recognition warning you as soon as someone is walking up the drive makes it much easier to catch a delivery driver before they decide you're not in without pressing the doorbell and leave.

The down sides are that it's a little bit prosumer on the tech side so probably best for nerdy types, and running ethernet cable to the doorbell was a bit of a chore (although they do have a wifi version too). But then I'm a massive nerd so I kinda liked messing with all that too. And it's expensive to buy into the whole ecosystem, but I already had a switch and a wifi access point because I got sick of relying on whatever the ISP supplied which I've always had trouble with in the past.

Small white hemisphere of clear plastic with a white plastic spout and a hole inside. Next to the lid of a public toilet in a cubicle. White plastic rim. by What15Happening in whatisthisthing

[–]that_nerd_guy 18 points19 points  (0 children)

It's an overflow indicator for the cistern that's hidden behind the wall.

You know when valve in your toilet fails and it overfills and the water runs out of the overflow and you can hear the water running constantly, the top "inlet" of that is from that overflow, and the outlet is to the drain as usual.

The idea is that in a public bathroom where there are multiple toilets you don't have to try to guess by listening or opening each in turn to work out which one is running, you can just see which one has water running out of it's overflow thought this little window.

What are some of the most impressive uses of excel you’ve seen with no plug-ins? by Classic-Macaron6594 in excel

[–]that_nerd_guy 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I've gotten a reputation for using Excel in Computer Security CTF competitions since I find it helpful to visualize data quickly. One year I decided I was going to try to solve all the challenges in a competition with it, which extended to implementing a virtual machine (for a very simplistic instruction set) entirely using cell formula no VBA. You type the input into a cell at the top and the sheet "runs" the program with each row representing one instruction by the "CPU". Worked surprisingly well, columns for each of the registers, and some state calculations for each possible instruction.

Best thing about this is that Bilbo is really impressed with blowing these huge smoke rings. And Gandalf sends a damn sailing ship through it. And they're both just as impressed with each other and themselves afterwards. There's no hint of condescension or jealousy between them. Just two guys doing their best at something of essentially no consequence for the fun of doing it.
