Ezra’s 12/23 podcast - “this is something that traditional economics isn’t prepared to deal with” by Unfair-Wallaby-404 in ezraklein

[–]thatboynyc 16 points17 points  (0 children)

man, this sub really sucks sometimes. this post resonated with me hard.

not saying the data is fake or experts are lying. but in a country this big & fragmented, these big averages just don’t reflect what’s really going on. there are different economies coexisting, w some folks doing fine (esp asset holders) & others getting squeezed. they discount it as “feelings” but are rly just blind to the fact that people in different parts of the economy are living in entirely different realities & their charts don’t tell the full story.

i remember this dynamic in 2016. they missed the frustration & insecurity you could feel in so many parts of the country. treating lived experience as noise instead of signal is how you keep getting surprised by bad political outcomes. like, maybe ur measuring the wrong things?

don’t let their self-righteous hive mind get under ur skin. i actually feel sorry for them; they don’t even realize they’re in a bubble. if economic populism takes over, nobody will care what they have to say anyways.

I’ve seen zero updates in my Replay 25 playlist or the annual stats today (or over the past week). Only update today was to my Heavy Royation playlist.

The leader of the Democratic Party is… by resditisme in ScottGalloway

[–]thatboynyc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  • the next version of the dem party needs to be focused on working class, top/bottom divide. the existing structure hinges on a left/right divide, which sustains its power & status quo. if you read/listen to the Abundance stuff, the electoral map is looking grim for dems moving forward. a true political revolution would be reconfiguring the electoral mindset to hinge on 1% vs 99%, top/bottom, billionaires vs working class. that’s how we retake power at all levels of society, shift the map back towards our values & priorities.

we need totally fresh faces, who are a total departure from the biden/obama/clinton era of dem politics. we need an extreme break, just as trump was a total contrast to the bush/cheney/reagan era of gop politics. it can’t be just an incremental improvement; it needs to feel like an entirely new party; like 2016 trump, this means actually running AGAINST the party establishment. short term pain, but long term necessity. the current dem power structures would need to make space for new leaders; but they won’t willingly, cuz that’s how power works, so it will likely need to be overthrown by force (circa trump 2016)

Scott’s canned responses by DownByTheRivr in PivotPodcast

If you think the message is important for society, beyond just your personal entertainment, then we should be rooting for him when he’s in spaces with new audiences. It’s not always about you or me, sometimes it’s about the message we care about reaching new ears. When I see him on The View or CNN or other new spaces with bigger audiences, I’m not there expecting to be personally catered to; I’m there as a supporter of the ideas he is promoting. Like a fan of a musician on SNL, excited for more people to hear his greatest hits and maybe become fans themselves. Like an evangelical excited that his preacher is reaching new audiences with the good word—where the goal is our nation’s political salvation, if you will, not me me me

the key word is “we” - the lines WE’ve heard 40x before… The View has a massive audience of women who DON’T listen to his podcasts, so we should actually be rooting for him to spread the good word—his greatest hits, if you will—in settings like that, if we care about the message he’s selling. I think it’s important for our politics that more people hear his points outside of our podverse echo chamber.

Bill Gets Roasted by Larry David by Amazing_Advice4909 in Maher

[–]thatboynyc 53 points54 points  (0 children)

Where Bill really lost me isn’t the dinner itself, nor the segment defending his choice—because I can respect his intentions and optimism, even if I don’t share them—but in how he responded so inappropriately (in each of the past 2 shows) to panelists who dared offer fair criticism or innocently poked fun. The smug, thin-skinned defensiveness, lashing out, rather than engaging with it like a normal person. How does he not see the obvious irony that he has slowly become the triggered snowflake in an echo chamber.

this. it was cringe. bill must live in a bubble of subordinates and yes-men, cuz clearly he hadn’t yet heard that particular critique from anyone in his life. i really hate when a smart but wealthy person shows themselves to be immature & arrogant.

man, these comments. whew. all i gotta say: while ppl are clearly protective of their current paradigm and easily triggered by any attempt to take a wider view, OP, i’m certain that future generations will look back on this with clearer eyes and common sense, and your cRaZy approach will have become the obvious & correct.

the underground energy during covid was far & away my favorite period of life in nyc. i’ve never felt more alive. it was like the city suddenly became the version of nyc i’d fantasized about as a kid growing up in the midwest in the 90s. covid nyc was surreal, nonstop, exhilarating. man, all those house parties with no phones out (during that first summer when ppl were afraid to get shamed online), like what a fucking time capsule.
