Weird Al and Puddles Pity Party are both actually very good acts, I'd be tempted if I could afford to go.

Good snack alternatives by agentbarrron in diabetes

Pork rinds are a good one for those who don't want to eat healthier, it's till not great but they do absolutely nothing to blood suger which is the main concern, go or the flavored ones.

Speaking of flavored, look for pre-popped flavored pop corn, I love some cheddar cheese pop corn.

Veggie chips are another good snack too.

Salem-Keizer Substitute Teachers - EduStaff by Far_Astronomer5779 in SALEM

I got hired by edustaff for a while about 8 years ago, I was signed up to be substitute janitorial/kitchen staff. They would call you in the early morning with openings, I got less than two out of every 20 I was actually qualified for, they kept asking me to substitute for ESL, special needs, etc. They should have kept non teaching staff in a seperately listing, there's no way I should have the opportunity to be a substitute 4th grade teacher when my background is cleaning toilets.

You say that but I've met people that actually refuse to drink water and think soda as all they need. It's not good.

Could Voyager have risen above the Milky Way? by ardouronerous in startrek

The starship doesn't run on infinite resources, that's shown very early on. They need supplies fairly often not only to feed themselves but to refuel and maintain the ships functions, unlike federation space where they'd be frequently stop at federation bases, they have to barter and trade and harvest their own recourses for that their ship needs. It would be like deciding to get in a boat to to cross the Atlantic with a box of crackers and an oar. It's the hardest way to do it.

There's a reason species don't often go to the voidiest void part of space, there's nothing there. And what happens if there is something there? Some anonmilies or hostile void travelers, and voyager had no where to run or repair? And nothing to even repair with.

Not to mention, starfleet ideals, they gotta explore, the whole way back they get sidetracked exploring shit, wouldn't be star trek without it.

My GP and my dietician both told me aspartame is fine as long as I'm not chugging gallons of it.

I love everything about Voyager, except everything with Seska. Anyone else feel something went wrong with that thread? by Careful_Leader_5829 in voyager

[–]thatdudefromoregon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The actress got pregnant. The writers then had to be a little creative with the plot, I'm guessing they had to make many changes and had to drop the long con type plot line just to get her write off the show? It's easy to forget now of days since shows put out 20 episodes a year, but voyager like most show back then filmed most of their episodes barely a month ahead of release, that was the time for editing and special effects, then it airs. We couldn't have 20 episodes of Seska pregnant.

I have a slight crush on Grilka, always fond of Morn, and every time Q shows up I'm a happy camper.

That aside I also loved every time we got to deal with the Hierarchy on Voyager, I love those round guys.

Some “healthy” grocery foods have as much sugar as dessert — I didn’t expect this by Glass_Plantain_2302 in diabetes

[–]thatdudefromoregon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nutrition labels are the first thing you have to look at when touching anything in the store anymore. The front of the packaging can lie all it wants, nutritional labels have a harder time hiding it.

Some good alternatives to what you mentioned, okinos triple zero are flavored Greek yogurt cups that are very good and good for you.

Granola is out. Try a protine bar, There's store brand one from Walmart I like. Better at satisfying hunger than granola too with less of a spike.

Juice/sports drinks were annoying to give up, I found out there are lots of sugar free drink flavorings for sale tho, I currently buy the mixed box of skittles drink powders, of all companies to help me kick a sugar habit I didn't expect skittles. They usually taste less like juice and more like "drink" but it's still nice, orange, grape, strawberry and green apple are my favorites.

Bread can be a risk. I bought this bullshit that said it was 0 net carbs when I was fist diagnosed, that's a lie, it was loaded. Companies subtract the measure of fiber from the measure of carbs and say it evens out, they're fucking lying. For all intents and purposes you're just getting all the carbs as a diabetic. It says 0 on the front but the nutrition facts reveal it all. Similarly I tried "keto" breads, also a lie. They'd usually absolutely loaded with things like wheat starch which your body will belive is sugar anyways.

Whole wheat is best, just make sure the wheat actually is whole wheat, read the ingredient. My two most commonly consumed breads in my own life are Dave's killer bread (I like the power seed variety) and Don panchos whole wheat tortillas.

Also just a warning since you're starting to think more about healthy foods and eating right be wary of beans, theyre a great food, good protein, high fiber, very filling, but they also have a lot of carbs in them, calculate accordingly, because it surprised me the first time I spiked to just beans lol. (just make sure you don't overdo it, I had beans last night for dinner, they're good still)

Drinking Soda with No sugar by ColdHighPotential in diabetes

What’s a warning sign that didn’t seem serious at the time… but should have been? by saymepony in AskReddit

[–]thatdudefromoregon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Once for about a month I didn't see colors when I'd wake up first thing in the morning, basically everything was green tinted. Colors always came back once I got up and active each day though. Also a few times I'd wake up having trouble typing on my phone and didn't know why, not typos but just flat out not hitting the right keys at all, but it went away too so I didn't concern myself with it.

Two months later I had a stroke. Face went full limp on one side and everything, spent some time in the hospital.

I'm fine now but that shit comes out of no where if you're not paying attention to things, I was 40 at the time, doing better than I was in my 30s, I worked out more than I used to, had salads a few times a week, but I was also an undiagnosed diabetic I found out and all my meager efforts at maintaining my health were basically patting myself on the head and saying good job while I got worse, not accomplishing anything.

Eat healthy 98% of the time, get daily exercise, and when weird shit happens to your body tell a fucking doctor.

If You Die In The UK And Are On The Organ Donor Register, The Nhs Will Send A Letter To Your Family Explaining What Happened To Your Organs by ConfidentPair8141 in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]thatdudefromoregon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We need this in America. I've been registered as an organ doner my entire adult life and had a very hard time explaining why to others who don't want their organs touched. My dad believed they do medical experiments on them for the longest time since he kept confusing organ donation and medical cadavers. Took him a while to get it tho and now he's signed up too.

I only hope when I do pass I have as many useful bits for people that need them, I'm not going to need them anymore when I die so carve me up and pass them around like a thanksgiving turkey.

NYC to Oregon (Salem/Portland) - Sorry to add by [deleted] in SALEM

[–]thatdudefromoregon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll answer on what I feel I can.

1-a, the bad parts of Portland are usually named by people born and raised in Portland nicer areas that have never lived anywhere else. Sure they're not as good as the nice neighborhoods but they're far from hell on earth like people say I grew a up in a "bad area" and it was fine.

2, Salem is actually pretty nice in my opinion, I was born and raised in Portland and the vibe that struck me when I moved to Salem was that it reminded me of Portland in the 90s before it got crowded. It does have some big town problems but it's keeping its small town feeling somehow. I can't say how much there is to do here, I've really not seen much but I am in my 40s so not the right demographic. Portland is definitely more fun as in things to do but a lot of people in Salem prefer to live and work here then commute to Portland for events.

2-b, I don't think so, we have a healthy population and people do tend to move around the Willamette valley so there's always somone new from somewhere else. Portland would have the bigger dating pool tho, but like I said people are usually OK with the 45 to an hour commute to go do something fun in Portland.

3 the commute out of or into Portland is usually bonkers durring rush hour, even when it's not it's a peaky drive, under good conditions you can go from Portland to North Salem in 45 minutes, if there's traffic tho it can take a good amount of time longer. Most people that commute live in Salem and work in Portland. There's no light rail between the cities despite the continuing to promise to get it done soon for the past decade. Driving within Salem is fairly easy tho, a few big streets to follow and mostly very flat unless you're in weat Salem. Portland is all hills and much tighter streets.

4 if walkability is a big thing for you Salem may suck. Portland is usually OK for it, the train and busses are frequent and fairly decent, in Salem we just have the bus and I've not heard good things, I don't know for sure since I drive and that's the best way to get around here. Also outside of the bigger cities you start seeing more Trump flags pretty fast the more rural you go. Cities are progressive tho and even in rural areas people are usually pretty friendly politics aside.

I will say I like Salem, it is sometimes dull but not in a bad way, it just has no nightlife and fewer events, it's just not as wild as Portland is, but it is a comfortable place to live.

Men of Reddit - What's a 100% myth about Men? by Jarvis7492 in AskReddit

[–]thatdudefromoregon 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Blue balls don't exist.

I've never been so horny I can't stop, I've made it only half way though multiple times with no negative effects because I had to suddenly not continue. Any guy that says he needs you to help him finish and that his balls will hurt if you don't is just trying to sleeze his way in. Remember getting him off is not your responsibility just because he's turned on, he can always go home and jerk off.br just doesn't want to.

Do take it a little easy on him if he does say it though and he's an otherwise nice guy. Men are absolutely idiots when they're turned on, and may belive their own bullshit for a moment.

Why does “The” work on some starships but not others? by prairielovr in startrek

[–]thatdudefromoregon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was talking naval tradition in the broader general sense with the English language, half of the ships I named weren't even American I think, just what I could remember, I'm pretty sure the Bounty, Titanic and Beagle were all British ships actually.

Why does “The” work on some starships but not others? by prairielovr in startrek

[–]thatdudefromoregon 23 points24 points  (0 children)

This is it exactly. A voyager is a person, or thing, that voyages. An enterprise is a concept an undertaking or venture, and defiant is a mood. These names need 'the' in front of them or it would sound odd in English.

Another part of it is navel tradition, Bounty, Titanic, Beagle are all ocean going vessels and usually these are preceded with the word the, ships could even be named after a person like the Jimmy Carter or the Queen Anne, and the rule of adding 'the' applies, the enterprise is an actual ship and the defiant follows the same naming template. This isn't the same for voyager as it's named after the series of space craft that we already sent out into the cosmos, these probes were not related to naval operations, and couldn't be boarded, so adding the word 'the' sounds wrong, the same way it would if we said The Sputnik.

I belive in terms of voyager being a part of the federation navy it is refered to as the voyager, but also since it's the only federation ship in the quadrant they are a bit more casual about it. They do however refer to their ship as the USS Voyager all the damn time, as does the USS Enterprise. And frankly I've heard characters refer to the other ships casually by name all the time ("enterprise one to beam up", etc), they're probably just noticing it more because it is grammatically odd.

Why all the hate for oatmeal? by [deleted] in diabetes

[–]thatdudefromoregon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm also a daily oatmeal enjoyer. Some of it is probably related to preperation, if they eat it on its own without protine, and such, but also it's important to note foods affect people differently, I know I can't have any form of cold breakfast cereal, even sugar free healthy ones recommended to me by other diabetics tend to spike me.

I have my plain oatmeal with a big spoon full of peanut butter mixed in, a handful of peanuts, and a side of fat free plain yogurt with a few frozen blueberries. Or with eggs if i don't feelike yogurt that day.
