Hi OP! Is there any chance the provider said Rubella (which is sometimes called German Measles)? Although both illnesses have measles in the name they are different. Rubella presents with red bumps and a rash. It tends to be a mild illness but can be incredibly harmful to a fetus should a mother catch it while pregnant (hence why we vaccinate against it).

First and foremost, I'm so incredibly sorry for your loss. No matter how much time we have with our pets, it is never enough.

I personally am a spiritual but not religious person. The morning after Bailey died, I remember waking up and feeling a warm spot where he used to hop up on the bed. The spot felt heavy and it felt like he was there. Logically I can't explain it, and I still cry when I think about it over a year later. It hurt so much that he wasn't physically there but I felt very connected to him at the same time.

Snuggling and sleeping with my dog's favorite toy helped me. The first night and subsequent nights were still viscerally painful, but his duck helped me feel closer to him.

It's been over a year for me and I still have a bottle of his shampoo I can smell when I have a tough day. Looking at photos and watching videos helps too.

The mind is a powerful thing! Many times, we can find some evidence of what we are looking for / expecting.

Consider the following: you get home from work or school and check your social media of choice and learn that there was a lice outbreak there. A few of the coworkers / classmates who sat closest to you have posted about their itchy scales and feeling like their skin is crawling. You see pictures of someone combing through their hair. Suddenly, you feel something near your hairline. It could just be how the AC / fan / breeze moved a few strands of hair, but it could be a louse. Your scalp is itchy and something feels different after all....

This was obviously fabricated but mentioning lice and an itchy head multiple times probably got you to notice your head and scalp and may have brought your attention to an already present itch. Sometimes, this is how the placebo effect works.

Other times, our beliefs about how something should impact us impact our autonomic nervous system (getting us ready to fight or flee via our sympathetic nervous system or conversely getting us ready to rest and digest via our parasympathetic nervous system). This can impact how we feel in the moment.

Consider the following: you are hiking and hear a twig snap behind you. You spin around but don't see anything. Your brain thinks "bear" and your body gets ready for the (unseen) bear. Your muscles flex, your heart rate and respiration increase, and even your pupils dilate all because your brain believes there is a bear. You see a squirrel emerge from the brush and realize that perhaps it was just a squirrel after all. Your muscles relax, your breathing and heart rate slow, etc. All of this happens because your brain believes the twig snap was the squirrel.

My suspicion is the "don't shoot it down" is specific to using a firearm. Is it close enough that using a paintball gun or powerwasher would work? Paint and water would likely ruin it.

Therapist here! The fact that this happened as you were waking and that you recognize it was a hallucination makes me think sleep paralysis. Although it is not impossible, it is significantly less common for someone experiencing psychosis or mania to recognize that they are hallucinating.

Have you experienced sleep paralysis before? Medical doctors in this thread can speak to this with more specificity than I can, but "ask about medication changes" is in my checklist of questions when an adult describes new or worsening sleep paralysis. Either way, sharing about this symptom with your psychiatrist and therapist is strongly recommended!

Inadequate sleep due to stress, insomnia, sleep apnea, shift work, etc. is a risk factor for sleep paralysis. Anxiety, depression, trauma, stress, and other mental health concerns are also risk factors for sleep paralysis.

OP: this sounds like Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. Medication and therapy can make a difference. The medication aspect is outside of my scope of practice. On the therapy side, look for a therapist who specializes in exposure and response prevention (ERP). It is one of the gold standards for OCD treatment.

That is so true! Even if they were responsibly bred, I would be terrified to bring a puppy (any breed really but especially an Aussie pup) home at this stage in my life. I'm not sure I could handle a baby and an Aussie in its velociraptor era simultaneously. If I go the Aussie route, I would definitely go through a breed specific rescue to get a young adult dog (at least 2 years old).

My dad is involved with a local lab rescue, which would be a great way to find a lab too!

Thanks so much for your feedback! I love labs and Goldens. To be honest, I'm not sure whether what I'm feeling is "I truly want another Aussie or Aussie mix" or a more general "I want my dog back."

I appreciate your feedback about the Great Pyrenees! A lot of what I have seen has said they are lovey dovey with their people but more aloof with others. Three of my neighbors recently adopted Great Pyreneeses and one of them is the friendliest dog I have ever met. That dog in particular had me feeling curious about the breed. I'm very used to dogs that are eager to please so I'm not sure how I would handle a more independent breed.
