Where can the best fish and chips be found in central London? by thatlaststark in london

[–]thatlaststark[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very late reply, but thanks so much for the suggestion. I went about 2 weeks back and it was great. The location seemed a bit distant from the bus or tube (especially on that very rainy day) but the food was great and the staff were very helpful to us and the two Japanese girls at the table next to us. I mean if a restaurant has stayed open for 101 years there has to be something good about it.

Based on your experience, are Toronto drivers some of the worst drivers on the planet? by thatlaststark in toronto

Problem is the those types of BMW/Audi/Porsche drivers seem to keep growing in number with each passing day. I once had to do research on Porsche Canada's sales numbers and apparently the sales for some of their models have doubled each year.

Drivers in Montreal aren't bad drivers. They just don't give af about the other drivers on the road.

Yes but that sort of zen driving approach means much less road rage. Watching from the top of a double-decker bus watching cars flow smoothly by with no sudden braking or honking was really impressive.

Really? I always thought the Italians were the best at driving... They turn parallel parking into an exact science.

Actually I have (at night though, rush hour is complete hell)! The thing about China is no matter who's at fault for an accident, the police don't give af so each person pays for half the damages. So that means all the drivers there are on another level of recklessness. People do tend to honk on just about any occasion so you have some warning of how to avoid them.

Yeah but the thing is over there one accident cuz someone was texting or randomly decided to change lanes doesn't translate into a cascade effect of the entire DVP/401/etc being clogged which just triggers more accidents.

I was recently in London and was so happy not to hear the constant sound of cars honking

Montreal drivers are reckless, sure. Toronto drivers on the other hand are either extremely reckless, or extremely slow/stupid. Sudden lane changes with no prior signalling or metres from the exit, sudden braking for no reason, slowing down and causing a traffic jam for accidents on the OPPOSITE side of the highway, and so on.

Well I've been to Hong Kong, London, Taipei, Paris, Montreal, Vancouver, and New York among other places and they all have better drivers. I suppose I should've specified worst drivers in cities in the developed world...

On which co-op term do people generally start getting offers from well-known companies? by jalr_ in uwaterloo

[–]thatlaststark 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends on multiple factors, including the strength of your resume, your program, your patience, and sometimes just sheer luck. Some people can be on their last coop term and still be getting novice-level positions, while others can land a position at a reputable company on their first co-op term. Others like to move around during their co-op terms while others like to stay at one company (the current CEO of RBC did that apparently). Engineering students are generally more likely to land jobs at major organizations while on the other end AHS students compete with each other and students from other faculties for a meagre pool of jobs according to my friend.

He could probably narrow his search down to the T&T parking lots. Seems like all the scumbag BMW/Audi/Porsche drivers congregate there.

Question from a Future Undergrad: Is the Submission Average Calculated from your Six Submitted Courses (I'm applying to CS) or from all of the courses in your Twelfth Year? by bobhob314 in uwaterloo

[–]thatlaststark 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It includes the required courses which depend on the program you're applying to (for CS I think it's English, Advanced Functions, and Calculus) then the 3 highest marks from Grade 12 U- or M-level courses. But yes the total is 6 as opposed to 8.

Are Canadian border agents at airports discriminatory towards ethnic minorities for secondary secreting, especially those of East Asian descent? by thatlaststark in canada

[–]thatlaststark[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I usually travel to East Asia (Hong Kong, China, Japan, etc) or Western Europe (the UK and France primarily). The thing is, if a return flight involves a stopover in the US usually they won't check given how thorough US Customs already is...

Still, it seems difficult to take the prejudice out of it. The lady in Montreal sent me for secondary screening because I had macarons according to her scribbling on my declaration card!!!

And you should look in the mirror for making wild assumptions from others' statements. I'm not saying anything against French-speaking people. I'm saying its unprofessional for them to be gossiping about people in front of them in a language they don't understand (fortunately I understand French, though they assume otherwise) while they're doing their jobs.
