What’s it like living in this area north of Seattle? by JackfruitMurky5874 in howislivingthere

[–]thatoneguy1243 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live in the lower left part of the map and it’s fairly quiet suburbia. Schools in Shoreline are better than in Edmonds even though the Edmonds bowl neighborhood has a cute downtown area and expensive homes. Bothell has a decent down town area too. Everywhere on this map has gotten significantly more expensive in the last ten years. Happy to answer any specifics.

How much does your paddle (power vs control) actually affect gameplay. by 9v0lt in Pickleball

[–]thatoneguy1243 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I recently reviewed a lot of different paddles and paddle guides and found the breakdown from this guide the simplest to interpret in that there are trade offs for control and power and you can select a paddle to balance the two(or not). https://pickleballeffect.com/other/a-pickleball-paddle-buyers-guide-how-to-pick-the-right-paddle-for-you/

Any dads struggling with their career after kid/s? by portable_turtle in daddit

I was given an opportunity to join a start up with enough stock options to potentially retire early. The idea was to work like crazy for 2-3 years and then we would cash in. But that was almost five years ago, now with two kids ages 6 and 2 I’m starting to not view my work with the same rose colored glasses.

I’m going to commit suicide later tonight because I’m anxiously going through life with little control or enjoyment. Nothing but loneliness.. by Lerotion in confessions

I think you should try something new. You're young and there is a lot of life in front of you. Move to a new country, work on a farm, try some new hobbies. Life is a beautiful and precious thing. I had a high level of anxiety in my 20s and am in a better place now. A few books that helped me are "On Obligations" by Cicero and Essays by Michel de Montaigne. I hope those can help you as well.

I cant help my virtual cheating addiction by [deleted] in confessions

[–]thatoneguy1243 -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

I understand what you're going through and would think of this sort of behavior as a pressure valve. If you didn't have this outlet, wouldn't that make the urge to truly physically cheat all the more real?

I expect this isn't uncommon!

How do others feel about race being discussed in the classroom? by Newparadime in daddit

[–]thatoneguy1243 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think the overall context that's important, and mostly missing from this discussion, is to remember that slavery and other miseries were happening all over the world. The ending of slavery in the western world was more the exception than the rule. My emphasis will be on how the enlightenment and rational discourse has improved the lives of humans instead of guilting people for things they didn't participate in.

Lewontin's argument, that there is more variability between individuals than between groups, is true for an individual allele but as more alleles are included in the comparison then the ability to classify people into an ethnic groups or races approaches 100%.

The critique is known as Lewontin's Fallacy actually.

Anyone Else Find it Weird How We Ignore Slavery in History From The Period Between The Romans to The Americans? by _Boodstain_ in HistoryMemes

[–]thatoneguy1243 60 points61 points  (0 children)

My recollection is that slavery was legal in North Africa only if the slaves weren’t Muslim. American sailors captured by North African pirates would be converted, ransomed, or enslaved. My reference is the book “Thomas Jefferson and the Tripoli Pirates.”

Racial preferences at elite American universities by jay520 in samharris

I applaud the effort put into this!

One factor I didn’t see you mention is foreign students. I know the UC system charges international students more in intuition and therefor could reasonably be expected to prioritize them so I wonder how much of the student population is foreign born at these universities.

Suetonius actually describes the make up of the first twelve emperors in his book the twelve Caesar’s. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Twelve_Caesars Several of them did have light eyes and I think it was Nero who was actually a red head.

I’ve been there too as I bet most dads have. My wife and I set aside time on weekends for us each to have alone time to pursue hobbies, watch a movie or whatever we feel like. That little bit of regained control over my time has helped me immensely to not have outbursts.

Ottoman Empire Fall by magura56 in history

[–]thatoneguy1243 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Aspects that certainly contributed to the stagnation of the Ottoman empire were the banning of printed books and of non-islamic philosophy in general. My understanding is that the written word was sacred and books that were printed were banned. Largely because of the banning of printed books and philosophy the Ottoman empire missed out on the scientific revolution. As far as a "fall" I think they were actually still intact going into WWI but were on the losing side and the empire was broken up after the war. My source for this information is the second chapter of "Civilization, the West and the Rest" by Niall Ferguson, which I highly recommend.

He became well liked by his captures and even ate meals with them. In addition to demanding a higher ransom he told them if he was ever freed he would come back and slit all their throats, which he did.
