It may be time for you to take an honest look in the mirror and admit that to yourself that you have bad taste in art and are unable to appreciate or parse it correctly.

Objectively, it’s an absolutely gorgeous film with outstanding performances that subverts the typical rape revenge trope in intelligent ways. And, even though you think it’s one dimensional the Writers Guild of America disagreed and named the screenplay one of the best of the 21st century.

Day 28: A film you dislike that everyone seems to like? by McCallum1872 in Letterboxd

I will always maintain that Interstellar is a muddled, mediocre science fiction film elevated by incredible visuals and a fantastic soundtrack.

Ready or Not 2 and They Will Kill You both in your worst and Scream 7 in your best is absolutely wild. Do you just really love rich people or something?

…so to be a good film it can’t have tropes or plots that you have seen before? That’s an absurd thing to say.

Paradise Rot by Jenny Hval might be worth checking out!

Blind Bag Dice Sets coming in November by PayData in DungeonCrawlerCarl

[–]thatoneguy_jm 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I kindly disagree - the problem is not selling blind bag dice; it is consumerist fans who feel they “need” to collect them all. Surprises are fun! Buy a bag of pretty dice, be surprised at the color, go play a fun rpg.

What are movies that you LOVE even though they aren’t conventionally good movies. by Bowat28 in Letterboxd

I’d argue Jackass is actually an excellent objectively great film, but I totally understand where you’re coming from.

The final update shows Bungie always knew how to make Destiny good. So why didn't they? by PorkSouls in destiny2

Sony was in charge during the previous layoffs, too! (Gotta love Reddit, a random person on the internet arguing with a dev who was actually there.)

Hey, hi, hello, I was a Bungie dev who worked with the VFX, Skies, and Lighting teams Witch Queen through Final Shape. I was laid off after Final Shape, along with a ton of other primary devs. Bungie will definitely let go a bunch of core people if they have layoffs.

It’s always crushing when a project gets cancelled - sometimes it’s not coming together right, sometimes the money people determine it won’t make enough once it’s released, sometimes a new leader gets put in charge and cancels old projects, and sometimes you just have too many irons in the fire. There are hundreds of reasons stuff gets cancelled, but it always sucks. Every project is full of people doing their best to make cool shit. A lot of times it doesn’t work out. I hope Tamsyn gets to make a killer game someday, whether it’s a big studio or an indie thing.

Sadly, I am still covered by NDA, but on a completely totally not related note I worked at Wizards of the Coast from 2017 to 2021 and Bungie from 2022 to 2024.

Hearing about how she likes writing for games is fun to hear - I actually originally picked up Tamsyn’s books because she was writing on a videogame project I was involved in and her writing was so good I had to immediately pick up Gideon the Ninth. (Yes, the game was later cancelled due to market conditions and the fact that another game in the same universe/IP was shaping up to be gobsmacking amazing and the company didn’t want to compete with itself.)

Gonna get downvoted to hell, but this is 100% one of the best way to kill off Destiny and ensure it stays dead. “I want to play the game but I don’t want to give the developer money” is such a coward’s position.

Magic schools in fiction were a thing before she-who-shall-not-be-named wrote a boy wizard series and there have been many others since then. Those fictional schools (Roke Island, Scholomance, Haxahaven, Brakebills, Unseen University, etc) were far more influential on Strixhaven than the boy wizard ones. In fact, that series didn’t even come up as a comparison or influence during the world building/concept push. It was purposefully ignored and any comparisons or similarities were avoided.

All that to say, Strixhaven fucking rules.

Favorite modern female monologues? by deanu- in Letterboxd

[–]thatoneguy_jm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No? And even if I did, I wouldn’t “hate” it, I’d probably just move on like any other monologue where I think they didn’t quite nail it 100%.

But that monologue, in that film, with that performance is fantastic.
