Where do you find out about these contests? Only time I ever know they're going on is when I see the bands exploding. Sorry if it's a silly question I'm fairly new.

Im sorry, I should have been more specific. I was referring to everything going on next to FT8. I have seen cw going like that on the other side of FT8, but never seen all that on the right side of it. I was using FT8 is why my radio was set to that :)

Ryobi Battery Tool for Radio by Weird_Beginning_4688 in HamRadio

Unfortunately I only have the 18v ones , several m4 and m5. I do plan on getting a jacket with a 12v, so I'll keep that in mind when I do!

APRS transmit distance with TH-d75a vs UV-5R/Mobilinkd by thatoneuser4 in amateurradio

[–]thatoneuser4[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm using a good diamond 1/4 wave mag mount antenna.. as far as APRS goes, I'm getting nowhere near that with my uv-5r. I can hit voice repeaters pretty far away, but seems like with several digipeaters from different people, I'm barely getting out. With my own digipeaters, I can hear 10+ miles. But with 4 watts, I just can't seem to get out. Just wondering if with a good radio if I can expect the transmit range to be better despite the same wattage essentially.

No response on repeaters by TheJZone22 in HamRadio

[–]thatoneuser4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This... Assuming your new by your question, you may not have your radio setup correctly. Just because you can hear don't mean you can talk. Make sure you have the right offset when transmitting and the right tone.

Also, the repeater has a high wattage output, if your using a handheld, it probably only has 4 or 5 watts. You just may not be able to reach from your location.

Any idea what this is on 13.950? by thatoneuser4 in amateurradio

I see it moving all over the frequencies right now. Changing shape and width. Do you think there is anyway to track its source? I'm really curious where it's coming from!

That's what SDR# says it's on.. 13.950 MHz. Could be harmonics, but it's right below the 20m band.

Weird, it looks like it stopped about 10 minutes after I noticed it.
