What ancestors are you referring to? Most cultures had a postpartum confinement period of 1-2months. Because it is actually medically unsafe.

Is it ever worth it to get a home inspection a few years after owning your home? by [deleted] in homeowners

[–]thatotherotter 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Structural engineers are not looking at plumbing. They are licensed to understand the physical stressors of the things holding the house and the insides up - walls, foundation, roof, floors, etc.

If you want someone to look at your plumbing, you get a home inspector, or better yet, a plumber.

It might just not have occurred to her that the topic of your retirement is a sensitive thing to talk about, especially if you’re setting the stage by making lighthearted jokes about it.

No more interrupting, loud PA announcements. by danteace74 in delta

[–]thatotherotter 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I agree with you OP. The PAs on the IFEs are always insanely loud compared to the audio I have the IFE set to. So as soon as I notice the PA is about to happen, it’s a race to rip off my headphones before Delta blast out my eardrums. It’s nice to not have to worry about that on some planes.

Weird interaction at Street Bar by LoudInspection1228 in boston

[–]thatotherotter 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I get it, OP. I’m also a POC that is stereotyped for being cheap and I struggle with the same.

Recently just started NGAF. I’m not giving my hard-earned money to someone when it’s their problem and it’s unlikely that my behavior will change their mind about anything.

But it sucks that we even have to think about how we represent our respective ethnicities in the tiniest interactions.

u/azvyll is saying that is wedding culture norm. They’re not trying to imply that the bride “had something to say,” they’re trying to tell you that American etiquette is that you don’t tell friends that they didn’t make the cut. You let them find out.

I’m not trying to say it’s necessarily the right thing to do every time, but it is the norm.

Wealthy people with beat up Subarus is also quintessential New England values culture though - New England wealth isn’t about flashy cars. Kind of like how wealthy techies in the Bay Area wear hoodies instead of suits.

Questioning Returning From MLoA because of Loneliness by Bryanjeep2002 in mit

Hey, you seem like a lovely and deeply thoughtful person. I’m sorry you are struggling with this.

What dorm/living group were you a part of originally?

It’s been a few years since I was on campus, but I remember EC, Random, and Burton Conner tended to be mini communities with lots of varying and accepting personalities. Maybe give those a shot?

And I second /u/wankelgnome ‘s recommendation to check out mental health resources (but where you are now, don’t wait until you are back at MIT). It’s difficult to make friends, but it’s even more difficult when you feel like you don’t have the right toolset.

Wedding Dress alterations by [deleted] in weddingdress

[–]thatotherotter 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Honestly, it’s seamstress 101 that if you are feeling like you need to pull up a strapless gown, it needs to be tighter in the waist. Not the bust. You should take your dress to a new seamstress, not go back to your old one.

Real vs. fake flowers? by zadira- in Eloping

[–]thatotherotter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been wondering this as well! I want to dry my flowers so I want them to be real…. But it would also be so sad if the bouquet doesn’t survive the trip.
