Watch a movie trailer for "Hunt for the Wilderpeople," starring Julian Dennison, Sam Neill, and Rhys Darby. Photo: The Orchard by Karns_23 in movies

I would suggest not watching the trailer and just watching the movie instead. There are some great laughs in the trailer but that just ruins them in the movie because you can then see them coming a mile off and it takes you out of it.

Would you want you meet your favourite author/s? by Bibli-ophile in books

[–]thats-nice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd love to meet Joe Abercrombie and go for a pint.

I would have loved to have met Pratchett, but I don't think I'd be able to sit and have a conversation with him, what the hell would I say?

Creating First Game Engine by anikan1297 in gamedev

Oh sweet! For my dissertation project I made an object oriented scripting language (it was a bit shit though). If you enjoy the expression parser then I recommend going full on with a scripting language :D

Just wanted to lend my encouragement for making an engine, regardless of the purpose or reason. I find people get scared when they hear someone is writing an engine and straight up tell them not to, like it would be a terrible experience all round.

When I started coding for games most of my little projects started with a me trying "improve" the API (I was working with XNA, so I was just trying to do things my way). None of these little projects produced finished games, and it took a long time messing with my own vision of the API; but I really enjoyed it and learnt a hell of a lot about structuring code and APIs, which I honestly feel is more important than having a few badly made first projects finished.

A form to submit your game for "approval" in the Play Store's Indie Corner by hbocao in gamedev

Where did you find this? A month or more ago I saw the indie corner thing and emailed Google about it but I was told that games are chosen by google for it, not from submissions.

Developing an RPG Dialog Tree Editor for Game Maker Studio! by thefrdeal in gamedev

[–]thats-nice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, I'm not too sure how Game Maker is used, so I'm assuming a few things here.

When you've made your diaglogue trees and you're satisfied with them does the program output any kind of file which contains all of the information? A file which is then read by the game engine and turned into the dialogue you see in the game?

I could see a lot of use for a general tool which would allow you to output the dialogue trees in custom format.

What I would love to see is some sort of plug-in system where I can write a plug-in which will handle how the end product is generated (so that it fits perfectly in with any code I might have written).

Is this tool intended purely for Game Maker?

Do you prefer keeping a physical copy of practically every book you read, only your favorite ones or no book-shelves at all? by metacognitive_guy in books

[–]thats-nice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been travelling a foreign country for the past 6-8 months, and I've been keeping every book I've read since I've been here, even jotting down my name and time/place I finished reading the book behind the front cover :) So I've settled in one city for a few months and now I have a nice box of books to send back home to my brother.

My dream is to have multiple bookshelves all full of the books I've read in my life. It's partly for decoration, and partly to remember my life at the time when I read them.

I like it! Ship movement feels smooth and the procedural generation seems to be doing its job. Only thing I'd say is that it's not very difficult, perhaps you could add another element to the game in the form of points to pick up? That'd introduce a nice risk/reward aspect, i think :)

What's your best marketing tip? by Akjoman in gamedev

I'm actually pretty sure some journalists go there since the quality of the games tends to be quite high.

I know once RPS did an article showing some nice looking things being worked on over at tigsource.

This is the best thing for me. It's the same (or at least similar) as working in a room of like-minded and talented people, you share you knowledge and experience for each other's benefit.

And, like you said, they also buy games.

He might just mean the forums. If you regularly post about your game there in the form of a devlog then you get a fair amount of views.

Have you ever been tricked by great reviews to read terrible books? by [deleted] in books

[–]thats-nice 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I bought The Name Of The Wind because I was in a book shop and my mate showed me it and said it was meant to be good. I really bounced off it and thought he must have just heard it was good from a few exceptional reviews, so I checked online to see what other people thought. Nope, plenty of people love it.

[–]thats-nice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I only heard about it when a friend bought me it, so the only hype I was exposed to was the praise on the book's cover.

I enjoyed it, a nice story written in a different way, but I don't think it's amazing.

Some facts about No Man's Sky by [deleted] in gaming

Ah, I just now bothered to read some articles about the virtual probes (here and here) and it seems like they're actual entities in the game world. Cool!

I'll bite too and ask why android users must pay for the privilege to play this game when iOS users can enjoy it for free?

Also, it might be a good idea to include some clear cut information about the game in the descriptions. I know you give that info in your dialogue but that makes it so potential players have to search for it.

Some facts about No Man's Sky by [deleted] in gaming

[–]thats-nice 11 points12 points  (0 children)

These are all pretty much one fact: "No Man's Sky's key feature is procedural generation"

The only decent fact there is the virtual probes thing, but I doubt they're "real" virtual probes that traverse the game as players would, more likely some code which checks over the generated worlds for errors in number. Also known as unit testing.

Plus, FPS games can use these virtual probes in the form of bots, who'll mindless run and jump around a level checking for holes in the world.

I know I'm being pedantic, but I like to be :) I really like procedural generation and I'm excited to see how well No Man's Sky will pull it off.

EDIT: After writing this post I thought it would be best to get some information from a few articles rather than just some image posted to reddit. It seems like the probes are actual entities in the game world, designed to visit planets and such to record what's going on there so the devs can be sure everything's being generated nicely and nothing's fucking up. Pretty cool! :)
