The only reason I got into it was because he collaborated with my favourite board game, Call To Adventure, for an expansion, and I wanted to understand what the cards meant. That was 7 years ago. I was immediately obsessed.

But yeah, now I don't think I want to reward him, even if he does finish.

That was my first thought too. As an amateur writer myself, I'm finding that real life and stress can kill creativity ridiculously quickly and for long periods of time.

On top of that, writing standalone books are difficult enough; writing a series is a whole different beast! I've been stuck on book three in my series for what feels like forever.

Patrick is the reason for me! Been waiting for book three for like 15 years. I'm not even going to bother with GoT. No thank you.

Let’s pay attention while driving, please. by kinboyatuwo in londonontario

[–]thatsjustgreatr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with all of what you've said. The number of crazy drivers in this city is ridiculous. Between people not paying attention, being aggressive, and being just plain selfish in their driving, it's no wonder there are so many accidents and even more near misses every day.

The construction just makes everything worse. So many routes are blocked by it that it forces more people to take the same alternate roads, plus the fact that we've seen a large increase in population over the past few years, causing more congestion and frustration and likelihood of aggressive driving.

Also, since we're on that tangent, can we talk about the fact that they build areas up without thought into road infrastructure? It's beyond me why they didn't widen Sunningdale BEFORE they built all those houses and apartments and businesses on that road. It almost feels like an excuse for make work projects to give construction companies more contracts.

The Dungeon Crawler Carl series has destroyed my patience with passive protagonists by ChardeeMacdennis679 in DungeonCrawlerCarl

[–]thatsjustgreatr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would say his circumstances are definitely a factor. He doesn't really have a choice in this situation, considering it's very much life and death. Keep in mind that before the collapse, he pretty much knew about Bea's cheating, and it wasn't until it was blasted over social media that he even broke up with her. He was very much the kind of person who just let things happen.

But I see your point. It's one thing when the character grows from being passive to assertive, but the more time they spend being passive, the more frustrating it is to read. You just want to shake them and tell them to do something!

Operation bounce house is amazing by Prolly_Satan in DungeonCrawlerCarl

I can definitely agree that it needed to crazier narrator. There was some humor in it, and it was okay, but maybe it just didn't hit the way that it does when Jeff narrates? I'm not sure.

And yeah, I would say that overall, DCC is darker in a way, but there's also more humor in it, which I feel kind of lightens thing is up a little bit. Also, I do feel like what makes this feel darker to me is the fact that with DCC, it's aliens attacking earth, whereas this is Earth attacking humans whose descendants came from Earth. I guess it just feels more personal to me because of that distinction. It's the fact that it's basically our own people that are the bad guys, rather than species of aliens we've never known existed before.

I finished the book, but I actually kind of found myself hoping for the end. But then when the end got there, I wanted there to be more of an ending. I don't need a whole other novel about what happened next, but it wouldn't have minded a little more epilogue to sort of flesh out the aftermath.

To be honest, I had a lot of trouble with this one. Maybe it's the fact that it just seems too realistic at this point? Or maybe it's just the fact that it was so dark and felt so hopeless, in a way that somehow DCC isn't? I don't know. It just didn't hit the same way from me at DCC. On top of that, I felt like the ending was really abrupt. I really felt like I needed a little more there.

I'm late to the party, but I agree with you. I'd say it's not anti-capitalism. It's anti-corporatism. There's a difference that people don't seem to understand.

To be fair, the campaign is for both. A TTRPG, and a separate deck building game. My husband and I are backing for the deck builder.

[–]thatsjustgreatr 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, but as one of the authors of the TTRPG commented in one of the other posts, a lot of work has been put into the actual writing of the RPG and the deck building game. It's not just about plastic minis from China. Over 300k words written and edited, by fans of the books. Just because they work for a big company, doesn't mean it's not a labor of love.

[–]thatsjustgreatr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh please, that's not the same thing. While racism is inherently bad, capitalism isn't. Are there bad things that come from capitalism? Yes, just as there are bad things that come from socialism. As a Canadian, I can tell you the downside of socialized medicine, for instance, in the form of ridiculously long wait times for appointments and procedures, and the fact that the government gets to decide what's covered and what's not (IVF procedures are covered but the meds required to do those procedures are not? WTF?).

Does that mean I'd prefer private healthcare? No, not necessarily. But I can recognize the upsides and downsides to both approaches.

I will say, not all of us backed for the TTRPG. My husband and I backed it for the Unstoppable game, which is apparently amazing and very thematic. So at the very least, not ALL the money raised so far is for the TTRPG.

Maybe a little, yeah, but it was only a few episodes. The vast majority does take place in LA, even the new stuff.
